Martin Skrtel has revealed that he almost left Liverpool last summer, but is now glad that he knuckled down and stayed.
The 29-year-old defender struggled to feature regularly in Brendan Rodgers' side last season, making 25 appearances in the Premier League and seven in the Europa League.
Napoli and Zenit St Petersburg were both interested in signing the Slovakian centre-back, but he eventually decided to remain at Anfield and fight for his place.
Skrtel has now emerged as one of the most important players for Liverpool, having scored four goals in 23 league starts so far this season.

"I would be lying if I said I didn't think about leaving," he told the Liverpool Echo.
"It wasn't easy for me after last season. I was on the bench in the second part of the season, and that was something new for me.
"But it is not easy to leave a club like Liverpool because they are still one of the best clubs in the world. After six years here, it was not easy to say 'okay, I'm leaving'.
"Before this season started, I just said to myself 'I will fight and work very hard to try to show people I am able to play and start the games'.
"I tried to work very hard in training every day and when I got a chance to play, I tried to do my best to help the team.
"After games like Saturday's (5-1 win against Arsenal), I am just so glad and so happy that I stayed.
"Liverpool are a massive club and I just wanted to prove to people I am able to play for this club."

Well, no surprises there. Not sure what to make of him this season, he's impressed at times, glad he stayed like.

Also those 4 goals at the top of the article, are they in the prem? Impressive that if so.

I was one that wanted him gone, completely changed my mind now, when he plays like this he's a very likeable player.

He's a very solid CB and I think he's earned himself another few years unless we get a silly offer ... As of next year:

1) Skittles
2) Sakho
3) Agger (unless we get a siller offer)
4) Toure

Solid.

He has been a very good CB for most of his LFC career but this season he has been bloody awesome.
He was awesome in the Kenny season as well. He has every attribute to be a world class centre-back, he just hasn't done it consistently enough though. If he could put another 2-3 seasons like the one he's having currently, he would approach Carra and Hyypia territory. But let's see.

Definately.

Never understood the grief Skrtel gets, similar with Lucas, Skrtel was our player of the season a couple of seasons ago, seems whenever he or Lucas hit a bad bit of form they get hammered and written off as shite.

Gets a ridiculous amount of stick amongst Liverpool fans if you ask me.

Sure, he's made mistakes but unlike some overhyped Liverpool defenders, he's produced consistent performances for a sustained period. That shouldn't be overlooked.

Is he actually bald? Like has no hair on top even if he wanted?

If we do sell him we should make him grow his hair. I reckon he's worth an extra couple of million with hair.

He's my favourite defender but could be overtaken by Sahko in time

Nope.

If Skrtel gets dropped from the side it'll be for a right-footer, not a left-footed Sakho. There's no way Rodgers (or most managers for that) is going to repeatedly play two left-footed centre backs.

No I mean as my favourite defender.

I think it will be Skrtel Sahko once he is fit til he end of the season.

Well, this may change as Ilori may break into those 4 once/if he finally gets some games for the reserves... 😉

It's mad, you see two right footed CB's all the time, but never two left footed ones? Anyway, I always felt more comfortable playing on the left for some reason, despite being right footed, with no left foot worth speaking about.
