Shopping for New Striker(s)

For the third strikers role, how about Ayoze Perez at Newcastle. He has scored only 7 goals but that Newcastle team has been really shit in attack. He looks comfortable on the ball, very good control, decent trickery.

More than decent trickery .. but we already have so many light-weight forwards I really want someone of more 'substance' such as a Benteke-like figure.

What gives people confidence Rodgers can set up a team designed to get the best out of a physical striker, such as Llorente or Benteke?

Carroll, Lambert and Ballotelli have all been disasters.

I wouldn't compare any of those to Benteke in any way at all ! A physical striker doesn't have to be slow .... no-one would ever describe Benteke or Lukaku (examples) as slow.

I didn't mention a lack of speed so I don't understand why you are going on about that. I am saying that Rodgers has shown a) an unwillingness to play physical strikers b) lacks the tactical nous required to adapt his game plan to play to the strength of a physical striker.

The last point is the most pertinent, and that's why I'm surprised to people recommending these sorts of players. Is it just down to lack of available options? Lack of thought? Or is there an actual reason people think Rodgers can get these players performing to the required standard?

Because right now, I can't see it.

Benteke is streaky as fuck, and isn't technically top class. Also, after his first really good season, he hasn't even been that prolific. Please stay the fuck away from him.

Is Benteke ever going to be world class? No.

Suarez, Ronaldo, Tevez, Ageuro, Rooney, etc etc... There are always young strikers available for top dollar who have the potential to become world class. Let's go down that route, rather than the Benteke/Carroll route please.

This seems like a pretty dry offseason for potentially world class strikers though - who is there? Lacazette? Firmino? I haven't watched them play but seem to be two of the names most commonly batted about.

Who should we be pursuing? I'm afraid we will find ourselves punting 30m on someone like Benteke only to find he is as limited as many have suggested.

Which I remember was used as justification that Andy Carroll might succeed under Rodgers and look how that turned out.

Danny Grahams role in that Swansea team was a bit different to what Carroll could offer during his time with us.
Firstly he had the mobility of a 50 year old 180 kgs Neville Southall.

But, I agree with your point. I want a striker that will suit our other players and bring us close to last season.
Imho Bacca would be that striker, or maybe Lacazette but that wont happen.

Agree, I'd even say that spanking it all on one striker this summer, along with some economical midfielder, is arguably the only business we should do, and that would leave us with a pretty balanced squad, along with a real chance of competing.

All we really know is that a preferred Rodgers forward, can play across the width of the pitch, presses hard and is pacey.

I'd say benteke fits that mould fairly well

Is there currently a 'new Suarez' out there at all we could buy? A tricky little bastard that is always grafting and harassing defenders? Not sure a big lumbering no.9 is going to suit us.

Liverpool have reportedly made a £3.2m bid for Jaime Baez
The striker is highly rated in South America and Valencia had been reported to be close to a deal before Liverpool swooped.
Reports say that the Reds are now in pole position to sign the Atletico Juventud man with an offer of £3.2million.
The 19-year-old has been in fine form, netting five times in 14 appearances and has a host of assists to his name.
Liverpool scouts are reported to have watched the teenager in action and Brendan Rodgers may take a gamble given the club's injury woes up top.

I don't want us to sign Benteke. But at this stage who could BR realistically attract?

There is going to be a problem attracting a top class name but the last thing we should do is go and spunk a load of money on someone we don't really want just because there is no-one else available at the time. We've done that too many times before and it's crippled us.

I have serious reservations about Benteke's suitability (at least for the current incarnation of this Liverpool team) and Villa will want a massive fee.... which will feel and probably ultimately prove to be (it always does) too much.

Agreed. We are masters at buying players that none of the four teams above us want but still managing to pay smaller clubs ridiculously over the odds. Surely if none of the top teams want them we can pay less, can't we?

Benteke is going to cost over £30m. Villa will be readying themselves to fist-fuck us half to death over this.

I get he's looked great for Villa - but, will he do it for us?

If we're going to spend £30m+ - get on a fucking plane to Lyon now and offer it for Lacazette - or... I don't know - there's bound to be a top striker we can pick up in the £30m+ bracket that's got the attributes we need.

The biggest fucking problem we have with signing players seems to be that we pick them based on their performances for teams playing different styles & systems and neglect to determine whether they'll actually fit in to the way we play.

Watching Lickie Ramblurt is painful.

Christ.... we pretty much signed Suarez and expected him to live off Andy Carroll's knock-downs.

We need pacy, technically good, understands how to make & exploit space, good work effort, can lead a line and can find the back of the net regularly.

If we don't at least try for Lacazette then I give up.

I think we'll sign Benteke, who I actually think is a good player, but perhaps not good enough and we'll get bummed for the price.
