Our midfield trio today

We all saw Gerrard play some ambitious passes that didn't come off, but it seems to obvious to me that he was playing to instructions.

If Mr Rodgers wanted a DM to keep things ticking with simple passes he would have just left Lucas there. His post match comments suggest that he was happy with the way Stevie played the role and he specifically spoke of the way Gerrards passing range allows us to switch the play quickly and find spaces.

We're moving away from attempting pure possession football and I reckon we will be seeing a fair many more 'hollywood' balls in the coming weeks from the captain, with the blessing of the manager.

I do think that we need an alternative when the opposition defense pushes up and we get squeezed in midfield, thus making it difficult for us to play our natural intricate passing game.
On these occasions a few longer ball into the spaces behind the defense for the likes of Sturridge and Sterling to chase onto, thus forcing opposition defenders to turn, could be enough to push the whole opposing team backwards, creating enough space in midfield for us to take contol and play our natural game

I think Lucas has been excellent of late.
He really looks to have matured and grown mentally and physically.

I thought he did well too, as did Mr. Rodgers.

I also think Lucas did well and haven't noticed anyone commenting on the times he tracked back to stop an attack by tackling cleanly from behind. He's obviously not as good going forward, but to see the advanced midfielder breaking up attacks like that gives me an indication of the gaffa's thinking, and it could work well once everyone settles into their roles. As long as we keep picking up 3 points while they find their feet, I am happy with the reshuffle.

Henderson wasn't great in possession yesterday, but he still did some very good work.

Lastly, Modo is by far the most improved poster on here over the past couple of years. Like KHL, whether you agree with his points or not, he gets discussion going here by making posts that are about football and have some thought put into them.

It would be nice if @mark1975 would stop the constant sniping and harassment and go back to talking footie like he used to before having 20 kids turned him into a grumpy old fucker.

I thought he was excellent again, but have given up on commentating on it on this site. It's not worth it.

I can definitely see the case for it, especially with the pace we have up front these days.

Yep, what Xabi used to do, good idea.
I'd like to see how that pans out.

See my comment about match threads @ Post

Same thing. Spend a few years talking about someone being a useless cunt who will never be good enough, and it becomes hard to admit it when they turn out to be very good indeed.

Yep indeed. This is exactly what I said in a post in another thread (Post Match ?). With the pace we have (isn't it great to be able to say that !) up front with Suarez, Sterling and Sturridge, and SG's long passing ability (well known by all other teams) it keeps the opposition on the back foot and playing deeper than they otherwise might, as well as giving us the chance to change defence into attack in the blink of an eye.

Lucas wasnt excellent but he was good. Apart from the two big away games he's been good. Usually until around the 70-75th minute.
Against quality opposition though he doesnt stand out but the game just passes him by.

This discussion is pointless though as the pro Lucas camp dont understand the arguments and its become an obsession to point out how good he is to everyone else.

I dont mind him as a squad player but not as a guaranteed starter. I dont think he'd good enough.

We won the game because our attacking prowess was significantly better than Stokes; both defences looked very shaky and that leaves us with the midfield.................

The 2 teams had identical line ups i.e. 4-5-1 with the 2 wide midfielders not under pressure to track back because there were 3 CM'ers holding the fort. Walters & Etherington got up in support of Crouch as much as possible as did Sterling and Coutinho.

This leaves the match up of Gerrard-Henderson-Lucas against Adam-Nzonzi-Whelan. That Stoke trio is average at best but still managed to dominate our three for large parts of the game and IMO that's not good enough. I would rate all three of LFC midfielders performances a 6/10 so I'm not directly blaming Lucas but without the god-like Suarez, the improving Sterling and the introduction of Sturridge the midfield trio's performance would be coming under a lot more criticism than it is now.

I thought Lucas was gash for a good couple of years.

That's cos he was.

Before his injury though he was outstanding, he played some incredible football.

This season he's been below par, but that's hardly a surprise given how (relatively) quickly he's come back from such a serious injury.

He's getting better game by game, whether he can successfully adapt to a one further up the pitch I'm unsure, I think if stevie has Lucas dm slot then Allen is a much better fit for that role as he's already capable of controlling games.

If stevie tailors his long range passing from dm, & plays more short balls, & you combine that with Allen being able to pass so accurately short & runners & we'll open up a completely different slant on attacking. Sterling, with that ten yard burst of pace will benefit, as will Sturridge, & I think, Henderson too.

is there a site out there with the footballing intelligence to understand your complicated explanation on why lucas is such a quality player ?

Pretty much agree with that. I used to think he was awful and would cringe seeing him on the pitch. Then he hit some incredible form but then had a serious injury. Hasn't been the same since and i don't think he will. Thought he was below par last season but justified that as him needing the season after a long injury. That excuse no longer holds water this season and just think he's average now. He's not shit but he's not world beater either, just a decent squad player. I would definitely keep him as backup but we need better.

*Imagines Ryan mixing chat in Style Forum on the return of polo necks with opining on Lucas's excellent positioning*

I've been wearing grandfather collared shirts for the last 30 years in the hope they'll one day comeback into fashion but have come to the realisation that they'll never comeback into fashion until uncool people like me stop wearing 'em.

Back on topic............Lucas = Meh, always has done (apart from THOSE 2 games, and everyone knows which 2 games I refer to) and always will be.
