That was kinda my prob giving Gerrard the captaincy back when. He wasn't broken so why try and fix things?

We ended up with Roy of the Rovers standing over every free kick and corner, more like a Sunday league captain. Centre halves always seem to make more sense to me.

I think that's being a little selective.
For a long while Murphey took a ton of free kicks and corners, as well as all penalties when he was on the pitch.
I'd say he started taking most free kicks, corners and penalties once Murphey was gone and Rafa came in.
And you can bet the analness of Rafa would have dictated who exactly he'll have wanted taking charge of any deadball situations, the penalty kick by Alonso in Istanbul being a prime example.

Could be true, though he's taken the responsibility of being our only goal scorer with aplomb this season.

I Might have changed my mind in the couple of weeks since I wrote that actually JM, with some minor changes he might be able to do it, I am thinking of Sterling and how he seems to look after him.
I also have to say despite the attacks on his honesty on the pitch, I think he is a man of some principle, he could have just denied the whole Evra thing, he could have just shaken the hand etc.
