Watford (H) pre match

It's frustrating we don't have players who look to hit passes to the other wing in midfield. We've obviously got several players who CAN do that, but they don't do it. As a result we are very predictable and slow in the way we try to move the ball from side to side. Several times yesterday Milner had loads of space if only we'd hit the ball quickly straight out to him from the left, but instead it was a case of someone looking up, seeing him, then passing the ball back to VVD, who'd pass it forwards to Gini, who'd then pass it back to Matip, who then finally passed it out right to Milner - who by this time had been closed down. We need to mix it up every now and then and really up the pace.

This is also one of the things Trent does really well - big cross field passes out to Robbo.

I'm not seeing the love in for Shaq to replace Bobby if I'm honest. Since he was given a starting role for a couple of games around Xmas, and then when he has come on lately ( Bayern, yesterday ), he has done next to fuck all.

Yeah - Shaq was shite when he came on against Bayern. Positively invisible in fact.

Klopp did note afterwards that Shaq was recovering from a virus and hadn't trained. I guess next season we'll have several young players in the senior squad, but we just don't have enough good options on the bench.

We must be ready to see Ox on the bench soon. I wonder if he’ll some mins against Burnley/Bayern/Fulham with a view to being able to start post international break

My bad. It was the West Ham game I was thinking of. Knew it was a midweek match.
Yeah, except he didn't come on against West Ham, either - he started the match

EDIT - my turn to get confused. I switched to talking about Keita rather than Shaq in this post. You are right, Shaq did come on against West Ham. Mea culpa

Bobby had a scan today on his ankle. Hopefully it wont be to bad, but knowing our luck it will be 4 weeks.

Id have Gini in the team if fit but he looked absolutely knackered 2nd half on Sunday and that waent exactly a high octain game. Perhaps the after effects of playing through illness, if hes still not 100% Id go with Fabinho Keita and Henderson.

While we're all tossing around meaningless stats, in Keita's last 10 games for us we've scored a goal or less 6 times. In Henderson's last 10 games we've scored a goal or less 6 times too. In Gini's last 10 games we've scored a goal or less 5 times. Him starting guarantees nothing, granted he's a more offensive player, but the dynamic of the midfield isn't necessarily the problem, even if the balance could be better, it's our inability to get many goals beyond the front three. And at the moment they're misfiring too, so goals are hard to come by. Beyond Shaqiri there's NO ONE in the squad other than the front three who are nailed on for 5+ goals a season (save Milner, largely through a few penalties).

Creativity and goals are a problem, they were two years ago and until he gets fully adjusted to us, Keita doesn't look like adding any/many.

Very true, but I think what Klop sees is what I think many of us see when we are in advanced positions - which is just bad decision making, and really slow predictable passing when in the final third. We need to speed it up, we are there at the door of the opposition defence more than most teams, but we just need to speed it up and make the right passes. Sometimes - like the way Matip did - we need to maybe just drive into the opposition when they least expect it and this will open up the necessary space for others.

The issue with facing brick wall/park the bus teams, is always a problem - even City have issues with them but they overcome them more often because they move that ball around much faster than we do in the final third.

I’d employ Matips forays as a tactic.

How the fuck can you defend against that, even he doesn’t know what’s going to happen next.

He scares the fuck out of me when he does it. He runs forward with purpose, then about 30 yards from goal gets confused and usually lays the ball off to the opposition & is then out of position. When he did it against utd there were only two possible outcomes - a free kick or a Utd breakaway goal. Fortunately the former won out

I hate them for exactly that reason.

Against Utd it almost worked, which is actually more scary cos he may do it more often. When VVD does it he find the pass, so it's much less scary. Even if the ball is lost moments later he either makes sure he recovers it, or simply strolls towards our area in time to regain his position before they get there, using some kind of time portal or something.

I wish VVD would do it more often. He’s more than capable and has a wicked shot on hum

Just as an aside in the same number of games (and probably less starts) Shaqiri has 6 goals and 4 assists. I think Keita has NONE of either in spite of being given virtually a free role.

And if Morses motm thread matters to you (anyone) in 25 games
Keita 1 motm, one 2nd place, one 3rd place.
Shaqiri 3 motm, three 2nd place, two 3rd place.

Me I prefer the old goals and assists to liking a players ‘work no one sees’ especially as I dont like having to have TWO eyes on a player.

*wink*

Wow mate. A few Words in Bold and a WHOLE SENTENCE IN CAPTITAL letters and I would believe you literally stole one of Brendans posts.

Im pretty much in agreement with Brendan about most players, Wonderman the obvious exception and his early insistence that Firmino was anything but a G.

We are of the old school, we like our players to actually help us win games.

Keita obviously isnt shite. Even though his first few months have been difficult, the talent is there.

They are not exactly comparable statistically, are they? Keita is a CM, Shaqiri is an AM/winger. I'm sure Keita has a lot more interceptions, clearances and passes per game. Keita does have one league assist BTW, even though it was kind of a cheap one.

Not disputing your larger point though, Shaqiri has contributed far more this season so far. But I believe Keita will step up and prove his class.

I'm never going to live that down am I ? A meme for life.

I hope so.

He cost good money.

Im just being an arse really. We all want him to come good.

Well you have supported us long enough to have noticed by now that most players who comes in with a bang and delivers straight away fades away and ends up like a farth in wind while our slowstarters seem to develop into steady mean machines. I have no clue were either Shaq or Keita is on their respective curves.

*handshake*

Yeah, he cost money and time too – it will be 2 seasons of waiting for him to come and then waiting for him to adjust this summer and we have passed over other good CMs (Rabiot, Seri?) because our eggs are in Keita basket. We depend on him coming good.
