Newcastle Post Match

Klopp picked the wrong team. He's been great so far, but he got it completely wrong today.

Lucas and Allen invite pressure as a partnership, as Allen ends up roaming while neither offer enough going forward, I was furious on about 92/93 minutes when Lucas played a 30 yard sideways pass in our half with acres of space to carry the ball into. Play one of them, yeah, but both? As I said in the match thread, there's a reason they are two of the most divisive players on our books, because they continuously fail to back up impressive performances.

The front line - horribly wrong again. What worked at City and Chelsea was a fluid attack that interchanged. At Newcastle, we had Ibe hugging the wing without any real end product or tactical point, just holding position. Same with Benteke, no great movement, no threat to get in behind and proving again that he has to have an attack around him that plays to his strengths, Firmino is too often a passenger too, so when you play him and Benteke together you're not getting much in terms of pace, craft or the ability to hound defenders.

Moreno was unlucky with his goal, but again, why is he diving in unnecessarily? He continues to frustrate defensively and provide hope offensively - he needs to cut out the silly, naive defending.

Skrtel was unlucky, I've never, ever been one to give it out to defenders who give away own goals, Carragher did it, John Terry has done it. There's only one reason it happens alot to those sort of players, it's because they throw their body in the line of fire time and time again. It happens.

Clyne was fucking dire, he's been a bit hit and miss for me overall. Good in many respects, mediocre in others.

Ibe is a good player and has the potential to be a really good one. Ran well with the ball today and was our only threat and outlet, but the end product was poor, mainly due to his decision making. Lallana should have been making those moves in he last third, not a barely just turned twenty year old playing alongside two really poor supporting players. Firmino and Benteke were woeful today and offered nothing other than a touch of comedy value when Benteke managed to sky a shot from three yards out.
Allen had plenty of engine but nothing else. Lucas was playing under Rogers again. Milner was just steady Eddie as usual.
Complete turn around for our defence though which now seem pretty solid. Dejan is quietly starting to do the simple things right, and although maybe not worth what we paid for him, is starting to behave like a half decent CB.
Klopp got it wrong, but blow me, the mid and front line did nothing to help him.
Frustrating to say the least as they were average at best and that game was there for the taking.

He said there were forced changes today.
We had no other option then Lucas and Allen seeing as its to early for Hendo.

He hopefully wont play Lucas and Allen together ever again. They both need replacing after this season aswell.

He often had the beating of the first defender. If that's not causing a defender a problem then I don't know what is.

Not getting on the ball enough is the worst fault for an attacker. Benteke and Firmino were guilty of that and they were passengers. Ibe wasn't.
You can't seriously be defending Ibe.
That was one of the most frustrating performances I've seen from a Liverpool player in a long time.
He had maybe 10 separate chances to make a decision. Any decision. And he fuck every. single. one of them up. Every single one.
It's a little different when you are looking at the field of play from the TV camera angle - I get it. But he was playing like fucking Stevie Wonder out there today.

Defeats on klopp, awful decision to leave out studge/orgi after they scored 5.

Bentake missing a half chance didn't help
Half chance ? He was 2 metres out - he could have swung his cock at it and it would have gone in ! In fact that's what he should have done and we'd have won the match.

I don't understand why everyone gets so animated about a result like today.

We've a squad full of marginal talent and half fit players that need to be held back every now and again.

Results like this happen.
Possibly because this would have put us back in contention? Losses are always going to happen even to the best teams. Frustrating result because of the timing / opposition.

Ha, and I thought Clyne was one of the better players. Opinions eh.

I think we really missed Can. He's been much more influential these last few weeks then people give him credit for. And without Coutinho we missed Lallana.
Firmino likes to be the one making the runs but we had no one to pick out a pass at all.

Early days though. Klopp will have some of these were things arent working.

Contention for what? Are people still on about us winning the league?
Or are we talking top four?
Because the league ain't gonna happen this season.

Good players get on the ball. Good players don't allow the game to pass them by. The minimum for good players is that they try to affect the game.

Ibe wasn't great but he tried to make things happen. He didn't succeed today but at least he tried. Benteke and Firmino didn't and were passengers.
Yeah this is how I feel about Ibe's performance too. He had the beating of them all day but whether it was a cut-back or a cross or a shot, it just didn't happen. He's not the only one of course .. every single player who attacked did the same. Poor decision making, poor shooting, poor passing, poor corners.

I get the frustration of a player undoing all his good work with a sloppy pass, a poor cross or a bad decision. I get that.

But at least with Ibe, you can say there was some good work. You can't say that about Benteke or Firmino. The pair were passengers today and deserve the biggest kicking.

So in general - poor 😉

We should just close this thread and look forward to the next game.

One thing that was noticeable was that as soon as Milner (who had had a really shite day up until that point) dropped back (last 15 mins I think), and sat in front of the CBs (or mainly Skrtel to be accurate), we started to pressure them and hold the ball much better in their half. This was due to the accuracy of Milner's passing, which suddenly improved now that generally longer passes, and not short tippy tappy stuff, was required. If Lucas wasn't already a passenger he was from that moment ... it was like playing with 10 men.

We really really need a player that can control the midfield as the DB/Playmaker.

Ibe doesn't deserve the shit he's getting here, there were hardly any runs from Benteke or Firmino for him to pass to! The lack of movement compared to the Southampton game was amazing. Hard to remember a more static lump than Big Ben in this game, and how he missed from 2 fucking yards out christ only knows

Yeah Hansern, you win some you lose some. Just a timely reminder that some players are either not quite there yet or, as most of us know, aren't good enough or consistent enough..

We didnt cross once to Benteke though or give him anything to work with. In his defence.
He was still poor though

Because the league ain't gonna happen this season.

We were a few days a go 6 points behind the leaders - and as those above us are inconsistent and yet to play us at home - we have a great chance of doing something and challenging this season. If as LFC we don't think we can challenge when we were 6 points behind the top team, with half the season still to go then there is something wrong with us.

You see many players like Ibe that can beat his man but offers almost nothing else. If you don't have the brain to use what you are good at then you have a big problem. I doubt that Ibe will ever be a fantastic player because of his very poor decision making.

What makes a great player great is that he know what to do with the ball. You know that he will almost always make the right decision.

He is young and will learn this. The good thing is - he is a danger and puts the opposition on the back foot when he goes forward. I am not willing to give up on him at this stage - just way too early.

His decision making was perfectly good on Wednesday.

Only two changes needed to be made from the game in midweek, You know the team that scored 6 away from home..

Milner for Can

Clyne for Randall

Benteke is at best an option from the bench.. The great big lump..

This one is on Klopp got it so wrong tactically..
