Shopping for New Striker(s)

25 - 29-year-olds, 25 games or more played, top 5 European leagues. Some overlap with the 19 - 24 list; not sure why, maybe because some guys had birthdays during the season. Anyway, by total league goals scored this season so far (doesn't include guys from Dutch, Portuguese, Russian, Belgian leagues):

Vietto and Dybala both look a little lightweight to me. The Latin strikers who've done well in the PL (Aguero, Suarez, Tevez) have all been in a similar mould - strong upper bodies, low centre of gravity, tenacious work rate. These two seem to be more in the Juan Pablo Angel and Franco di Santo mould. Or are they nippy and technical enough to be successful here?

I don't know about Dybala, though I think he actually does look a bit stocky. I'd say that from what I've seen of Vietto (3 to 4 games + clips focused on his action in some games), I'd say he ticks the boxes in pace, quickness (turning), skill and work rate. Yes, his frame does look a bit lightweight - he's about the same height / weight as Sterling, and same height as Hazard I think. Building upper body strength is something that, if necessary, could be worked on quite easily though, I'd think.

Surprised no one has mentioned Higuain in the potential list. Have seen quite a bit of Napoli this season and he would be a great fit for us. Great movement, finishing, technically strong and with Rafa's position at Napoli uncertain, this could be the time to go all out for him. With Origi & Ings (supposedly) also joining us this summer, we could end up with quite a strike force if we get Higuain.

I suppose because the premise I started with for the thread was that we'd likely go for someone under 24 or 25. If we ignore that, then I'm pretty sure he'd be one of the names people would look out for, given his track record.

I'd advise against Higuain because I don't think he'd be very successful in England. Great goalscorer, but is reliant on good service. The best of the finishers in Serie A (Shevchenko and Crespo) have struggled in England. I suspect Higuain will be similar.

Cavani on the other hand is more intriguing. I know Rosco would probably advise against signing a 28 year old for top dollar (and I'd generally agree), but his record is sensational. I also think he's a brute of a striker, and those kinds of strikers (Drogba, Shearer) have done well in the PL in their late 20s, early 30s as well.

Good work, but doesn't make for great reading. Cavani and Aubameyang are the only ones worth considering amongst those who 'might' be available for us. Do you fancy anyone else?

A name that's not mentioned at all but we should cast an eye over is Kevin Gamerio from Sevilla. Out and out striker and great finisher.

Nice player, but he's 28 and he's never really been prolific. Probably a good buy for a mid-table side though.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've always seen Higuain as a 'finisher', lacking the mobility, work-rate and speed to create something on his own.

I think if we had a midfield creating chance after chance for our strikers then he would be a good fit, but that's not what I see at the moment. He would be an improvement over our current shit, but that's not basis from which to judge a player.

it's all about profile - someone who matches the following:

21-24
playing in a second tier euro league
scored at least 18+ goals a season for two seasons in a row
excellent technique
and ideally very good pace

would cost 15-25m.

Never thought i'd say this but Charlie Austin?

Appears high in all the lists i've seen here, has scored goals for shit teams, has played in England?

Seems like a decent option.

Yes, it's pretty grim reading all right. There's of course guys outside the top 5 leagues - it just needs a bit more work / time to put those lists together because Squawka doesn't have a "Next 5 European Leagues" feature and my limited sources means having to scrape them from elsewhere, such as transfermarkt. But for players in those leagues, we'd probably be looking in the younger age bracket again and the fella won't be what most people would call a "proven". If you're 28 and not playing in the top 5, it probably won't be because you've somehow not been noticed all this while. 😉

Portugal top division: U-23... the green ball column is for assists; the red icon for goals from the penalty spot; the 3rd last column (clock + goal) is minutes per goal, and the last column is total goals. Screengrab from transfermarkt.

[3] Oliver Torres is on loan from Atletico Madrid to Porto

[5] Carlos Mane - some may remember this pacy and tricky guy from a couple of the Sporting Lisbon academy teams that kept beating our lads a few years ago.

I would slightly disagree on the suggestion that he is reliant on other players laying the chances for him. Below is a link of all the goals he scored last year for Napoli (his first in Serie A). I believe he has a lot more to his game than just being a finisher. He scores all types of goals, including brilliant individual efforts. His movement off the ball into space or goal scoring areas is exceptional. He is technically also very good and takes a mean penalty, which will definitely be a plus given the absence of Gerrard next season.

@cloggypop - what's this kid Jurgen Locadia from PSV like? It seems like he scores or assists pretty much whenever he's given a good number of minutes, but for some strange reason (not injury-related it'd seem), his minutes were drastically reduced from last season, even though his numbers from last season looked very good for a 20-year-old. Even the season before that (12/13), he also assisted or scored whenever given minutes.

Haven't seen much of him. Luke de Jong is first choice for them up front and I think he is second highest scorer in the league after Depay which will be why he isn't getting so much time.

For the third strikers role, how about Ayoze Perez at Newcastle. He has scored only 7 goals but that Newcastle team has been really shit in attack. He looks comfortable on the ball, very good control, decent trickery.

Hell of a goal yesterday that he scored. Haven't seen much of him otherwise though.

I really like Carlos Bacca. Works extremely hard and very clinical.

30 mill euros release clause and is 28 though. But would be a great signing. Bit of a Suarez "light".
Shame we didnt go for him and not Balo..

Suarez light reminds me of this fella

He still looks lightweight even when surrounded by kids.

I'd go for Llorente (barely plays for Juve) & Jackson Martinez if we can afford. Llorente can control the play, is excellent in the air and will love English footy. Martinez is probably the best striker we can get without being shafted cost wise (i.e. Benteke)
