I don't think it really matters. He's 23 already and he's going back to Portugal (I'm sure the pull of going home was strong, but I've not read much of any other serious interest).
Coutinho is only 6 months older than Tex. Tex has talent but not enough to crack the first team on a regular basis, at 23 it is in his best interest that he moves to play regularly as we all know that football is a short-lived profession.

I'm not sure about ever, but it isn't going to happen very often. If you do bring players through the academy on a regular basis then you invariably end up as a feeder club for the big fish these days.
It's a difficult balancing act, temptation is buy your way to the top table because getting their with academy graduates is less likely to give you that immediacy.
Still got high hopes for the likes of Brannagan and Ojo though.

Are you referring to the feeder club bit? If so, then I think we've fallen somewhere in between. We've let some big players go but have received some excellent fees for them, while also playing hardball when Suarez was wriggling that first summer.
The only one that really lines up with this thread is Sterling though, and there was no chance he was going to stay.
I think you've also got to say that FSG have tried a bit of the buying approach too seen as though all of the top five fees paid in our history have been under their watch. Problem is only one of those was a success.
Putting FSG aside though, when was the last time our academy really was successful?
Was it ever? It's never been anything like consistent, anyway. Obviously some gems in the nineties but that's about it. Nothing really before or after.

Nice guy... interesting player.. not what we need to win what we want to win. But I hope he use what he picked up here to make next step in a promising career!!

Apparently we will only get £250K compensation for him.
This kind of thing drives me potty. We didn't get him for free, we went out and bought him young for £830,000. I was pleased we did, he was a great prospect. But if you do that, pay him several years wages and invest a huge amount of time in his development, then sell him at a loss, what the hell was the point? The Academy doesn't just exist to find and nurture future first team talent; it also exists to generate money for its own upkeep by selling on decent players to other clubs. To do the latter we need better coaches, but also we need to take much more seriously the contractual side, whether it's to keep the best players or make a profit on the ones who move on. Ayre has barely any serious interest in thinking about such things.
Yes, that was exactly my point. A successful academy is a very subjective thing. If you look at any "successful" academies throughout the football world, how many of the players they produce go on to have long careers with their parent clubs?
So, if you are looking for an academy that feeds the first team; who is the example to follow? I can't really see one.
