If people want the likes of Shelvey, Suso and Sterling to come through, they need to take that into consideration when proposing all of these other players. It complicates matters, but it also makes it more realistic and constructive.

Agreed. Under Rafa especially it seemed that we talked a lot about youth players coming through and yet insisted on padding out the squad with pointless and expensive senior players.

Now we actually do have some young players that are worth trying out. We need to create space for them in the squad.

I don't think have the fans that would allow the club to tread water while these youngsters are brought through.

Shelvey, Suso and Sterling are still too young to make a significant impact in the first team. Bench for now.

We don't need to tread water. We just need to make a little space in the squad and not buy players like Voronin, Degen and the like.

martinez is pie in the sky but if he were should it would be

first choice - cover
lucas - spearing
martinez - henderson
gerrard - jonjo

so all the players we want to groom/blood would still get games.

I haven't seen anyone suggest players with the express purpose of padding the squad. my suggest of hoilett and martinez would go straight to into the first team and adam would be sold to make room for henderson and jonjo

Then I wish people would stop saying the opposite! This forum seems positively schizophrenic at times!

I think people want it both ways.
I want to see the likes of suso and raheem given a chance but in early carling cup games. I see the CM as a major problem and it needs to be address now and I don't see anyone on the books or in the reserves that can do it.

Downing-We should take a 8-10 million hit on him and I'd still be happy.
Johnson-Not that keen on selling him but anything over 12 million would be too good to turn down.
Adam-We should get back what we paid for him,not a bad player but doesn't have the discipline to play at a top club.
Aurelio-No point in keeping him on the wage bill.
Kuyt-Looks a shadow of the player he was and as much as I loved him I think selling him in the summer makes great sense(albeit a year or two too late).

To play for the first team and make a significant impact are two separate things. We should have an established side consisting of class players. But there is room for reserves/youth players as well. Late subs, Carling cup, Europa league etc.

I want a top class striker. Anything else would be a bonus, considering our likely budget.

I agree, but there are countless 'Sterling/Shelvey/Suso MUST play' posts all over this place and they're not exactly great examples of 'joined-up thinking'. To balance the two concerns is just very difficult, and those who suggest otherwise are being disingenous.

Definitely, he's superb, however he won't leave Dortmund, why would he, they're flying high at the moment.

Quite true. They have a togetherness in that squad that I havent seen with a club in a very long time. A team with an average age of 24 winning the league 2 seasons in a row over Bayern is quite an achievement. However, down the road based on the fact that he's much more likely to be tempted away than the average german player who seems to rarely leave the bundesliga i'd hope we can at least make an offer. He'd be a great addition both on the pitch and in a marketing sense in the far east.

I think some people make off the cuff comments regarding Suso and Sterling starting through frustration and sometimes I don't blame them.
Watching Downing,Kuyt and Henderson having poor games week in week out bares frustration beyond belief knowing that these kids are probably hungry and more than capable of taking their chance.

Exactly. It's a mix of frustration and desperation.
We want them to make an impact so badly that we tend to forget that Sterling is 17 and Suso is 18.
Shelvey just turned 20 and should have got more chances this season considering how Adam and hendo have played.

you can bet all your money if Martin O'Neil bought Carroll he would be aces for him, with the right manager and style of play I still think there is a very good striker there.

I would keep Downing but not bothered if Adam goes

Is this something you've heard on the grapevine or a prediction? Regardless i'd ship off;
Maxi
Kuyt
Aurelio
Adam
Cole
Aquilani

Downing's close, but I'm not quite sure.
That's pretty much spot on mate. Especially as it's only five players Mark asked for. 🙂

We need transfer funds and as much as I love Agger, I think he can be used to raise a significant amount of cash.
We have to take risks I guess, and Id sacrifice Agger and Johnson.
We'd get about £35-40 selling those players.
I was starting to like you Modo... now you've just ruined everything.

Noooooo!!

I'm sorry Kris.
Like I said I love Agger and I'd rather not sell him but in the last window we sacrificed Meireles who I also liked.
Agger is good enough to play for the best teams in Europe and I think he's our most valuable defender.
The original question was hypothetical, but if we were in dire need of cash....

.

Well it would help if, when the rest of us try to remind people of that, we didn't get shouted down and condemned for being "against" them.

Our owners are Gazillionaires.

We don't need more money we need top players in every position.

Downing
Johnson
Lucas
Kuyt
Maxi

From this season's squad, Im not talking about players on loan or fringe players lie Aurelio.

Sterling will force his way into first team football. The other two will probably follow the route of the modern footballer, only making a proper break through into first team football between 21-22. Then we'll have to wait 2 years to see if they are good enough. (that's if we hold on to them)

Even though I love Shelvey and wish he was starting every game for us.

Look mate, I know that. We all know that. What irritates are those who insist they play now and go crazy if anyone sounds a note of caution.
