I’m looking forward to seeing this guy..I reckon he’s gonna be good

‘Fabio Carvalho has signed for Liverpool under some muted fanfare but with the belief that he will challenge for a starting role with the Reds.
According to Theo Squires from the Liverpool Echo though: “He’ll (Carvalho) get the domestic cup games for sure, essentially replacing Origi and Minamino if he goes too.
“Five subs across the board this season so should get a few league and European appearances too. It’s a good starting point with how well he does deciding how much more he gets.”

This may be somewhat of a surprise to the player and some supporters, with many having big hopes for the former Fulham man next season.
The 19-year-old has a long future ahead of him but if Jurgen Klopp didn’t see a place for him in the squad, there would be little reason to not allow a loan spell with the London club in the upcoming campaign.

It’s just one person’s opinion but it does feel like the Portuguese attacker will be handed slightly more chances than has been hinted at here.

Sorry for my ignorance but will he be the attcking midfielder some have been looking for, or a front 3 player?

From the little i know of him he seems a little coutinho-esque, and possibly fits between roles in our current system...

Every one of his games for Fulham was as AM / LM

How Fulham Under Marco Silva Have Become Unstoppable in the Championship | SIlva Tactical Analysis - YouTube

This is how Fulham have used Carvalho in their set up. You can see similarity to our style, or maybe a style we're moving to this season with Nunez leading the attack. Worth a watch.

The No 10 in a 4-2-3-1,or the 9 in 4-3-3 look most likely.
With a Coutinho build he's never going to be a #9 (Mitrovic played 44 games scoring 43 goals as Fulham's #9) - even a Firmino type #9, and #10 is defunct position nowadays.

I've posted all the stats and analysis on him before in a debate (in the Carvaho thread) as to whether he's a forward or a midfielder. The analysis I posted showed that Fulham (contrary to popular belief) generally play a 4-3-3 not as most people suppose a 4-2-3-1. This is borne out by the 5 forwards on Fulham's books (not Carvalho who they listed as a midfielder) having played by far the most games across the front three (LW, CF, RW).

Therefore Carvalho has been the AM in a midfield three, the other two being more defensive. The stats are unequivocal :
Whoscored : 32 games at AMC and 1 at CM, 3 subs.
Transfermarkt show him as an Attacking Midfielder but also CM and LM (match breakdown 28xAM 9xCM and 1xLW) Both show his average position (in a very attack minded Fulham side dominating possession) as very firmly in the centre circle.

None of this however dictates what Klopp is likely to do with him ! That said I'd be very surprised if it is anything other than :

Diaz/Jota ................. Jota/Nunez .................. Salah

.................... Carvalho / Firmino / Keita

.............. Thiago / Keita

.................................. Fabs / Hendo

Though possibly (but unlikely) when Thiago isn't available:

Carvalho ................................................... Keita / Hendo

.................................. Fabs

Can't see him starting many games so likely to be restricted to FAC/LC and numerous Sub appearances now we have 5 subs.

He played AM for Fulham and so will obviously play that position for us. Just like Wijnaldum played AM or LW for Newcastle and so obviously played those positions for us ...
Not saying you're wrong, just the Klopp sometimes sees things that we don't and identifies a more appropriate position (within our system) for a player than where they have been used by previous employers.

I think Elliott is slated to play in that right wing role backing up Salah.
Problem is, he doesn't really have the pace Salah has.

what makes you think that? I thought Klopp had decided he was a midfielder

The most attacking midfielder in a 3 or the No.10 in a 4231. And he’ll be ‘take the league by storm’ brilliant in behind a rampant Darwin.

He's played there for a few games already.
With Carvalho coming in I kinda think that's where he's gonna get game time.

Well that's what I said 😉

Massive understatement there, he doesn't have Salahs pace, strength, dribbling ability or finishing
Yes I have to say I'm struggling to see him as a starter for us. Which position can he make 'his own'?

He's not a Thiago (and has never been used in that fashion) and if he's now competing with Carvalho to usurp Keita / Hendo then he's clearly not there (Keita being a far better presser/ball winner and Hendo isn't done yet, or for a couple more seasons). Clearly, although used sparingly as a Mo backup, he's not and never will be, that.

He's been played mostly at RM (although most feel he is a playmaking CM/AM), so unless he's just going to be 'an alternative option' to Hendo/Keita then what does he bring to the party? At present he looks more like a Hendo replacement, than he does an AM or RW, but without the defensive steeliness of Hendo (or indeed say Calvin Phillips who looks a great fit for us but will unfortunately end up at City).

It's difficult to envision him in a future MF with the likes of Fabs/Bellingham (pigs can fly)/Carvalho, A.N.Other.

There's no way Elliot will.be playing in the Salah role. However if we do change to a 4-2-3-1, I suppose he could play on the right of the 3.

I think for England he was playing wide, but not entirely sure if it was a 433 or 451. Did pretty well.

I think he could do a job as salahs backup; providing we don't expect him to play like salah. Same as Jota as backup for mane. Completely different style of wingplay

If he does play on the right of a 4-3-3 when Salah doesn't play, I'd imagine Diaz would take over the Salah role as the furthest forward. Or maybe that will become Darwin. Either way he won't be hovering around the shoulder of the defender for counter attacks.
I hope it doesn't happen though. His only shot at really making it at Liverpool is by becoming a good midfielder. Too big a stepdown on the wings compared to Diaz, Mane, Salah, and even Jota. Pace is the one thing they all have in common.

He's just a creative midfielder. Can play either of the 2 more advanced roles in the 433 or any of the 3 in a 4231. It's not a problem.

And he's brilliant. Intelligent, technically excellent, brave and always looking for the ball. You can tell he'll end up nice and stocky too so he'll be strong with a low centre of gravity, tough to knock off the ball.

He's going to be class.

Fingers tightly crossed that he ends up all that then !
