Once again we see Modo using snide to make his point.

Why bring Alonso into it? He's signed an extension.

Why don't you actually say what you're thinking instead of these shabby little posts?

I'm guessing Modo, coz you're being cryptic. Why don't you just say that Alonso was boss in a game hundreds of miles away, while our three couldn't pass if their lives depended on it, on a shitty pitch against a team of thugs in Stoke, mid UK winter.

Forget Joe sideways, Xabi Sideways!

That's pretty much what I'm getting at.

A defensive midfielder doesn't have to play "Hollywood balls" all the time. He doesn't always have to turn defence into attack in an instance. It's mostly about being disciplined, staying in your position and playing it simple.

Alonso is the blueprint. A way to demonstrate how a defensive midfielder or playmaker is supposed to move the ball.
To me, it's an interesting comparison.

He may not have to be great at attack, but if all he can do is sit and defend, he's limited. I think Stevie's new role could be great for us. He'll read the game, defend and will pick out passes to help turn attack into defence pretty sharpish.

Alonso was like Spam in the 1980s. Good at the time, but ............. JUST FUCKING GET OVER IT!! He is last decades news.

I like the Hendo and Lucas maps, not taking too many risks in central and defensive areas. But more adventurous higher up and in wider positions. Gerard's misplaced passes all seem to be aimed to wide positions, and more than 20 yards long, suggesting it might have been a tight pitch with little gaps between defenders to try those Hollywood balls into. Which even David Blunkett knew after watching that.

Yep this Alonso daily love in tragic.
Not coming back either so who cares what he's doing.

I'm actually very impressed by Lucas map. Agenda aside, it surprises me that he managed to pass so well further up the pitch and in tighter areas than where he usually is.

Lucas vs Hull in his "regular" role. Very similar to Alonso isn't it? (but further down the pitch)

Gerrard should just go back to basics for a while, he loves the difficult pass but like you say he doesn't need to attempt that so frequently. The team would benefit far more from retaining the ball and moving it around with simpler passes.

Gerrard doesn't bother with the foreplay, he just sticks it in. Needs some Barry White to his game.

Funny you say that, was thinking about this earlier and posting but couldn't be arsed, Gerrard missed out Henderson a lot, passing (or trying to) to our front 3 straight away and missing the 2 midfielders in front of him out.

Also noticed Henderson played a few short backward/sideways passes to Gerrard almost looking for him to do that when he had other forward options, theres definately something in it with Henderson almost going into his shell when Gerrards next to him, probably Hendersons least effective performance for ages and it coincides with Gerrard coming back.

Interesting.
Yeah Hendo was a bit anonymous yesterday, I even forgot to rate him in that post you slated.
I hate to use the word detrimental and Gerrard in the same sentence but if he's affecting our general play in a negative way even he must realise that he shouldn't be playing or that he needs to step up.

I don't want to pick on Gerrard too much but it's maybe not a coincidence Henderson played worse beside him. Younger players have been known to be subdued when playing alongside big names only really emerging when the big name moves on, did Fabregas only really show his true colours when Vieira left? Could be the case.

Fàbregas made his first team debut at 16 and was a first team regular at 17, I'm fairly certain noone was holding him back.

Lol, you make me feel a bit bad now about the slating your post bit, i genuinely respect your opinion on here, noticed you as one of the better posters on here when i first joined, right after the match when your buzzing sometimes things can come across as a bit stronger than they are meant to be, sorry anyway, just tell me to wind my neck in next time.

A poster in the match thread just said trying to accomodate Gerrard is going to cost us any chance we have of winning the league and if we are brutally honest hes right and it will.

Henderson did seem take a 2nd row seat today, not what we want him doing, you are completely right that our DM or any DM doesn't need to be spraying 40/50 yard balls every other pass. play the percentages and build out from our half.

The experiment we tried today didn't work at all. We didn't look comfortable at any stage and were outplayed for considerable periods. Our best midfield performance this season was against Spurs and that should be the template/benchmark from now on.

It's amazing how much a pair of shit-hot strikers can cover up.

No worries. After rewatching the game I admit that I was a bit harsh/not harsh enough towards certain players.

Same here but the evidence is mounting up that we are better off without him in the midfield, said in another thread about seeing the light with regards to how our midfield functioned without him recently, they all flourished without him there and we looked a genuinely proper team.

Another thing I just noticed, is that our midfield barely created any chances (according to those maps).

Lucas created one chance it seems and that's it.
