Really not trying to be a smartarse, but I never wanted us to buy him, never thought he was any good and am annoyed to be proven right. My posts on here all along sadly point out that in this instance, albeit a rare occurance, I've been proved correct.
A lot of stuff has been written about our defence, but to me you start with a top keeper. Then build a back four in front of him. Often a new manager brings in his own man between the sticks. It's one of the first ways to stamp your identity on your new team. Sadly this clown has been garbage from day one (sadly also this was masked for quite some time with that debut peno save) and we will never be tough to score against with him as first choice.
BR got it wrong. Mignolet would be a decent keeper for someone like say Sunderland (funny that), he's nowhere near the standard we need.
But what the hell do we do about it? Is there even a realistic option out there for us? I can't stand his stupid punched up face.
 
Reina at his worst was still far better than Ming at his best. Some people thought otherwise....we have really made a few dodgy decision in the last five years or so...starting with the sacking of Rafa and appointing Roy Hodgson.....
 
He sounds a bit deluded here. It's unwise, at best, to claim you're doing everything you can to improve, because that merely underlines how far short he's still falling of a decent standard. :

“Together with the goalkeeping coach (John Achterberg) we look at the games and we analyse everything the day after a game together.

“We look at every little detail. We look at some things that people wouldn’t even think a goalkeeper was featuring in at that moment, Like a cross that goes out of play or a throw that is 50 yards from goal. We’ll look at my positioning.

“There’s no point looking or worrying about what anyone else is saying or analysing because we’re doing everything we can to make sure we improve. We all have to make sure we do our best and the performances will come.”

Liverpool’s defensive record, both this season and last, has been the subject of much debate. They shipped 50 league goals in the last campaign, and have leaked 15 in 12 games already this.

Mignolet, though, says it will take a collective effort to improve matters – at both ends of the field. He said: “Confidence comes into play both with scoring and defending.“But it’s not about individuals, it’s about the whole team. We win as a squad and we lose as a squad.

“We have to make sure as a team we perform the best way we can and we will become stronger if we all stick together.

The whole team is seems the same atm.
 
I'd be looking at Achterberg position aswell tbh. Ming has gotten worse during his time here, and imho he was a good goalkeeper for Sunderland and hasnt improved at all.

Not paying 5 extra mill for Begovic seem such a horrendous piece of business now.
We knew Ming had issues with his distribution but still bought him and has asked him to perform a role he isnt suited to, that on us as usual.

I've always said he has potential and that he would perform better with a well worked defensive unit infront of him. Sadly our defence look even worse and he looks lost for confidence and his performances have been pretty shite.

I think we need an older GK with experience who wont be effected by the pressure of playing for Liverpool, and has the authority to command his area and the defenders infront of him.

Cech would be perfect.

Yes, Achterberg seems a very nice bloke, but his job is to improve the keepers and I've seen zero evidence of that. When some impressive coaches have been bombed out of the club since Brendan came in, I'm really surprised he's not changed this post. If Cech DID come maybe we could offer him the prospect of becoming, when the time is right, a player/goalkeeping coach - he couldn't do any worse.
 
Achterberg background comes from the lower divisions, why we appointed him in the first place, I am not so sure
 
It was just Buggins' turn, I think, as he was around at the Academy when Valero left and just stepped up for want of a suitable (cheap) alternative. There were really strong rumours he'd been sacked at the same time that Comolli left, but maybe he did the George Costanza trick and kept turning up as if nothing had happened.

I cannot believe we signed the cunt.
After 3 games I called it and was told to fuck up.
Hes a terrible goalie.
 
We should be considering replacements, but Mignolet does get too much stick. He is not the root cause of any of our problems. We can change the GK and it would see a marginal improvement in our points accumulated.
 
For the life of me I can't remember who it was, but I remember someone on here arguing that he was better than Reina. Whoever you are, pls pipe up and apologise. We all make mistakes.
 
I said ages ago that we need another coach. A defensive coach. It wouldn't make him the world's best, but it would help him and the non unit in front of him, who would then all help each other. BR needs to accept this

Still better than the Reina I remember. Keep in mind I only watched his last two seasons with us, but in that period he must have been the worst keeper in the league.

I honestly cannot remember Reina making a single notable save, and remember his play costing us goals at times.
 
Reina in his pomp was the best keeper in the league. His form really did wane in his last 18 months with us. He was beaten at his near post (as cloggy stated) a few times and was making errors. Looking back, I'd still have Pepe mid slump ahead of Mingolet right now. He had a swagger about him and was great with the ball at his feet. Plus, I could have kept my avatar and I wouldn't have had to start an amazing thread about changing it.

Whirly is a new convert to Liverpool Football Club from the States (I think) and he missed out on Pepe in his pomp.

@Whirly, treat yourself to some vids on youtube, Reina made some glorious saves. He was one of the best keepers in the league for a while.

On a side note, I always remember Gene hating Pepe. Damn you Gene.

I have no doubts he was great in his time, but my main point was that when you take just his last two seasons without any input from the past, he was shockingly bad.
