THE ASHES

Finn over Bresnan seems a sensible option given how dry the wicket is. Finn is bloody expensive though.

Yeah but they had the groundsman on R5 last night and he indicated that the pitch is very dry and will start to cut up rough around the 3rd day. Bat first, put a score down and then put them in on a dry crumbling pitch with a fasty bowling from 10ft high given his high action and he will keep the Aussies very honest.

On a pitch like that he could get balls to jump off a good length to a good height and that will put doubt in the minds of the batsmen as to whether they play forward or back. You don't want to be on the back foot to a good length delivery or on the front foot to one that jumps at you!

Thanks Jon. Was gonna ask for streams or the like. In the pub watching this session but won't be for the rest of the weekend unfortunately.

Bit of a rocky spell here, need to keep these two in for a while or else. Poor form from the top of the order.

Solid from these two so far..

if they can strike a 100 partnership at least then i'd say we are back in control..

I can't see what is special about this Agar fella.. certainly likes giving the runs away...

cue the collapse... Reaching 250 here could even be a struggle now...

Hopefully they will Bowl the aussies out for less and the whole test match will be over in less than 3 days..

Engald batting the same way they have for the majority of the last 18 months...majority gets starts and then throw their wickets away. Here's hoping that Broad remembers he can bat a bit and keeps Bairstow company for the rest of the day

Siddell has carried their attack, hopefully our bowlers can keep them under a lot more pressure and keep us in the game. Too many silly mistakes for most of their wickets.

I just checked the betting odds. England are still even money to win the match. I suspect our bowlers may get us out of trouble again, though it will probably be nice and sunny when the Aussies get to bat! :-D

Just got in and found out that I've got tickets for Lords, so that's cheered me up a bit after seeing the score.

We really nearly to get at them as quickly as possible, wouldn't fancy our chances if they get 100-150 runs up.

What a first day.

I got about 4 hours sleep after that, and am sitting in worked fucking shattered.

Few thoughts:
- Anderson's ball to get Clarke was one of the best deliveries I've ever seen.
- That's why we love Siddle. Not the most technically gifted bowler's ever, but pure guts and balls all day everyday. That 5th day session last year when they were trying to knock off the Sri Lankan tail, and Siddle just kept churning in and bowling belters whilst dying with cramp and almost ready to vomit was sesnsational and pure Peter Siddle. The only bowler yesterday to consistently hit line and length.
- England were far too aggressive with the bat. Only Root waited for the ball to come onto the bat.
- Cowan's got to go. I know everyone's baying for Warner to come in, but I'd go for Khawaja, better all-round cricketer.
- Love Pattinson's attitude. He was all over Cook for most of the morning and got the wicket he deserved.
- England's day though for me. I can't see Australia making the 350 they need in this first innings to win this test. Smith will go early on day 2, and whilst they do bat deep they'll amble along to the same sort of score that England made.
- Australia want to win they've got to make 350, and then rip through England again. Cos day 4 on that pitch with Swann pitching it into those cracks is gonna be tough.

I think you may be too pessimistic. It's going to be a bright, sunny day tomorrow so it may be more difficult for England's bowlers to winkle out Smith, Hughes and the rest. I don't know what kind of freak weather bubble was hovering over Nottingham today because it was glorious weather everywhere else in the UK. Another potential factor that may assist the Aussies is that Stuart Broad has picked up a shoulder injury which must be quite a bad one as he didn't bowl at all on the first day.

Yeah the Broad injury is significant, especially if Finn has to carry more load than his body can handle.

I can't see Anderson, Swann and him having too much troubling knocking over Smith, Hughes and the rest. They'll get them all for 200 odd. You don't need swing or seam movement to get Hughes et al, just patience.

And one more thing:
- That England can't fill Trent Bridge for the first day of the Ashes is embarrassing.

You're joking, it only gets about 15k anyway doesn't it?

I heard the floodlights were on at 11.30. IN THE A.M.!!! What happened to the heatwave?

England should have no problem skittling the Aussies out for less than their total. This game will be lucky to see Saturday.
