Talksh!te had a male model called David Gandy (Tottenham fan - o wot a surprise) in the studio yesterday. They got him ranking Premiership managers in terms of how stylish they looked and he put Stevie G next to last - said he dresses like a stand-in geography teacher. 😀

He’s typically overrated and English, I realise he has the decent stats this season though.
Plays almost every game for England and does next to nothing.

They finished 11th last year. they were in and around 11th when he took over... not sure I agree. He'll have to kick on next season quickly.

Hard/unfair to make direct comparisons like that imo.

"Gerrard takes over a Villa side who sit 16th the Premier League table, two points above the relegation zone, and are without a win since September." (5 pts away from 11th)

Last season, the point difference between 11th and 12th was 10 pts, whereas currently 4 pts separate 9th to 14th place. Last season's 55 pts would mean a top 8 finish this season.

Then there are other factors like
  • games played without fans (last season)
  • no pre-season (for Gerrard to work with the players)
  • losing their best player in Grealish
  • missing Traore cos of injury (7 goals, 7 assists in 36 league apps last season)
  • new signings like Buendia, Ings and Bailey to bed in
  • bringing through Ramsey (who has played more than 3 times last season's mins in the league)
No doubt there will be pressure on him to deliver though, given the money he has spent/will be spending. Interesting to see who he brings in (been linked with a few DMs already).

Gerrard's assistant Michael Beale is about to leave for QPR and some Villa fans threw up Xabi Alonso's name

Wow, this looks like a coup. He gave up managerial job at Blackpool to be Gerrard's no. 2

[article]Aston Villa is pleased to announce the appointment of Neil Critchley as Assistant Head Coach.

Critchley leaves his post as manager of Championship club Blackpool with immediate effect to become part of Steven Gerrard’s coaching staff.

The 43-year-old led Blackpool to promotion from League One during his first full season at the helm via the play-offs and managed them successfully to a mid-table position last term.

Critchley joined the Liverpool Academy in 2013, coaching the Under-18s and Under-23s, and took charge of the senior Liverpool side twice during the 2019/20 season. One of those occasions was against Villa for a Carabao Cup tie with the Reds’ first team away at the Club World Cup.[/article]
