So Yossi in the hole or Gerrard?

Aquaman will be fit soon so what would people like to see happen?

I think its clear for all to see now that Gerrard has been struggling badly this season in the hole. Whether it's the lack of a quality midfielder to knit everything together or something else but he certainly is nowhere near the standard of last year.

On the other hand whenever Yossi has had a central role he has been vibrate attacking threatening and either scoring goals or presenting chances for others.

He scored a hat trick against Burnley and against Utd played Kuyt in twice, gave Aurelio a free header from 6 yards, split the Utd defence for our crucial 1st and all in was at the heart of most attacks.

The biggest weakness we have shown this year is how easily our midfield can get overrun against attacking pacey opposition midfields. With Gerrard in there and Yossi behind Torres I think we could sure up a very leaky part of our team, while getting Gerrard more involved and getting the best out of one of most in form players thus far in Yossi.

What do people think is the best way forward?
 
Think the 1st choice midfield is fairly obvious when everyone's fit.

And as for Kuyt....erm.....well I guess it's not so obvious!

Yossi played on the right against United and has only recently proven to be more than a decent sub for us. Gerrard's scored the most goals of his career whilst playing in that position, and is one of the best players in the world. Hope this helps.

It's no Yossi's best position but I would prefer him there than Riera. Gerrard has to play in the hole behind Torres but only when Aquilani is playing.
 
I would love to see especially for home games:

gerrard--------------- aquaman

kuyt----------------------Yossi----------------------Riera

torres

with gerrard, aquaman and yossi interchanging. it will become very difficult for opposition players to mark them

To be fair Ryan, Yossi and Kuyt interchanged quite a lot in that game and almost all the good work that came from Yossi occured when he was more central - though there were exceptions. He had a chance to score himself and this came when he was on the right.


I've always been a fan of Gerrard being in midfield but if Aquilani can actually fit into the team and the premier league then having him behind Gerrard while our captain plays in the hole behind Torres may be the best scenario.


I must admit that for home games I do like the idea of having Gerrard and Aquaman in the middle behind Yossi in the hole.

Having said all this the Italian has a lot to prove before we're settled on him being at the heart of the team.
 
i've always believed that the formation should suit the players. if aquaman lives up to expectations i'd play

oops- I didn't realise- yossi in Riera's position and Kuyt in his normal position and that'll be it.
 
yossi playing on the left wouldn't be a problem if we had someone of johnsons quality at left back.
also ryan is right, it's pointless to leave kuyt out he is one of the first names on the team sheet.
 
Thank you D-Mac. I actually think that could work against shit teams, as Gerard likes to drift wide left, so he and Yossi could interchange quite nicely.

Against better sides, our lack of decent left-backs means we need someone like Riera there to provide protection.
 
We should drop Gerrard, we play better without him, the team has to take responsibility when he's on the pitch and the other players don't hide. Also, Gerrard overdemands the ball and too much of our play is directed through him when he's playing.

I think he could do a job as an impact sub.

My view is that we buy someone to replace Masher, and keep Gerrard where he plays best - in the hole.

wouldn't move back gerrard even then? Fair enough I guess you'd certainly be able to pick up a quality holding midfielder for a lot less than a quality forward.

Nope, and I never said that once. I was only pointing out that since statement, "has only recently proven to be more than a decent sub for us", was inaccurate. Give the lad credit - he was one of our best players last year in the push to overtake the Mancs.

This is his 3rd season for us mate, and only in the last few months has he started games regularly. It's true.
