Does he EVER look forward for a more incisive pass?

Always seems to want to play the easy pass and it happens far too frequently for an area of the pitch you want that creativity and killer instinct.

Suppose I'm the only critic here though as many seem to just praise his overall work ethic and ability to break up play.

It's not his strongest point - he has the ability I think, but just likes to pass off the responsibility to the more talented players it seems.

He really should have done more from some of the positions he got himself into.

Did you see sterling's goal last week?

EVER? What, like the pass he made over some 30 odd yards last week, to split a defense with his weaker foot?

Shouldn't Joe Allen be bearing the brunt of this kind of criticism?

Dunno if this has been mentioned, but did you see last week's game?

He did last week, of course.

I'm talking about the overall play. You want your CM to be utilising all the space and passing infield to the player forward to make an attack more dangerous.

He does always seem to play the easy pass and 'keep things ticking' without really causing too much damage to the opposition.

You look at someone like Fabregas who plays that position and he bosses it. He swivels on the ball, looks at the man he thinks he can constantly play 1-2's with, plays the simpler pass when he needs to but its just that killer instinct you want your CM to have that I don't think he will EVER have.

i think he's improved a hell of a lot no doubt but he will never be the penetrative midfielder the opposition fear.

Joe Allen has actually improved the last 2 games i've seen him.

Overall though, this is the position we need to strengthen MASSIVELY imo.

See I don't.

I've seen enough of him to see that he's a player who has amazing stamina and pushes himself which is great BUT he won't ever

1 - Have the goalscoring part of his game on lock.
2 - Have the ability to consistently make an attack penetrative.

Fabregas is THAT type of player we need.

Henderson had two chances to create a goal scoring opportunity today, but he took an extra touch which lost the chance, one from the cute free kick and I cant remember where the other was from. Theyre the only real criticisms id have of him tonight.

I thought that free kick routine was really good; too bad he didn't get that final part sorted out. There was one chance in the box when I think he turned the wrong way and allowed the defender to get to the ball first. Not sure if that was the opportunity from the free kick or the other one you mentioned.

Hendo is good, but he shouldn't be playing that far up the pitch. Doesn't have the tempo

The problem is that there are very few midfielders around that meet your requirements. Henderson has shown that he's got that sort of thing in his locker but does he take it to a Gerrard in his prime type level? Nope. He's not that good.

But then, who is?

Fabregas is a world class player despite whatever happened at Barcelona. There aren't that many that are comparable.

In any case, we rely more on Coutinho to perform that sort of role for us and when Lallana comes back we'll have another.

The final third is somewhere Henderson for me just doesn't have the intelligence nor ability to make it happen.

You keep him in that central area and ask him to ping the ball around sideways and win the ball back he's great.

It seems all quite simplistic but you want a player in his position to have the energy and determination no doubt, but you also want somebody who has that extra creative spark to really cut through defences. Allen/Henderson won't be able to do this.

I would love us to go in for someone in the modric/fabregas mould or even try breed coutinho into that position.

Think someone like Coutinho has the brain and ability to do it but would need to be crazy disciplined and consistent.

Lallana please. He'll tear shit up for us.

Very valid point.

That position is SO difficult to fill.

Like you said though, and I already made a thread on Coutinho playing that position which against the smaller teams could work a treat.

Henderson will be able to make forward passes if people are moving in front of him. A few times tonight our midfield had to hold it up to allow players get into a position to receive the pass.

There was a lack of movement at times, but there were also positions Sterling/Coutinho took up further forward where I was shouting at him to play the pass but instead it went backwards.

It's very subtle but if you watch it carefully you'll see how many passes forward can actually be made but don't end up there.

Genius.

Henderson will always get a pass because he was the original distance covering hard working CM.

Allen is almost the same player, but he's considered shit by a lot of the same people who rate Henderson. I'd say Allen is better in attacking areas.

For whatever reason though, people only remember the highlights of Hendo and the lowlights of Allen.

I don't particularly care which of the two we start, but whomever it is needs to start seriously contributing to the attack consistently. Hendo's assists started to pick up late last season, so hopefully he can do more than just backheels around the box.
