Xabi is way overrated on this forum

IMO we're bound to miss, to some extent at least, a player who pulled the strings so well in midfield last season. I'm encouraged, though, when I think back on previous big name departures and how we've filled the gaps. We lost Shanks but Paisley stepped in. We lost Keegan but signed the King. We lost Rushy but signed Aldo, Digger and Beardsley. It can be done.

With a midfield of Lucas and Mascherano? Nah. It's ok winning one game without him but to say we'll be ok is pushing it Doc.

I still want us to go for attacking players rather than midfield players not matter how hapless people think lucas is.

if we go for silva or villa thwn they will be because I doubt will have money left over for anyone else.

Some super-duper signing. I'm not saying I'd trust Lucas as our midfield lynchpin all season, not at all (although it is fair to say that in certain games he did a good job).
 
I don't reckon we'll get a big name. I think the money will be split on a defender, a midfielder and an attacker (or maybe just two of the three) and it won't be anyone to initially be THAT excited about.

I'd never heard of Xabi Alonso before we signed him.

It's partly why I trust Benitez to land someone really good.

I can't believe that Alonso's departure is being taken so lightly. He is a terrific all-rounder, and is possibly the most visionary passer in the Premiership. Also he has consistently behaved with class and intelligence, he must be a very good influence in the dressing room. Hard to imagine him getting into a bar fight about a Phil Collins CD. It will be very, very hard to replace him. In fact, barring Fabregas, I can't think of a player that could replace him adequately.
