What's a better gamble?

There is a severe shortage of top quality strikers on the market this summer.

Needs a big transfer from someone to start a domino impact of freeing up players.

I read somewhere that Ferguson had a limit on number of transfers per window so that he does not disrupt the squad growth in terms of talent. If most of our purchases this summer hit their mark, then hopefully we will follow that strategy with only critical 1 or 2 purchases every window.

Ginsoak moved enough in and out before he started winning. Once you have a winning team it's pretty standard - Shanks, Paisley, Fagan and Dalglish did that. We've brought in a ridiculous number of players in the past two years - I mean, think if they'd all gelled, it would have been almost unmanageable. Our next signing needs to be a major player, and I don't think Benteke is the one.

I agree with you on all points. English is not my first language and sometimes I dont get communicate subtle points as well as some of you. What I wanted to convey was pretty much what you said. For example, several times Ginsoak had resisted the calls to make an expensive purchase on a perceived weakness( by fans) when he thought he had the team. I think when Nistelroy left or was started to be marginalized, there was decent pressure on him to buy a striker. But he recognized the potential of Ronaldo - Rooney partnership and then when Tevez was added ( He was a striker alright but not used in the way Nistelroy was used) he created the next great team.

As you said it is pretty much standard among the managers you stated. No wonder they are the legends of the game.

It takes a level of confidence and security that a lot of managers don't have to rely on younger talent.

And that most managers when they have access to money, spend it on players like women in a shoe store with an unlimited credit card, and then spend the next season continuously playing them to justify the outlay.

I don't know why, but he doesn't seem to attracting any real attention, especially from teams in the top half. I thought he'd have been snapped up early doors.

Probably a legacy of his failed medical at Hull City 2 years ago but since then he's played in well over 90% of QPR's games with no injuries. The rumour is that the failed medical was down to a dodgy knee but there was fuck-all sign of that last season. I'd say for £12m-£15m (and providing he passes the medical) he's a great buy.

Well, I don't think we're that far off the CL as the squad stands now. Because I feel there's a lot of natural improvement within the squad - largely because a lot of players couldn't have been any worse or ineffective than they were last season. (in 6 months time people like Hansern and RedNinja will say Rodgers is a good manager again, rather than acknowledge that a players form can fluctuate regardless of the manager and is more likely to be affected by other issues)

I also think the additions outweigh the losses already.

So I don't see the glaring need to do a deal. That's my starting point.

With Benteke himself. I said a while back I think he's someone we should consider signing. He's 24, has a 1 in 2 Premiership record. He was coming off an achlles injury but looked to have recovered, then he hit a great purple patch and became a bit overvalued.

For me to think 32m is a good deal I need to think he's got improvement left in him.

I don't think he's capable of being better than a 1 in 2 striker, I don't think he's going to improve much from here on out in himself.

Then there's the risk of.moving to a different team (I feel basketball metrics have this bit nailed, football needs to do similarly). Some players need a lot of ball to be good, others don't. I don't know how many touches Benteke needed in a game. I wonder how Benteke would fare in a team less reliant on him and less likely to try to force the ball to him.

I don't think he's top class, I think he's very good. And i always feel, with not a lot to back it up, that players like him have a three year window in which they excel and look better during. I wonder if next year is year three of that window, and similar to Heskey he blazes a trail in his first season then never repeats it.

I could live with 20m and a three year deal, happily

I would love to have Benteke as a 3rd choice striker, like a much improved version of Lambert. But I'm afraid if we spunk 32M on him it will be much harder to think of him as an "option" rather than an automatic starter. And I don't want him to block the progress of Origi, who will probably become a better player than Benteke by the time he's 24.

Or we can just buy a goal-scoring winger like Yarmolenko to take some pressure off Ings and Origi to deliver right away. Sturridge, Firmino, Origi and Ings is a pretty good strike force and a big improvement on last season.

Talk of the devil. 1/10 into betting suspended to go to newcastle this afternoon. They'll worship him there, and he'll probably do well.

If nothing else... Berahino.. We could get him for less than 20 million then it would be a decent deal. He is also relativily young, so we could recoup most of that if it did not work out..

He fits into Brendan's ethos.. much better

Any other manager (Who's has a varied playing style) Benteke..
