Thoughts from Stoke

I think it's a mistake to blame the players. Kenny has a large squad of good players and few injuries at the moment. The reason we couldn't score against Stoke was the way Kenny set the team up with three CB's and Dirk as the lone striker. Any fool could see that wasn't going to work. I am still scratching my head to work out how Kenny thought it was going to work. When Kenny looks at Dirk does he actually see Lionel Messi? :🙂

His choice was between Kuyt or Carroll though and Carroll has been shit, I was shouting for him to replace Carroll with Kuyt against City because at least he has a slightly better touch than Carroll and he has energy. Neither of them are quick or particularly good technically, so the Kuyt thing is neither here nor there when the alternative is a taller, slower, shitter version.

Regards Carroll 'blocking' shots, Henderson hit them at him, hardly his fault.

Carroll was poor though, from falling over through having blades on to not staying in the box enough he didn't impress.

though it was only when Carroll came on anything other than total ineptitude happened.
I am amazed a guy as honest and knowing as Kenny has not come out and admitted a horrendous mistake in his tactic and line up.

Carroll is so unsure of the flight of the ball and where the ball would fall, he chased for balls he would not be able to get thereby blocking other players' chances

Yeah but TBH that was more through them having to deal with another a different threat than Carroll really doing anything. He tried, but just couldn't get into the game.

He definitely should've started, if only to tie up two defenders at corners. I was in the kop right behind the goal & they were visibly shitting themselves, had two men on him & another floating behind too, hence our two best chances coming from corners straight afterwards as they all worried about what Andy would do.

Andy has at least scored a few in the league and offers something in the box. Kuyt offers nothing at the moment.

But, its a moot point in my book as they both should have started. As we needed two upfront..

My thought:
A ridiculously over the top deal for Bent is starting to sound good.

Thats so wrong, no offence but we dont score goals and people start screaming for a new striker.
We need creative wingers and creative attacking mids.
A Silva, Mata, Hazard type player. I've been saying for ages it seems its pretty fucking dire now.
A striker is just a bonus IMO. So we buy a striker Ok, whos gonna create the goal chances Gerrard. Then were back to square one again.
Not every striker is like Suarez and tbh we're relying on him too much.

I don't know if we're watching different teams Modo but we're not losing matches because of the defense nor are we losing matches because we're, in general, not creating enough chances. We're losing matches because nobody is putting away the plethora of chances that we're creating. We don't want another striker like Luis - unless he's a finisher as well; we want someone who's going to get on the end of chances like the ones Kuyt had with Stoke and put them in the back of the net.

That's why we're struggling to make top 6 rather than sitting on the heels of the mancs and Spurs.

every time i see these three and my head hurts and i cant believe we have spent 80 odd million:

carroll
henderson
downing

we could ahve got these three instead

cavani (at the time carroll was bought he would have been possible)
eriksen
hazard.

We bought sqaud players for the price of first teamers.
[/quote]

The first point and last points are valid.

The second point about we could of / might of bought is totally moot. Who's to say we didn't try, were priced out of, they didn't want to join or indeed whether they would have been better in our system or club.

Woland said something in the pub that had me nodding sagely.

It looked like Kenny decided he was going to try and beat Stoke with a weird formation. Everyone I spoke said more or less the same thing when the team was announced - "This will end up a draw".

Someone else mentioned that Dalglish is a tinkerman. To all in the ground, the Bellamy sub should have been made instead of the Carroll or at the very least at the same time.

Its very wrong that Skrtel, who is impressing me immensely at the moment, was more of an attacking threat than Downing and Kuyt combined. That's not Kenny's fault, but the fault is, he just seems to fail to recognise that neither of those players is in any form. Therefore we should start with the likes of Bellamy and Maxi, get a lead and then revert to fucntional players if they need to come off and we need to hold a lead.

Man City in the cup was a case in point. If we'd gone one up in the Stoke game and held on, I'd not be pleased with the performance but 3 points is 3 points and that is ALL that matters at the moment. Earlier in the season we were creating and not scoring and Kenny said we weren't getting the results we deserved. I think its safe to say we are now getting the results we deserve.
