Ok, which players were 'not very good' at first and turned out to be great later?

Robert Pires

He's had a terrible season. The abuse he receives although unfair, because it should be towards our manager for finding ourselves in this position.

Still, I doubt Insua reads any of it, so who gives a fuck?
[/quote]

If you look from the player's perspective, it's anything but terrible. This is the first season in his career when he established himself as a starting 11 player in the Premiership. Yes, he is one of the weakest links in the team, and opposing teams often specifically target him, but he still managed to maintain a decent enough level of performance to hang in there and not force his manager to look for desperate options (Masherano or one of the CBs at LB). If you can do something like that at 20, you are doing something right and you deserve all the credit in the world. I bet none of the people spewing abuse and hatred at the lad had accomplished anything comparable when they were 20. If they did, they would know better and they would know how much hard work and dedication it takes, especially if you are not blessed with amazing God-given talent or overpowering physique.

Sorry for getting a bit emotional here, but can't we just support the lad? I don't suggest turning a blind eye to his screw-ups and limitations, but why can't we, Liverpool supporters, get behind or at least STOP THE ABUSE of one of our own players who has shown nothing but exemplary attitude in all of his time in the club? I hate to sound like a moralizing old lady here, but Brendan and his clique really should be ashamed of themselves for creating this atmosphere of hatred towards one of our players. Good job, lads, you've really covered yourself in glory. I hope people around you will be more supportive of your efforts to succeed in life than you are towards others.

That's a rather odd post.

He's not doing very well for this club and has cost us points and will continue to do so. The only reason he's getting games is because of the almighty fuck up in replacing Riise and Aurelio being the Wicker Man.

I'm not going to bow down to his feet or be in awe of him because he's managed to get in the first team for Liverpool. If that were the case we'd all still have shrines of Igor Biscan in our lofts. Footballers just don't get compare to the common man, because what would be the point? They get compared to other professionals and rightfully so.

Henry

Henry was so 'not very good' that he scored 18 goals in his first season

Examples like Henry and Pires aren't really helping any case you might try to make regarding Insua, because he isn't anywhere near good enough, and never will be

How do you know how good someone will ever be? Given that you are so sure of players and their potential why don't you get a job in football as a scout?

Brendan is correct re Henry, and besides I've already mentioned Pires and Henry. And if the best we can do on this excercise is point out 2 legends from 25+ years ago I think the point is fairly proven.

I added the last one in for your benefit.

There are also loads of players who've taken an eternity to come good at their club after a move. Cf Cole, Park, Crouch, Evra, Bendtner, etc etc

I don't really think Cole, Crouch, Neville, Park et al are really that good, they're *all right* (some more than others)

FYI, I meant Andy Cole, just in case.

They're all good players Bren. Maybe not World Class in some respects, but if you play for a Top 4 club for a sustained period of time, then you're obviously pretty fucking decent.

But if the teams drops out of the top four the when you're a first team player what does that say ?

Too many ordinary or rubbish players?

Let's face it, no team in the Top 8 have players as poor as Lucas or Insua in the first XI

Lucas played 40 games last season, and we finished 2nd.

We might have won the bloody thing if he'd played less...

He started less than a third of our league games last season, and 10 of his league appearances were less than 20 mins long. he came on 8 or 9 times after the 80th minute.

This season has been a lot different.

Well at least you tried. What's interesting is a majority of the players you mentioned in this and the other post are ex-
scum.

First few games. Think he got something like 15 goals in his first season.

Ok...but I still think that he will never be good enough for us. He has no balance (he falls over all the time, no pace and he reads the game very poorly. Hope I´m wrong though.

So basically, in a nutshell.....Ferguson has a brilliant ability to get the best out of fuckin average players.
