We are a shambles defensively. And Rafa Benitez thinks this means we need 2 defensive midfielders to help them, this imo has helped make Aquilani the worst signing of the season so far (granted he'll still come good). All season long the repetitive argument has been this dip is because we lost Alonso, or more recently with great reason Sami Hyypia. But truth is Alonso isn't better defensively than Lucas is. He relieved an lot more pressure but he's definately not better defensively. Hyypia was inspirational and was a safety net but it hard to believe the big fella is the whole reason.

I miss Alvaro Arbeloa our steady eddy defensively strong and versatile defender who started to develop some offensive skill (not enough but a well taken goal highlights that). I think we truly miss him more than we admit. And we sold him with "good reason" because his contract was up at the end of the year.

But hell I even miss his celebrations as we scored another late winner.

Magic is truly that. But I remember how last year Portsmouth would play 3-5-2 with him at RWB or a 4-4-2 with him at RM. Magic could be a replacement for Dirk (bad for his england career, good for Liverpool 😀 ). I wouldn't give up on Glen at the RB position but we'll always get less cover than good ole under appreciated Steady Eddy

He was shit.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Gump-esque.

I personally liked him, but our form is down to the sale of better players, or rather, the belief that they would have stemmed the influx of goals. Arbeloa would have suffered from the form of the team methinks. he was caught out too often (he's no insua level of shite but he still is a bit), and didn't venture forward enough. The games where johnson has dragged us out the mire and scored a goal or assisted has got us our points total thus far. We could be in a worse position without him, but by the same token, that s just my belief.

If we played a 4-3-3, and had a decent LB that didn't let people meg/outrun/beat him effortlessly/continuously, I don't think Glen or the rest of the defence would be as exposed.

Also if we actually attacked more with better players, instead of playing 4 DMs and scrapping with the likes of Michael Brown and Pompey, we'd not have to defend so much.. and again, the defence wouldn't look such a shamble.

The fact we don't have a good midfield (remember when we had "the best midfield in the world"?) means the ball keeps on coming back at us.. GnT get isolated.. and Carra and Agger get put under more pressure than they should.

We sort out the midfield (Benny/Kuyt-Aqua/Gerrard-Masher-Riera), and I firmly believe, the defence and attack will start performing a lot better.

Arbeloa - meh.

So, summing up; it's all Lucas's fault
[/quote]

Close.

Lucas doesn't pick himself each week.

I'm sure there's a poster somewhere that'd think lucas sucked off rafa daily....

I was well happy to see the back of Arbeloa

So what didn't you like about him. That he always supported the attack but was able to recover the vast majority of times. The way he shut down Messi on his first start. The way he was very good the air. Or its just that he obviously helped our team defend better than it is now.

One-paced, often out of position, poor in attack, gave away lots of free-kicks

Ass, these discussions never go that well for you. Have you ever wondered why?

I'd like to still have him because it would allow us to experiment with Johnson in midfield.

He was a handy little player to have, but there were few tears shed when he left.

Arbeloa was competence personified, you were never going to get anything more, which was the problem, really.

He'd of made a quality squad player.

Not in this case.

We've got one poster saying we're missing him. That's it.

I liked Arby. I posted once before that teams need a mix flair players and good solid no-nonsense pros. He was our Gary Neville.

And he could probably do a better job on the left than any of our current batch with the possible exception of (the rarely fit, and can't possibly do 3 games in a week) Aurelio.

There's no way our problems this season have been created by selling an average right back.

I didn't hate him or anything but wasn't that fussed about him leaving.

I liked arbeloa but johnson is better. the end.

Yepp. Wish it was Magic & Arby instead of Magic & Degen tho'.
