I don't think a cult hero has to be not all that good. IMHO he can also be someone who was excellent but only played for us for a short while, e.g.Sir Gary Mac.

Agree that they can be actually good, but to be a cult hero, they can't be widely appreciated. Gary Mac was appreciated by all.

I think someone like Maxi Rodriquez fits it a little better.

I think Aidan's point is that Li'l Luis was more than just a cult figure and, if so, then TBH I'd tend to agree. For sure he was inconsistent, but he was a first team regular for a while and his best work was brilliant. I include in that his career-ending tackle on Roy Keane BTW. 😉
