Right, it's probably been done to death all Summer but I thought it was worth saying...

While he's not your top tier Suarez-esque signing, when he has the ball there's a sense of "hold your breath in anticipation", you just know the lad will deliver some quality. He might look like a Librarian, be home by 9 and be better than a good book before bedtime, but I don't think I quite realised how efficiently good he is, almost Beckham like in impeccable efficiency, whether it's passing or crossing, it's with precision and nearly always looks like it comes off. I'm excited despite it kind of being a signing where we knew what we were getting, he's quality and he'll deliver, even if it's predictable, he's got the quality to give himself a yard and deliver time and time again.

Made up, so far.

I think he's going to play a huge role for us in the years to come. He is quality and he is consistent. Good attitude and yhe best we've had of his kind for some time. And he's in my fantasy league team.

Very good post Mark and I agree completly.

Think he'll be an excellent player for us. Couple of his crosses yesterday were amazing.

Fuck me there is feck all room on the Downing bandwagon any more.
It's not that long ago you had to look around too see if there was any one else aboard.
Fabio was on it if memory serves me right.

Still room for Ryan and Molbystwin to jump aboard but it is gaining such momentum it might be hard to catch it up..................

unless it grinds to a halt that is!

I certainly was count

He's exactly the sort of no frills, dynamic player we needed for the wing.

[/quote] Yeah yeah yeah, all well and good but we could have built a time machine, gone back to the 70's and brought back Pele in his prime if we'd only stumped up another twelfty billion, even if he didn't want to join us.

I will happily jump on the bandwagon if he plays out of his skin and proves me wrong, until then i wish we'd spent 20M on a better player.

One time he was asking a contestant what they did for a living, the contestant said "Actually, Jim, I'm unemployed just now" and the hapless Jim still said "Super smashing great". ;D

i'm sure i heard somewhere that 'super smashing great' is actually a misquotation of 'play it again, sam' proportions, and that he never actually said the three words together. it'll probably remain a mystery forever, though, given the gruelling nature of that particular research.

After watching Downing against Valencia, I think he'll blossom at Liverpool and make the step up.

Yeah, he was quite good.

I'm just so meh with him. I looked at that United-City game and saw Nani, Young, Silva, etc etc and just wanted one of them.

Was it too much to ask for somebody with a bit of flair and unpredictability?

Maybe I'm more fucked off with what I think will be our flat 4-4-2 playing in lines and squares football, cos United's second goal today is something I can't see us scoring all year long.

Maybe I'm being too negative.

Open goals everywhere.

Very new to the site so I don't know how the signing of downing was received on here but I do think he will be a quality addition to the squad. Glad to see we finally have a real winger with good pace and the ability to get a good cross in. The price tag obviously raised some eyebrows but i think by the end of the season he will be viewed as one of the best wingers in the league( if he isnt already) and a key member of the team.

Also from the man u vs man city game out off Nani, silva and young only Nani I think had a good game. Silva played very central and had some nice touches but young didn't really do anything, couldn't get by Richards once and played the ball backwards most of the time( great ball for the goal but ). I think they will both be good buys for their teams but at the moment I am glad we signed downing.

Welcome.

Yep, a lot of mixed views here with regards to Downing. I think everyone can agree that he was over priced for a start. However, I will support him and I think he's better than I gave him credit for. His performace against Valencia was very good.

Hope he hit's the ground running. I wish we signed Mata also. Mata had the guile and ability to drift into dangerous positions and Downing had the knack of getting wide and pinging crosses in. Would have been refreshing to have them as our LW options.

Thanks for the welcome, it wouldve definetly been great if we had signed them both. In the press it was being mentioned as one or the other but I think we really need them both(or now downing and another winger)to provide not only quality but competition. So I still think we are a winger short and should be looking to bring someone else in for the right side but It probably won't happen this transfer window. The signing of Downing probably wasn't at the top of the "fans wish list" but he does have the attributes to be a really big player for us this season.

The highlight clip from the Valencia game indeed has me hoping. He could very well do well and make me rate him!

If he does well against Sunderland, i'll admit defeat with no shame, and jump into the bandwagon!

Looking at the 3 names Ryan posted, I think I'd actually take Downing instead of 2 of them.

He'll be ace this season, and some on here will hopefully have to eat humble pie.

it's all well and good drooling over a great goal (manu) but all that's relavent is we win games and downing will help us do that. they don't pass out extra points for techincal merit.
