Rafa Benitez wants to add another right back to his squad to cover for injured summer signing Glen Johnson's absence.

The England international is still out recovering from medial ligament damage and is expected to be out for some time to come. Liverpool's injury worries are mounting and Rafa wants to assure he's getting the best out of his most important players.

Despite impressing in the position for most of Johnson's time out, vice captain Jamie Carragher was given a tough time by Wolves winger Matthew Jarvis on Tuesday and Benitez wants to bring him back into his preferred and more effective position in the center as Liverpool's poor form this season continues.

With neither Philipp Degen nor Stephen Darby impressing in the role so far, and promising youngster Martin Kelly also sidelined, the race for a short term replacement is on for the Merseysiders.

However the Spaniard told the Liverpool Echo that he won't be rushed into panic buying;

"We have to be careful with what we do. There are not too many good players around who are available and we will think about it. We still have some time but we will not rush if we cannot find the right player for this position."

Valencia's Miguel Monteiro, Wolves' Richard Stearman and Manchester City's Nedum Onuoha are all potential targets.

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Saw this mentioned in another thread. Right back a priority? What?
😱

You have to wonder about his state of mind if he really watched that Wolves game thinking "what we REALLY need is another right back. That'll make everything better"

You are fucking kidding me. Play Degen. Play Degen. PLAY DEGEN! Don't waste another fucking cent. I'm beginning to not care if we ever give Benitez another cent to play with.

(I can't believe I just shouted to play Degen. )

I mentioned this yesterday. Pick the pic that best describes Rafa.

Yes, generally. God, he's bought some turds.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt here.. there's no quotes in that article that suggests Rafa believes right back is the priority.

Maybe Johnson is broken beyond repair?

Maybe he found out Degen is going to be broken.

Maybe he found our that Carra is no way good enough for RB

Maybe it is decoy that he wanted a LB.... maybe

Maybe he's a complete mentalist and needs to be sectioned asap.

That it was 'priority' or just that we needed one?

After right back I am sure his next priority is a defensiv central midfielder...

Or Lucas's doppleganger!

Shouldve kept Arbeloa then Rafa.

He'd be about the best fullback at the club right now.
[/quote]

He wanted to go though, didn't he?

What did we get for Arbeloa? £3-4M? From a footballng of view we should've kept him and used Johnson more at RM.

Give him more money.

For right back we have Johnson with experienced back up of Degen and excellent prospects in Kelly and Darby. For attack we have Torres with promising back up of Ngog. 4 right backs, 2 attackers ... and we need to reinforce the right back slot?
