How's the reserve league set up nowadays?

I dont think there enough games for the development of the reserves.

If it was up to me I would divide the 20 teams into 2 leagues (Reserve League North and Reserve League South) to minimise travelling and costs and have the teams play each other 3 times. They can alternate the 3rd game i.e. Liverpool vs Man United 2 at Liverpool one in Man U and reverse it the next season.

Basically each team will play 27 games between the months of Sept to Apr and will play at least one game a week.

That would certainly be better. There's already a north-south divide, but it's amazing that, although it's sponsored like the Premier league and it purports to be a professionally run set-up, it's completely shambolic at present. McMahon has shown a bit of initiative in signing us up for whatever else is around and arranging some extra trips, but it's farcical he needs to. We're taking the Lancashire Senior Cup more seriously, too, but apart from that there's not much competitive football available. It's a bit surprising that all of this goes more or less under the radar, seeing as there's always plenty of tub-thumping about bringing on new talent.

Was the reserve league like this before the advent of the Premier League? Or has it always been this shambolic? I read somewhere too that Spurs doesn't even have a reserve team!

Oh, and to add on to my proposal, I would actually scrap the playing against each other 3 times idea and have the North league teams play the South league teams once. All the teams will still play 27 league games in the season though.

Like Rafa says, they should be allowed to enter the pro leagues with a cap on how far they can progress.

Unless the Wigan game gets rescheduled soon (and Aquilani was set to play all of that game) there won't be another official reserve game until, I think, the third week in January 2010! The old reserve set-up used to be much better, although if anything they played TOO often, but at least it meant reserve players made the transition to the first team when they were very sharp, strong and fully-used to the system. Now they're just reduced to endless training sessions and the odd match against two or three strong teams and some mediocre ones. I think Trevor Brooking is the only one who speaks out about the problem, but he's been pretty much ostracised by the FA grandees because they don't want to know!

We were playing every game we could under whasshisface last year as well, so I wouldn't really attribute that to McMahon showing initiative (unless he's doing something else in particular?).

I remember the commentators saying that City have two teams in their reserve setup and are signed up to two leagues, so it's clear that it's not just Liverpool that see the lack of games as a major issue.

The fact that it remains as it is with every man and his dog whinging about the state of youth in England only serves to underline the unforgivable ineptitude of those in charge.

If he was the brain behind moving Pacheco to midfield, then he deserves a raise for that alone. I have just gotten around to watching some reserve game highlights. In terms of end product, Pacheco looks twice the player when played further away from goal.

Actually it's quite common to stick "lazy" players in CM where they don't get a chance to rest on their laurels.
