The Hodgson IN thread

Ever since the year England beat Germany 5-0, Germany had completely rebuilt while England had gone on another great hype journey!

You chalking off the German goal in that result fella??? 😎

Anyway I think Roy is the perfect choice. He has the right credentials to have a good go at it, no worse than all the others have in the last 40 years.

I hope he drops the old guard and that may even include Stevie, we all know Harry would have bought Scholes back, picked Terry and his nephew Frank. He will get more slack from the press and fans if he goes with the youngsters in this tournamount.

Yeah what is goal between you and I? 😉

This, right here, is the problem.

How many of those players will realistically be around for the world cup?

The Germans always play a younger side than us & it pays dividends. We have good young players but they're never given chance as a group with one or two older players, IMO they should be.

Hold on, i'm not having that, is this the European Championships or the World Cup in a couple of months?! Well you can be the one telling Gerrard he's on the bench because a kid with potential is starting ahead of him. I'm all for the philosophy 'if you're good enough you're old enough' but the manager must pick the best players right now, not ones who might be great in two years time, otherwise Henderson et al will be going to the Euro's. Who's to say a group of players they honed in on now and earmarked as having a bright future then turn to shit or suffer from terrible injuries and cannot recover the same, because two years is a long time in football to be simply putting all your eggs in the one basket and aiming for the 2014 World Cup. Eriksson has already been down the route of handing caps out willy-nilly to anyone with an English accent. International teams like NI, Wales and Scotland would give their right arm to participate at a finals tournament whilst you're suggesting England select a bunch of youngsters. Surely England aren't arrogant enough to blood youngsters in a major Championship?! devaluing the tournament like their clubs have already done to the Europa League. There are friendlies and qualifiers in which to try that. The difference with Germany, Spain and England is that the former have been very successful at youth level already and they possess the quality and quantity of players coming through, and playing regularly, in their domestic leagues. Who are these good young players btw, the same youngsters that failed at the U21 European Championships last Summer? Although you could counter that by saying Stuart Pearce was in charge I suppose.

The German team that reached the Euro Final in 2008 was almost the same average age (27.4) as the team I selected for England (27.5). Their average age fell to 25.1 for the 2010 World Cup but I believe the players chosen, deserved to be in the team because they were the best players (as I cannot think of any German's that should have been playing in their place), not because they were being groomed for another tournament. Here are the average ages of the major championship finalists in the past decade:

World Cup 2010
Spain (26.6) - The Netherlands (27.6)

Euro 2008
Spain (25.8) - Germany (27.4)

World Cup 2006
Italy (28.6) - France (29.2)

Euro 2004
Greece (28.1) - Portugal (26.7)

World Cup 2002
Brazil (25.9) - Germany (27.7)

The current England team is pretty much the same team Germany demolished in Africa.
Problem is the England players are two years older and the German players have gained two more years of experience. If you catch my drift....

The England team that were demolished in South Africa:

----------------------------James------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------
--Johnson---Upson----------Terry------Cole------
--------------------------------------------------------------
-Gerrard-------Barry-------Lampard-----Milner--
--------------------------------------------------------------
------------------Defoe---------Rooney----------------

Half of this team shouldn't get in the current set-up, four or five at the most for me.

England always play like they're scared at international tournaments resulting in dull unambitious football. Which really makes Hodgson quite a good fit since he is the king of dull unambitious football.

Another f*ck up by the FA. But at least we don't need to worry anymore, because Hodgeson has not got anyone good at LFC to choose from, and at the same time he won't want to select an LFC player.

The likes of Terry and Lampard...even Ferdinand and Gerrard to an extent are finished as international players. Some of them are just playing based on reputation.

Gerrard still can perform, and it is not bad to have one or two experienced players, but the rest have no right to be guaranteed a spot, i don't see that changing any time soon...

if Roy comes in and plays a youngish team with no fear then fuck it he may do well.

The same Roy that once upon a time decided Chris Smalling wasn't good / experienced enough to play for Fulham yet he was signed by United and instantly went into the first team?

I can see Hodgson's team now:

Wobinson
Wichards Tewwy Wio Bwidge
Bawwy Gewward Wwwilshire
Stuwwidge Cwouchie Wooney

Although he has won titles in Sweden and Denmark, he was largely unsuccessful at the two biggest clubs he has managed, Inter Milan and Liverpool.

And Henchoz, who played under Hodgson for Switzerland, fears that may be his undoing.

He told Drive Time: “He wasn’t a big success at either Inter or Liverpool. When you train with Roy every day, it can be a bit boring as you repeat the same motions.

“I wonder if big players at big clubs are really prepared to do that type of job. At smaller clubs, where players want success, they are more prepared to do the work the way he wants it done.”

Despite those reservations, however, Henchoz does believe Hodgson can lead the Three Lions to glory.

He added: “For me he’s a good choice. He did a tremendous job with Switzerland. Before he took over we had not qualified for a major tournament for more than 40 years, then we qualified for the world Cup in 1994 and then Euro 96.

“We had some average players and were not a great team, but he did a great job tactically, working hard and teaching every player what was expected from them.

He’s very passionate. He’s on the training pitch, coaching every single day. As a player you can feel he loves what he is doing. He’s got the passion and tries to give that to the players.

“I think he can bring England success. He’s very disciplined and will ask that from the players. They might not play the most beautiful football. Sometimes, especially going forward, some players don’t get the freedom they would like. But they would be hard to beat.

“England can lift a trophy under Hodgson. Tournaments are always difficult and, when you reach semi-final, little details will make the difference. That’s where Roy is an especially good manager, and that’s what makes the difference at the top level.”

Wonder if Glen Johnson might lose his place in the England team/squad when Hodgson takes over.

By all accounts, the two of them didn't see eye to eye when Roy was here.

Yup, good for us I guess, bad news for him.
Richards and Walker are currently ahead of him. But Johnson's more experienced.

It'll be interesting to see what happens as Johnson's been England's no1 right back for a few years now, then again he's not had as much competition.

Richards and Walker have had great seasons.

Former Liverpool player John Barnes , who earned 79 England caps, thinks Hodgson can succeed under the correct expectations.
He said: "Roy Hodgson is as good as anyone, he's competent, he's a good manager and he's proven at international level, although the expectations with Switzerland and Finland are not what they are at England.
"People have to take a more pragmatic approach about England and if we quell our expectations, he will do a good job. We have to be looking to get results and be competitive rather than thinking we're the best in the world and should try to play like that. Roy will give us consistency.
"We're not Barcelona or Spain so let us get a manager who will play to our strengths and be pragmatic and organised."

haha , john telling it as it is . England are a 'mid-table' team .

Roy will be a success if everyone just lowers their expectations . 4th in group stage , pat on the back , well done roy you've done a good job .

Alan Shearer:

I spent five weeks in Roy’s company in Cape Town during the last World Cup in my work with the BBC.

What I found was a man with an incredible knowledge of the game. Any player whose name came up, he knew everything about them.

His tactical analysis was excellent, built up over 36 years as a coach all over Europe and even with UAE.

He was also a real gentleman. People will point to his time at Liverpool as a black mark against him.

I’m not sure what went wrong there but he has bounced back and done a great job at West Brom.

So we have a good man in charge. I just feel slightly sorry for the one who was expecting to get it.

it's crazy, they should have gone for a talented young manager and given that manager a brief of clearing out the 'golden generation' (golden..what a joke) and blooding the youth in the euros with an eye on the world cup in two years time. the fa haven't got a fucking clue. I'm supporting the czechs.

I bet Smalling wishes he had stayed at Fulham this morning.

Anyway, I don't think he'll do well but things don't always work the way you expect in football and a one off International stint might be ok for him. Good luck to the guy anyway, he might not fall into the trap his predecessors have done in picking players on reputation rather than form/tactical suitability.
