United post-match

This was the strangest fucking game of football I've ever seen. I thought United were there for the taking, but our players just collectively froze – there was no creativity whatsoever and even the simples passes were miles off. When even Milner's can't pass the ball straight you know something is wrong. The pressure in the build-up got to us, that's the only explanation for me.

The only positive is that we didn't lose and are still top of the league – by a bloody point.

Off topic, but I did a TV show with the O'Reilly man - David Kelly, I think his name was. Very nice man, but incredibly posh Irish accent. Vert actorly. We did this weird show called something like 'Night Hawks' - it went out live in Dublin, set in a bar, you'd have real drinks, real drinkers, lots of cameras, you didn't know when you were on camera and when you were just getting sloshed. Anyway, the two of us were chatting in the make up room, when this little Scouse bloke came in - he looked the spitting image of John Lennon circa Beatles for Sale - same hairstyle, all black outfit, cuban heels, the whole thing. He didn't say anything until seconds before we were due to go out on stage: 'Er, one thing: can no one mention the John Lennon thing? It's just that I'm fed up with it'. Cue explosions from the really burly-looking production staff: 'What the FECK??? We only hired you, we only flew you over to Dublin, because you are a Lennon lookalike! What else do you do?' 'I'm an electrician'. 'Well, matey, that's not newsworthy - now go out there and be fecking LENNON!!!'
Night Hawks was brilliant.

Yep, I honestly think the pressure of the game, plus the bizarre stop start first half due to injuries caused us to not be able to get into the game.

This is not a new thing this season, it has happened in many games, and we have got away with a lot of shit. Strange thing is - I don't actually think these breaks have benefited us in anyway, they (the attack minded) players look really off the pace now. I am one of those that believe the more games they play the more fine-tuned the players become with each other. These long breaks - they come back and the passing is all wrong, along with the decision making.

I think maybe we should have started with Keita, Fab, and Henderson, and bought on Gini later for Keita when he tires. Also - I have no memory of what Sturridge did when he came on, I think he should have just moved Salah to the middle and put Shaq on when Firmino went off.

That must be the worst Milner has played in a red shirt, for a guy whose famously a 7/10 player that was big stinking 3. I cant remember the last time we looked so toothless. When they put up 2 mins injury time I initially thought 'fuck that theres been way more stoppage time' then I consoled myself with the fact we wouldnt have scored if the game went on for another hour.

Milner fades every single season. His games should be managed, instead we're taking a jaded 33 year old and chucking him in one of the most demanding positions, then have Salah play wider so that we aren't exposed down the flank. In doing so we're less threatening in attack as well.

Game kinda needed a Keita in the middle funnily enough!

Becker : 7 - good save but other than that not much to do. A couple of decent catches.
Robbo : 6 - passing and crossing still off. He's really going through a bad patch. At least his defending was good.
VvD : 8 - where would we be without this colossus in defence ?
Matip : 6 - the usual sublime to the ridiculous. He's been trying for weeks to get that OG attempt on target and when he does it's disallowed. He must be gutted.
Milner : 5 - can't fault the man for effort but that's about all that went right for him.

Hendo : 4 - We had Fabs to anchor the midfield so with all the effort he put in it was no surprise to see him hooked as there was a total lack of creativity.
Gini : 3 - Anonymous. Shocking. I even wondered if he was on the pitch at times. He should have been hammering and driving through Perreira & McTominay.
Fabinho : 7 - one of only three players to come out of the match with any credit. His integration has been handled beautifully and is now an integral, if not a major key, player in the team.

Mane : 3 - misplaced passes, awful attacking decisions and just anonymous. One of the worst games he's played for us.
Firmino : We missed him, a lot.
Salah : 5 - can't fault the effort but it seems like nothing is coming off for him but give credit to Shaw for an excellent defensive performance against him. Should have been moved inside not hooked.

SUBS
Sturridge : 2 - thanks for the memories now please just fuck off. Waste of space, contributed absolutely nothing.
Shaq : 3 - anonymous
Origi : 4 - no impact.

Klopp - 0 - Terrible decision to play Milner at RB. Terrible sub to bring on Sturridge for Firmino. Terrible decision to sub Salah for Shaq. Terrible decision to bring on Origi when Keita is the man that could, maybe, have found a way to unsettle their defence. Terrible that we lacked drive passion and a determination to win, he came not to lose.

These ratings are fucking ridiculous.

Frogfish - 3 massive overreaction to an average performance, all over the place with ratings and a tendancy to be way over critical.

United played like fucking Palace or Cardiff with everyone behind the ball and trying to counter. We allowed them pretty much nothing. Yep we created little but those ratings are for getting beat 3-0 not for a tough draw at old trafford.
Were we great? No. Were we bang average? Yes.

Did we go away to a team thats won 12 in their last 14 including Spurs and Chelsea and took a point? Yes.

Bit of perspective,

I get the whole 'we are top of the league' brigade, but are we just going to keep clinging to that whilst we see such a large advantage disappear? It feels desperate - we are letting our own destiny slip with some seriously lacklustre performances. The only time this year I can think that we actually tried to attack an opposition was the start of the second half versus palace. We seem happy to get to 75/80 mins without having a proper shot on goal (our only shot on target was a VVD head that i still think was aimed to the back post as a cross) and STILL do nothing about it. No intensity, no desire. Yes, we are still top - but continue being flaccid like this and it really really won't be for long. I find all these top of the league posts a bit condescending.

Btw I think we were actually lucky not to lose this game - United had a number of great chances they hit straight at Alisson and were often threatening when they got the ball in our third. We did absolutely fuck all when in the wide areas. If we are trying to change our game to be chucking crosses in the box we might want to think about playing a #9 who attacks crosses, because we don't at present.

Not sure where that come from. They offered zero and deserved nothing from the game. That they had a couple of free kicks swung in at us over 90 mins is at least what you should expect, but aside from that they didn't look to even string two passes together in our half. Mostly they just cleared over the line at their own half and didn't even bother to put it into our half.

The throwing of crosses into the box did my head in. It didn’t work the first dozen times so stop doing it.

We did need to have someone who could carry the ball past a player and shoot from distance. That’s what I was expecting from Keita when we signed him.

A draw is better than a loss but we have no more life lines left. We need to win every game from now on.

I'm a bit surprised that we didn't attack Man U more, especially after they used all of their subs in the first half. I was a bit disappointed that Keita wasn't given a chance in midfield. Would have been a better option than Shaq.

Hendo is in trouble.

Often we end up with 2 or 3 players trying to play it around the edge of the box e.g. Trent & Mo or Robbo & Mane, usually bolstered by Firmino or one of the CMs - but all of this game it just appeared to be expecting Millie or Robbo to just chuck it in the box. Some of our better moments were when Milner & Robbo both made runs in behind and got on to through balls - but we just couldn't do it enough, or get anywhere from it.

This game was another missed opportunity - but hard to know how much until United also play City.

Did anyone really think it could be plain sailing to the league title, opening up a 10 point lead in January & gradually growing that lead as we play non stop scintillating football? A season has ups & downs, periods of good form, periods of poor form, that's normal - the City procession last year was an absolute anomaly that very rarely happens.

We may not stay top of the league every week from now to May, but we will still win the muvvafucker

I think we got sucked into a midfield battle rather than just outplaying them. Pog was all over us defensively at times - which is annoying to see. It's easy to say with hindsight but we got the middle 3 wrong - one of Hendo or Gini needed to be giving way to Shaq or Naby.

Id disagree with a few of those but not by much, a 3 for Wjinaldum is ridiculous though. He was miles better than that. In a game where all we really did was recycle posession he looked our most composed player on the ball.

Our strategy didnt seem to be based on him driving through the middle and leaving a gap, you dont pick a midfield of Wjinaldum Fabinho and Henderson to tear into the opposition, they were there to control the ball and strangle posession from Pogna, which was pretty effectics. Going forward it was more about exploiting their lack of cover in wide areas and getting the fullbacks in behind. Which is why Milner was so disappointing, his distribution totally let us down from a number of good positions which we had clearly worked on. I think Trent would have made us much more dangerous pushing on but Klopp clearly didnt trust him, on the opposite flank Robbo is starting to look a bit leggy, hes not bursting past players on the overlap as frequently lately.

I think 9 wins can still win us the league. Considering we play the bottom 6 and the shite that is Everton we can do this.

The thing that annoyed me most yesterday, was the normal Sky insistence of flashing up the stats on how we have the most goals from corners in the league whenever we get a corner. As soon as that appears on your screen, you know we wont score from a corner.

I can only assume those stats include when we kick a corner to the first defender, it gets cleared and then we score in the "second phase", as I don't remember many where we scored (sort of) "directly" from a corner. A Matip one early in the season and a Fabinho one a month or two ago are all that come to mind ...

Gini was the only midfielder who gave us something different and has the balls to hold onto the ball when United pressured us. He made some runs forward to try to add the the offense and is basically the only midfielder trying to win the game.

The other two midfielders, even Fab, played it too safe. Before a united player even starts
jogging towards either they will dispose of the ball. As a result united stay in shape and didn't have to double up on us because we were just too afraid to hold onto the ball in important areas.

Amazing you didn't mention this after the Bayern game when Hendo showed he can more than cover the anchor role well. Gini was terrible yesterday too, as were about three quarters of the team. You don't half talk some shite. After a bad collective performance Hendo is in trouble, after a brilliant individual display you say nothing. Why am I not surprised by the shite you and Froggy spew about him? Because you're a pair of predictable morons, probably.
