Rafa Benitez today challenged his young stars to use Liverpool's pre-season preparations as the ideal opportunity to impress ahead of the new campaign.
Spaniard's Daniel Pacheco, Mikel San Jose, Daniel Ayala, Hungarian duo Krisztian Nemeth and Peter Gulacsi, and local defender Martin Kelly trained alongside some of Anfield's senior players as the Reds returned to Melwood on Monday.

Benitez is urging the youngsters to make the most of their chance and stake a claim for first-team involvement in 2009-10.

"We have already had conversations with the likes of Pacheco, Ayala and San Jose and we have told them that it depends on them," said the Liverpool boss.

"They are now training with the first team squad and this is their chance to show what they can do ahead of the new season."

Liverpool will play their first pre-season friendly of the summer against St Gallen in Switzerland on July 15.

Lets hope they do show what they can do, especially Nemeth and Pacheco.

Did Pacheco not show him what he could do last summer?
...was going to post the same. He had an excellent pre-season last year but didn't get a sniff once the real stuff started.

Let's hope Rafa has more confidence in him this year.

He only started getting it together at the end of the season. I hope Rafa takes it easy for half a season, get him back to tip top and then give him a chance if he's looking the goods.

Are there more subs allowed for next season? If so, surely these lads are going to get more of a chance.

rafa should show more faith in his kids in the C. the team is usually half first team members (usually the ones who can't get a game) and the kids, it should be more kids and a couple of experienced players.

Rafa's a stubborn fucker, and takes a lot of convincing.

The kids should be used in Carling and FA Cup matches. If they don't get through a round then it's no great loss. Although I dunno if Benitez will agree, we've been 3 years without a trophy now and the pressure will start to grow...

Ayala? Hmmm.

That was exactly my first thought too.

Ayala isn't even good enough for the reserve team, maybe not even the U-18s...
A little harsh there. It can't have been easy playing against Arsenal's jet heeled kids alongside that big, slow, clumsy fucker Kennedy.

Ayala is pretty rash at times but isn't a lost cause just yet.

Benitez has said this kind of thing before. I can't see it happening really.

The route from the academy to the first team appears to be extremely difficult indeed. Even if these guys do well in friendlies then the next step I suppose is Carling Cup games. However, if they play in these they are lining up with the dross of the first team squad, not the top players and so as soon as we reach a decent team, out we go and most of these players are not used again, some of them drift out on loan somewhere and (as we know) rarely ever return.

You could argue that they just can't be good enough but sometimes players will benefit and improve from playing regularly with top players at a higher level.

Every time I've seen him play he's been shite. And when you're that slow in the reserve league, how can you take the next step up to the PL? He'll be out on his arse quickly.
