I'll be good

Take any 9 year period that Ferguson has been manager of United and compare it with the 9 years Bob Paisley had in charge of LFC and it becomes evident that Sir Bob remains the greatest and most successful ever manger of a British club.

Bob Paisley 3 European Cups in 9 years versus Ferguson 2 European Cups in 25.

Add to that the fact that it was harder to win the European Cup in Bob's day as; you had to be League Champions to even qualify, there was no seeding (e.g. we got drawn against Nottm Forest in the first round when we were holders and they were league Champions) and it was a straight knock out so if you had one bad game (e.g. Tblisi* 3-0 Liverpool) you were pretty much out.....unlike the group stages nowadays in which you can have 2 or 3 bad days and still qualify comfortably.

* It might have been Kiev, but we got humped 3-0 by one of the Dynamos in the early 80's on a frozen pitch in sub zero temperatures and subsequently went out.

You have to hand it to the guy. Thirteen league titles, two European Cups, he has been a brilliant manager for the Mancs.
I know I am going to get hammered for saying this but in my opinion, pound for pound, he is the greatest manger, English football has seen, if not world football.
I know he has his critics but if he had been our manager for the last twenty years we all would love him now.
I have to admit to an amount of jealousy of the Mancs and can't help myself coveting their manager.
Respect to Sir Alex.

It was Tiblisi.

Cheers Spion, I thought it was but wasn't 100% sure and couldn't be arsed checking.
IIRC it was Chivadze who was our main tormentor. I listened to it on my transistor radio in bed on Radio 2, Peter Jones et al.

I cried afterwards.

al was one of my favourite players back then too, but he's the one who was supposed to be marking Chivadze from that corner.

I remember listening to the St Eteinne game walking round the garden, radio on my shoulder, trying to keep in the best position to stop the BBC reception from fading.

Haha, me too (different bed obv) and it was only second half commentary. I remember the defeats so vivdly because they were so rare' Ferencveros, Red Star Belgrade, Forest and the longest ever 90 minutes......the 2-0 defeat by Moenchengladbach in the UEFA cup final which we won 3-2 on aggregate.............how we held out under that pressure in the second half I'll never know but by full time my 10 year old nerves were shattered.

I was in Germany for most of that year, on a year out before going to university to study German and French. I didn't have access to a TV but I did follow the game on UK radio (sport was on Radio 2 in those days and I could get that where I was living). Sounded like we took absolutely no prisoners that night, but the following morning there was no moaning from the German press and fans, just praise for our toughness and professionalism and a recognition that the Gladbachers would have played it the exact same way if the position had been reversed.

I don't know why people can't just look past the fact that he's the mancs boss and simply appreciate him for what he is..........The greatest manager of all time.

No mate, i just think you've got to give credit where it's due. Many might not like the man, but as a manager Sir Alex has no peers.

I concur with Rafa4. Fair do's he has made a silk purse out of something of a cows ear this year, how many United players would you really want at Liverpool if you had the choice RVP and that's about it, but they have pissed the league, it's all down to that old bastard.

I think it's clear that Fergie is a superior manager to Paisley. Paisley took over a good young squad of players from Shankly, kept it going admirably and had a remarkable record of success. But Sir Alex, quite apart from what he did at Aberdeen, took over a club who hadn't won the league in nearly 20 years and (sure, with a lot of money) transformed it into the dominant force in English football for over two *decades*. It's an amazing achievement, just phenomenal, and he did it all while playing attractive attacking football. We should put rivalry aside and appreciate him while he's around, because we're witnessing true greatness here.

Hate to disagree old chum but:

De Gea
Evra
Vidic
Jones
Carrick
Valencia
Kagawa
Rooney
RVP
Hernandez
