" GlenJo is the best right-back in the league at this stage...."

It's not because he's 'attacking so much that he's caught out of position', he simply has moments where he completely switches off and isn't fully focused and that costs us. I believe he was defensively better at LB because he had to constantly think throughout the match. He needs to improve his concentration.

Good player though. Automatic starter? Not for me. It depends on the opposition and who we're facing.

He was one of Liverpool's best players today against Villa. He's better than Martin Kelly, and I'm thinking that right now he's an integral part of the best back four in the league.
Much love for Johnson here.
I like him, as a player, he's great when we play like a good possession side, when we don't and we play one of those games where we're slightly under the cosh and can't keep hold of the ball, he's a liability at times.

So our problem is conceding?

Not the fact we're not scoring enough?

The table says otherwise.
Come on Jon, that's a pretty blind way of looking at it. You always look to improve and look at where you're falling short, yeah we need to score more, we also need to be as defensively sound as possible. If he'd closed down better at Craven Cottage we'd have got a point. Reina might have fucked up, but he'll save us more times than Johnson will over the course of a season and probably cost us less points too. As a team we're starting to hunt in packs and keep the ball better, like we did at the end of last season, that's where he shines. When asked to defend as a team for prolonged period, he's usually the one you'd put money on to crumble first.

Now he's regaining his fitness, he's continuing last seasons excellent form.

An excellent player much underrated on here.

Magic has been great since his return from injury. Defensively he has definately improved and worked well with Downing today.

He knows that Kelly is waiting in the wings so he has to up his game. Long may it continue.

Well, this I did not expect.

Huzzah !

We've done this before, I'll just say I'm not surprised Johnson looked good when he had no defending to do.
QFT

Kelly for me defensively, better crosser too.
If he was anyway decent at defending we wouldn't have conceded as many as we have and we wouldn't have been beaten by Fulham.
Not exonerating Glen but Reina fluffed the shout and handed it to Clint.

Kelly's future is in central I believe.

He'll not get many games as long as Johnson maintain his form and rightly so.

Kelly is a wonderful player and one I rate immensely but he's not at Johnson's level and probably never quite will be at RB. You have to consider than when Johnson is playing like he is now the teams beeing linked are the likes of Real etc.

Kelly will perhaps go on to be just as good - or even better - but I reckon it'll be as a CB more than anything else.

Yep. Kelly's career path will follow Carra's methinks. Hopefully with a few more league titles though 😉

Yes, please.

I don't give a shit. I wouldn't have him right back for us. Liability on toast.

each to their own, I think he's well worth his place and it should be noted his introduction to the team (along with agger) coincided with us conceeding less goals. right, that's despite johnson.

He is. Not by miles. But he is.

Whether you think so or not too. Richards is the one coming close.

I think walker isn't that far off myself. He's young, has decent positional sense and is quick as lightning

Richards
Johnson
Walker

Pretty shit for right backs this league aren't we?

Kelly showed he can equally be a liability with that suicide pass back last night. Johnson on top form is our best right full. Kelly may be on his way to stardom, but he's not there yet!

Kelly makes one mistake and suddenly he's not there yet? All players make mistakes. Gerrard for one made a much worse pass, with less pressure on him, at a stage when he was way more experienced than Kelly is now.

Are we talking about the same Glen Johnson everyone said was a massive liability 2 months ago?

At least have some fucking consistency.

This thread's a joke.

I've been pretty consistent with my opinion of johnson but even if I wasn't I could down his erratic performances down to coming back from a lengthy hamstring injury

I didnt mean it to come across like I was using that one mistake to make that assumption. Fair enough Glenjo will make his fair share of defensive mistakes but he's still the best right back at the club and he's englands right back too. And as far as ''suddenly he's not there yet", Im sorry but I dont think Kelly is, and its not based on last nights mistake. Its because he's young and has lots to learn. That also doesnt mean Im writing him off...he's got a massive career with us and looks like a future captain, who can hopefully win lots of silverware. But right now is right now. 🙂

I still think hes a liability still, but his performances of late have been good

still think he's not worth 17m

He's capable of being a 25M+ player though.

That moment against Chelsea came from a special player. You just have to see how he controlled it throughout to know he's gifted. And that's why I always wanted him when he was at Portsmouth the summer before we came back with a massive bid. It was clear he had a great amount of talent.

As for his time in Liverpool, I've been slightly underwhelmed, but not too much. I had very high hopes for him though and I hope he can someday surpass them.

he's a quality player, but £17.5m was a bit of a comedy price when you consider what the likes of enrique, arbeloa and finnan cost. still, he's never deserved to be lumped in with aquilani and keane as evidence of rafa's premature dementia, as some people have tried to do, and i still think he'd be worth a shot playing further forward if the need arises.

That is shite

Grade A shite.

Unless you're bemoaning the inflation rate of transfer fees, then I completely agree

Yeah I have to say I'm not a massive fan of GlenJo. He's ok but £17mill ok? Nope. If that's the case I wonder how much Kelly is worth? I think that GJ is better but only fractionally so.

I've consistently said that we've got a great player in Johnson. Don't know what you are talking about.

Glenjo is better but, as many has said before, Kellys main position is cb. That said I think he could be a superb rb if that is where we'll stick him. He'll be an England regular.
