Can we find the Lavia?

Again with the heavy caveat that I have no clue how good or bad Lavia is, but Southampton fans on reddit and other places seem to talk about him the same way some of the knowledgeable posters on here talk about Caicedo. As in he possesses the talent to develop to that level and beyond.

Even if the clause wasn't valid until next season, couldn't City just scrap that 20% sell on clause and buy him for 40m anyway if they wanted? If Soton's 50m valuation is indeed because 10m would go to City.

Isn't that just a longer version of what i said?

If Thiago isn't leaving, and Klopp sees a significant role for Bajcetic, may be difficult to justify a move for Lavia/ Thuram.

We do have 9 midfield options currently:

DM: Fabinho, Thiago, Bajcetic
LCM: MacAllister, Jones
RCM: Szboszlai, Henderson, Elliott
DLP/RB: Trent

Think we might be trying to focus now on getting Colwill.

Question marks over Fabinho, Thiago dead half the time, Henderson lacking legs. Would be a stupid move not to bring in at least one more. We should be looking to phase out Henderson and move on Thiago. We won't be able to sign Lavia next summer.

I don’t see Thiago as a DM - more filling in the LCM position.

You could include Morton in the mix as possible DM cover.

I don't see it happening, I mean we already have Bajetic and he'll be home grown soon.

The club takes you from lows, to highs, to lows again. So is £100m out budget? CJ, Elliott, Morton, Steph have a lot of learning to do and none have the ceiling of Lavia or Thuram.

CJ - is a more experienced player and makes less mistakes than Lavia. I think if CJ showed Messi levels - people on this site and the others won't give him credit. It's fucking dumb, but then again 99% of people on here won't recognize talent like Steven Gerard does, so you can can't be blamed if you don't recognize how lucky we are to have a player like CJ in our ranks.

If that’s it for midfield recruitment then we really are cunts.
After having lost Millie, Ox, Naby (not to mention Gini who we never replaced) and seeing Fabinho, Thiago and Henderson in obvious decline we decide to add two players?
Jesus wept.

CJ is a good squad option... that's it. He has learn to keep things simple and not complicate things by trying to dribble past 5-6 players.

I will also be a bit disappointed if we restrict our midfield signings to two. But there always be somone else. Last year, around the same time, there was only one human being capable of playing in our midfield. This year, there is atleast four.

Also, not a fan of depending on someone injury prone like Thiago in his last year of his contract. There is really no incentive for him to exert himself and risk injury and the next payday. There is a good chance he is not included in many of the match day squad due to ankle pain and other minor issues.

Are we assuming Curtis is going to stay fit enough to matter? Him and Thiago are the injury concerns, hendo and Fabinho are the decline concerns, badger and Elliott are they up to the job concerns (i do like badger though).

“We will see. A transfer must make sense now and in the long-term,” he said. “We have eight midfielders. We still have enough midfielders. It’s not that we lack midfielders, it’s just some of them are injured. This isn’t a good situation, I don’t like it at all. We have to see how we react on that, but for sure not panic.”

My concern is that we have not addressed the main issue - lack of a physical defensive midfielder. Bajcetic is too young to be depended upon. Also, we don't want to risk overplaying him and injuring him again.

I’d be ok with that, Ox and Naby really aren’t worth mentioning….Milner has barely played in midfield the last few years. The 2 we’ve got in are superb, plus we’ll have a rejuvenated Baj back plus Morton in the mix. If we sign 2 defenders no one can really have any complaints FSG haven’t put up…and I’m no FSG fan.

Badger looked best in the 8 position so I’m imagining he’ll provide cover for the left and right advanced midfielders in our new system (as well as emergency cover for the 6), whilst we manage his minutes next season.

We still desperately need a specialist 6 in that case, given Fabs looked decidedly in decline last season and Hendo never was a reliable 6, even before his legs started to go.

Of the remaining links, Lavia makes absolute sense in the context of both next season and for long term planning. Get it the fuck done.

Milner made over 40 appearances in all competitions last season, predominantly in midfield.

Minutes played?
1284. Clearly, he wasn't first choice when everyone was fit and shouldn't really have been anywhere near the first team, but it's not an insignificant gap to fill. We definitely need more than two fresh faces in midfield, otherwise we'll be relying on the likes of Morton, who is Championship level.

Well as someone pointed out in another thread if no other midfielders come in that still leaves us with 9 midfield options for 3 places and that's with the exception of Morton who can take most of Milner's league/FA cup minutes.

That's still more than ok for numbers, if we had Valverde Modric and Tchuaomeni instead of Fab Hendo and Thiago I really don't think anyone would be worried so the numbers aren't in issue.....I've read we may look to bring Lavia or someone else in if Thiago departs.

It isn't just about numbers though is it? We lack any kind of physical dominance in centre mid. Pressing is one part of it, and the two we've signed will be much more effective than what we have, but we need the potential to physically dominate in central midfield and none of our players can currently do that. Henderson used to be able to do it to an extent. And Fabinho was better at it than he was last season.
