THE ASHES

A pleasure to watch todays play. As a little aside I though KP and Cook did very well in that last session. Tomorrow is going to be amazing!

Yep. I've got a bloody driving lesson half 11 to half 1 unfortunately, hoping kp & cook are just walking into lunch as I get back in the house!

Down to the feckin umpire not giving him out when he was clearly stumped.

It's a good point, and I understand the frustration over Trott's dismissal too, but it's worth remembering England have had two iffy decisions go their way too; Rogers dismissal was just knicking leg stump and for the umpire to call it going at that angle was insane. Similarly I can't believe they didn't give Root out for Starc's in-swinger early on in that 2nd innings. As hawk-eye showed it was crashing into leg stump.

Some fairly ordinary umpiring so far for both sides. Which is a pity as this is a truly belting start to an Ashes test.

Apparently that lad plays for the team here in WA. Never heard of him. Great knock tho. Couple of early wickets and England might bottle this.

Yeah, but the rule relating to the Hawkeye replays is that if the ball is not hitting the stumps full-on, the decision remains "umpire's call." I think that is a reasonable compromise because it means that the referral system eliminates the rank bad decisions, but leaves some decision-making with the umpires on the field.

I know Portly, I just couldn't believe that the umpire didn't rule it out to begin with. It's his job to call things that are careering into leg fucking stump.

The Trott call is shockingly bad for a number of reasons.

1. It's given not out on the field of play, so it has to be proven to be a shocker by the onfiled umpire to be overturned.

2. Snicko is not in use due to it not being reset after the Root wicket.

3. Even without the use of Snicko, to the naked eye it looked a 50/50 call at worst, yet the dozy 3rd umpire decided to change the original call.

We're probably due a few dodgy decisions against the Aussies though, they've deffo had the rough end of the stick in recent ashes series.

So how many do we need to win then?

I can't see the Aussies getting upto 280 again, but we're a long way off of that at the moment. A 230 lead and I think it's probably a 50/50 game.

Play to 430 then declare to take a lead of 350 and take our time about it too, so by the time the Aussies get back in the pitch will be fucked and Swann will have a field day in taking wickets..

We should at least look at batting for the whole of Today and till Tea tomorrow..

Yep couldn't agree more. That decision was crazy. In the whole 3-4 years of DRS that has to go down as the worst 3rd umpire decision ever.

Yeah I reckon you're about right, anything above 220/230 odd and I can't see Australia chasing that down.

Everything hinges on this Cook-KP partnership this morning for me. If Aus can get them out early its their test for the taking.

Sounds strange but I think it really is down to KP. He's not exactly a Trott like accumulator of runs. If the Aussies get him early England are in trouble. If he gets in though and The Lying Rag is shining then it's party time.

Agreed, but full marks to Pietersen for making himself into a Trott clone yesterday. It must have been a supreme effort of will to leave so many balls alone that he would have loved to have a swish at! 😀

Fair comment.

Many people in the broadcast media have been saying that most England supporters were hoping that Agar made his century.

I do hope that is not true because it would make most England supporters totally spineless. This is the Ashes for Christ's sake!

When Swann took that brilliant catch to dismiss Agar I was abso-fucking-lutely DELIGHTED!! 😀

Well I've got a lot of Aussie buddies and I'm also married to one - They were chuffed to bits with him. I wouldn't begrudge the young lad a couple of extra runs in order to grab his ton. It wasn't to be though and in the end I was well pleased he finally got out.

Now though it's back to business and lets hope Cook and KP step up. The first hour is crucial (as the old adage goes)

Ha ha - Mate I'll man up today for sure. Beautiful sunny day, very dry wicket - They have no excuse not to plunder runs!

If one of KP or Cook is still in at Tea then I expect to see one of them change their approach to start attacking. If we are still batting at Tea with one of these still in I'd expect us to be at around 250-275..

An England collapse would be unforgivable because it's a great batting wicket . . . as Agar demonstrated.

@Portly I agree but the nerves have set in - I can feel them from here. They look like a couple of bunnies in the headlights. They have a chance if they can make it to lunch.
