Post Match shit

The things that our team and squad lack are pace, strength , height and aggression. You can teach players to be more tactically aware or formations and when to press or not but that's not going to make them faster , stronger , taller or more assertive.
Unfortunately not enough of our players are up to the task or the fight when it's required.

Haven't read the thread but here's my thoughts...

Awful match between two very ordinary sides.

We got absolutely nothing from Clattenburg...he even missed the blatant shove on the edge of our box just before they scored.

We created many more chances but here's the difference...every time they attacked us it was with crisp and pacy movement of the ball, while everytime we attacked them we looked like a battleship turning around. We just cannot create and sustain pressure playing this way.

Can is going to be a world class player. Klopp's new team has to be built around him.

I like Henderson and Lallana but they were lightweight and shit today.

I think the likes of Milner, Lallana etc are ok supplementing quality, they play some good football but collectively don't contribute enough in terms of goals and assists, but if you have quality around some of them, they're more than capable players.

Look at how Henderson benefited from the presence of Sturridge and Coutinho a couple of years ago, he got among the goals with his intelligent runs from midfield.

I don't think it's a case of "they can all go as far as I'm concerned", that sort of outlook is waaaay OTT, if you add a couple of big players to this squad, notably a quality defender, midfielder and attacker, then some of these lads will thrive with the pressure off them to weigh in. It's difficult to chip in when you don't have the quality around you to occupy defenders and to provide a genuine threat that the opposition have to concentrate on. When the onus is on you and you're not a big goalscorer, then you're likely to buckle. You're more likely to contribute when your team has a couple of guaranteed match winners. We're never going to have a team of match winners, you need a few players with real quality and the right tactics, so we're halfway there at least. United on the other hand have quite a few big potential matchwinners, but their attack is starved of oxygen by their nullifying tactics. That's a contrast worth thinking about, our style can make lesser players look crucial at times. Adding quality to that can only help Klopp realise his vision.

I'm as disappointed as anyone, but you have to be longterm-ist about this, we just don't have a couple of the necessary tools to push on yet, but it's not really constructive to say rip it all up and start again, we don't need to do that at all, we need a spine, which we have done since the days of Reina, Xabi, Torres, etc. I also think that Firmino is starting to show his quality, despite him not showing himself to be that regular a goalscorer yet, if you get a quick goalscorer alongside him, then I think he'll be excellent. And as said, Can is turning into some player.

We have no chance of 4th place now. Focus on the cups and let Klopp try out a few fringe players to figure out who he wants to work with next year. The league is done for this season but we could still win a couple of trophies and a CL spot

What makes this loss so hard to take is that this is probably the worst Utd team I've seen.
Shockingly poor but a World class GK

Spot on. Playing Milner AND Lallana was gutless. We should have played Benteke and Firmino at the same time. We should have owned this match.

That United team was the worst since the early 80s.

This was typical BR performance of old with a lot of shots from the distance and a few open chances but no real quality in front of goal. Not playing Benteke from at the very least halftime...Christ...

Klopp was right that there were 3 mistakes for the goal and that picture says a lot about our defending from set pieces.
First of all Ibe should have been switched on and not let Utd take the short corner so easily without any pressure. He can be a liability defensively.
Secondly we have 4 players competing with Fellaini for the ball but he still gets the header in. Surely if more than one of our players goes up with an opposition player who's good in the air then at least one of our players should be ingoring the ball and just try to block their player. If he can't get to the ball then he can't hurt us. It didn't look like we had any better a plan to deal with fellaini than we did last season and Klopp should take some responsibility for that. It's ok him moaning that we're susceptible at set pieces but the worrying thing is that we aren't getting any better at them.
Thirdly Lucas shouldn't have gotten involved with fellaini and stuck to marking Rooney. I thought Lucas played really well but that was a lapse in judgment.

Have Benteke and Firmino ever looked good together? Firmino has played his best football for us in lieu of Benteke.

Benteke should have been brought on earlier though.

4 players going for the same ball is crap but also look at Mignolet rooted to his line. He's got no appetite for controlling his area - gutless

It looked like Henderson was the blocker. He just didnt do a good job.

I might be wrong on that, but he needs a bollocking for his long range shooting anyway.

He is hopeless at controlling his area but i'm not sure he could have come for that cross and at the same time he must have thought that our 4 players onto one of theirs should have been enough.

Fellaini wanted the ball more than ours. He obviously has an advantage in height but it was his aggression that won him the header as much as anything else.

That pisses me right off.

People constantly criticise the way we defend corners (which is shambolic), but ignore the fact we have a keeper who doesn't take command of his area.

The very minimum a keeper should do is own that six yard box. Ideally they should own most of the area when a cross or corner is whipped in.

The best keeper's all do it. It takes all the pressure off the defenders & enables quick counters. Reina, De Gea, Schmeichel, Cech, all of those keeper's own their area.

You get results like this when you're not very good.

Look at us; we're pretty fucking average. No truly great players, a bad defence, a lot of same-y types in midfield, and not enough goal threat from any of the front 3 or 4. We don't play a discernible brand, we don't dominate teams, we don't look like we're all that resolute at the back.

There's no point in getting all worked up or flappy over this result cos the evidence is there every time we play. We're not very good.

The only thing Klopp conceivably got wrong I'd guess is taking the fucking job in the first place. I'd daresay he's asking himself that. Shit side, Steven Caulker on loan as the best January effort he can get, and a fabled atmosphere and crowd that haven't sung a song in about 10 years.

The crowd reflect the team; good years ago.

Well, that's cheered us all up.

Holy fucking shit this place is nuts. Overreactionary bollocks a lot of the time. When we lose, we're the worst Liverpool side ever and Klopp is regretting taking the job.
When we win a couple, fourth is nailed on and we are in with a chance of the league.
A fit Sturridge on the pitch today and we would have won that at a canter

Another League campaign fucked not long after the new year. Been alot of them in the last 10-15 years. We're done.

The atmosphere wasn't actually that bad. Felt a bit weird before the game as the crowd only really got going a few minutes before kickoff. As for the team, I agree. There's was some effort but ultimately the players just aren't good enough. It just felt like another shite team coming to Anfield with plenty of bodies behind the ball that we didn't have the quality to break down and we fell victim to yet another poorly defended set piece.

Both teams were a bit shite though and it was a bit of a grim affair. Best analogy of the game I read was by a Manc fan. " It looked like two heavyweights trying to make a comeback aged 50"

Looked at the goal again, and Lucas is culpable for why Rooney was free. Don't know why he felt the need to get involved in the aerial challenge when Henderson (Fellaini's man on their corners all day), Toure and Sakho were already going in for it. Rooney was his assignment, and he left Rooney alone to go in. After that he just stepped and leaned back and admired the shaking crossbar while Rooney got the rebound and smashed home.

Watch it here again if you'd like to torture yourself:

OH FUCKING SHIT THE BED.

I can't believe this shit but...

Don't you or anyone else have a go at Lucas today. Man of the match for me.

Oh god I need to send you this shit I'm doing

Haha ^^ This. Fuck sake. I think this season is a bit of a write off and yes we are a bit shit at the moment. Injuries, no proper pre-season and no proper Klopp transfer window have all contributed. We'll come good. Just takes a bit of time....

I must have watched a different game to many of you. We were ultimately not composed when we created our million odd chances, and yes their goalkeeper was very good and had a lot to do with it. Before the goal and after the goal - we were the better side, and this sort of result against them has never been uncommon even in games where we have dominated like today's. I just thought overall Lallana was the one that kept loosing the ball, but in terms of aggression and talent - I prefer our squad way above theirs. I can't find much fault in our performance or hardly any mistakes we made - you could tell that we tried and succeeded in restricting their chances to put crosses in. Shit happens , but today we can say that 4th is not in our reach any longer.

Bottom line is we missed strikers and I think the argument that Benteke should have been bought on earlier is valid - some of them were losing their focus even before the goal. But we should also consider the number of games we have had to play this month, given the injuries and limited options I think the Wednesday game took a lot out of the players.

We need a shit hot attacker who can offer pace and goals. So same situation we were in 100M ago. Great.

We're 9th in the league. Currently sitting behind Stoke, West Ham, and Crystal Palace. And we're over halfway through the year.

I'm not overreacting to today. I'm stating the obvious.

It's true, we're crap. If I didn't support us I'd turn the telly off if we were playing, there's no one worth watching anymore, even our very best players are second rate.

I watched the first half but then had to go on the Harry Potter Tour at Leavesden Studios (Christmas present)

Great Hall - 7/10
Diagon Alley 8/10
Butterbeer 1/10 (rank)
Props and sets 10/10
Make Up and Art Design 9/10
Model of Hogwarts 10/10
Hogwarts Express 10/10
Me spending £25 on a Chudley Cannons T-Shirt for my lad 2/10
Me checking the score on my phone 0/10

Overall tour experience 9/10 - Highly recommended. 🙂

What about the interactors?

@gene hughes - That's pretty true actually. I remember watching some kind of Scotland Vs England debate on the telly prior to a Euro's or World Cup. One of the phone in guys said (rather scathingly) 'Name one player ONE Scotland player that would get into the England team?' The Scottish pundit guy (I forget who it was) said 'John Collins' - I remember thinking. Fuck me that's a sorry state of affairs. John fucking Collins?!!!

Someone please tell we've not turned into Scotland - which one of our players would walk into Man City/Chelsea - Even fucking Utd!? I suppose Coutinho might but that's about it.
