[article]Chelsea will win the chase for Southampton’s brilliant young left-back Luke Shaw – but only if they can guarantee him a starting role, writes Alan Nixon in the Sunday People.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho has made finding a long-term replacement for Ashley Cole, 33, a priority and the highly-rated Shaw has moved to the top of his list.

The West London giants will get a ‘yes’ from Shaw if they can convince him there is a regular place available.

Shaw has been watched by all the top clubs – both at home and in Europe – but his sights are set on joining Chelsea, the club he supported as a boy.

Previous overtures for his services were turned down as Shaw, 18, and his family were not keen to see him play a fringe role, but the picture has changed now that Cole’s role is up for grabs.

Chelsea may make the decisive move in January - and that could free up young Blues defender Ryan Bertrand to move to Liverpool.

Kop boss Brendan Rodgers was turned down when he bid for the 24-year-old in the summer, who has lost patience at Stamford Bridge where right-back Cesar Azpilicueta is currently playing out of position on the left, and could be up for a switch north.

Mourinho’s spies have also been watching Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno – but his £25million price tag is putting them off.[/article]

Is Bertrand that much of an improvement over Enrique?

I might be in the minority here, but what about a short term deal for Ashley Cole?

I havent seen that much of Bertrand tbh. Shame we didnt go for Alex Telles who went to Gala. Cracking left back prospect.

Why is Bertrand not good enough for them?
And if he's not good enough for them is he good enough for us?

This. Bertrand's been there for a while and hasn't established himself even as second choice behind Cole. I don't really see the point of going for him, especially when we have other priorities for improvement - DM, arguably CB, another striker (don't think two are enough) - which are more urgent.

Haha. Good point. It is a bit concerning though that he's being kept out of the team by somebody playing out of position.

Yeah, thats my worry aswell. Shaw look nailed on for Chelsea so we can forget that one.
Moreno looks good, the Sevilla left back.

It's also worth pointing out that deals like Sturridge and Coutinho are the exception rather than the rule.

The "why isn't he getting any game time then?" is still a valid question, though in fairness Chelsea is one of the few clubs, where there just might not be a good answer (Real Madrid being another).

I've not see enough of Bertrand (he's looked a similar player to Ashley Cole when I have though) to really judge but it does concern me that we might be paying near enough 10M for a 24 year old effectively looking to start his career proper. That's a lot.

Another thing to consider, particularly for those who want their fullbacks to defend first and foremost, is that Mourinho often favours what you'd call more 'solid' fullbacks. Then again, he played under Rafa, didn't he?

I was speaking to a mate whos a season ticket holder at Stamford bridge about him a few weeks back. doesn't rate him.

Although we had the same discussion RE sturridge this time last year and Chelsea fans absolutely loathed him, so yeah, lets see what happpens.

*I'd be surprised if we spent £10m on him!

I think he's alright. Haven't watched him week in week out though but he was good enough to play in a champions league final 2 years ago.

Not all Chelsea fans hated him. One or two posters on here went on a couple of their fansites and plenty of their fans were complaining that they'd let Sturridge go when they didn't really have much else up front which would worry other teams.

I think Shaw is a talented player, but just because he's young, left footed and plays for Southampton doesn't mean that he's the next Bale.

I don't know a single fan that wasn't critical of him, he was under-played and mis-played, they all say that but they will also tell you he was greedy & thick when on the ball.

Yeah, this is what I heard from all of my mrs family.

I've enjoyed being smug thus far.

From the little I remember of Bertrand he is decent going forward but not too interested in defending. Am I way off here?

I've been to stamford bridge and seen him play only once, he was boo'd and heckled by the home fans!

I've also been pretty smug, I've got a feeling he wont pick up where he left off once he's back from injury though, unfortunately.

Nah, he won't be as effective on return, but it's been a great ride thus far. He'll score goals for us, that's all I care about.

I say screw Shaw and let's try getting Rodriguez from Wolfsburg or Willems from PSV.
