Pre Match Pre Match - Leicester (A) - Sun 16:30

Play Nuñez, mostly to irritate everyone, but because why not. Sub him at 70 or whatever. We only are going to try to play football for about 10 minutes, so it's kind of irrelevant who is up there for most of the game.

We've used 24 players this season. Only Arsenal, Forest and Newcastle have used the same or less.
Thats also the top 4 teams in the league...

Soton with 3 managers and 35 players. Its gone well for them this season.

No one is advocating for using a huge amount of players, but for using the ones in the immediate squad more effectively

Interesting Arse have used less with the injuries they have had. Guess mins played may tell a diff story. Kind of have some sympathy with Slot on this one, I don’t think the squad when given the chance has offerred enough. Can’t think of too many players who have when given the chance whom has been screaming to replace a no 1 for a sustained period apart from Bradley when fit and include Kelleher in that.

Minutes played is a better indicator than amount of players used I think

Absolutely, but it was a post created after the "forgotten" about issue with certain players.
Its interesting that the 4 top teams have used the least amount of players.

Agreed. It was just interesting that the top 4 teams have used the least amount of players.
If Slot had trusted Endo, Darwin, Chiesa, Robbo and Elliott (or their replacements next season) or had Gomez fit. We might have seen more rotation.

It’s a point I’ve been trying to make a few times - you want to win a League then you want a small squad with minimal changes game to game because you’re looking at and wanting consistency and familiarity.

It’s no secret or surprise that the more you play a settled pair of CBs the better your defence becomes.

Everything works better the more players play together - until it doesn’t either because of fatigue, form or opposition figuring out your game.

Indeed, and its also why you seldom see teams going far in both the CL, domestic cups and winning the league.
Just to many games.

24+ is probably a good number of players. Just need to rotate more with squad players that are available, and giving youngsters a chance in the cups etc.

Think that's the key; 24ish players, all of whom get a reasonable amount of minutes.

Let's say 15 get the lions share; but the remaining 9 needs to be used more consistently. They should be getting 800+ minutes as a minimum, just to give the squad the legs to progress deeply in competitions

Agreed, but it’s also what sets aside the truly great teams - those that not only compete on all fronts but win on all fronts - doesn’t happen often, but it does happen.

Still think there’s something else at play with us - I watched Villa today - they could have absolutely smashed PSG in that second half and easily got another 2 goals - they were full of running and invention.

It was also their 50th game of the season (same as us), they’re one of the form teams in the League and they have a good chance of winning the FA Cup.

I also noted that Watkins and Ramsey started on the bench - and they look like they’re effectively rotating their forward line better than us.

Not saying they’re a better team than us, but they look like they’re finishing the season stronger than we are in terms of playing well and energy.

It usually happens to teams like Man City.

Villa are 7th in the league, 22 points behind us and have +3 in goal difference.
Being in good form now in the league won’t give them anything.

They rotate their forward line better cause they bought/brought in 3 players in January.

Yesterday was their all time cup final in decades. If they weren’t running yesterday, well God knows when they were supposed to run.

Villa are also 22 points behind us and have lost 8 to our 2 in the PL. Maybe some of their rotation hasn't been effective.

Oh...I get it, we're supposed to be shit. It explains why we got outplayed against PSG and Newcastle.

I know you're Swedish but come on? You aren't this stupid, surely?

We weren't shit in the home game, and were a Quansah heading away from beating them. I'd wager that if there was a few games between the CL exit and the cup final we would have looked much better.

Watching us in the last 5 against West Ham pissed me off because deep down the Klopp DNA is still there.

Being more sensible against Southampton at home means we would’ve beaten Newcastle and been the ones smashing Villa last night.

Still with a massive lead at the top of the league.

I'm not, but I do also believe that our position in the league should mean something when it comes to measuring our strength compared to the teams under us. We should have done better at home against PSG. 7th placed Villa managed it.
A Quansah goal from beating them?! You know how ridiculous that sounds?
So what if Villa strengthened during Jan?!
Why the fuck didn't we if it meant being better against in the cup final and against PSG?

We weren’t getting Isak or any of the other few top quality forwards in January. That’s why we didn’t strengthen.

7th placed Villa were down 5-1 and complacency crept into that young PSG side. No doubt.
PSG were always winning that game.

Well, its true isn't it? Quansah hit the post in the closing minutes. We were a few fine margins from going through to the next round over two legs against the current best side in Europe.

Hopefully you've been around this club long enough to know that if our targets aren't available we won't sign stop gaps in January.
Villa signed Malen (not good enough for us), Asensio (meh) both on loan and Rashford (as if we'd sign him). All improvements for them but not us.

I'd be happy if we signed someone on loan.
And for us to rely on a Quansah chance to beat PSG at home is not good enough.
Did you see the goals Villa managed to score against them?

Thats not the point though, ffs. It showed how close the tie was in the end. Fine margins.

Yeah, I saw them. All coming after being down 1-5 on aggregate. Its the kind of goals you don't score if complacency haven't crept in.

We all know we need a new 9. We've known that since the start of the season. But that player wasn't available in January.

I get the Villa point Stevie - you can see that by rotating they are able to make their forward line effective in different situations.

I had fun when a Villa mate said to me “Villa are now the only team on for a treble” until i pointed out that they could no longer mathematically win the league

Did make me think - Watkins is out of favour there. I’d take him in a heart beat. Wonder if anyone is keeping tabs.

Hard to know what that's down to. I certainly think Watkins is LFC standard but I'd want to know why the wheels have come off for him at Villa.
