We´ll probably play these guys in the middle until Aquilani is ready...and I don´t like it at all. Does anyone have the stats (wins/draws/losses) from last season for the games Mascherano and Lucas started? Could be a interesting read.

Don't know the stats, but they both played against United at OT.

People make a point about the Everton cup game, but we were playing shite at that point anyway as a team, it wasn't long after that we clicked big time. If we'd have played Everton a month later we'd have twatted them.

That fucking replay put Stevie out for a few games and we already smack bang in the middle of a bad run.

I reckon Aurelio could get some game time at CM this season.

Didn't Rafa say he doubted he'd be playing there again? He did well initially and then in the second half they just kept playing him onto his right foot and that was the end of that.

It's not unreasonable to expect both Lucas and Masher to have improved from this time last year.

Let's see how they do on sunday before waving the white flag. I'm hopeful Lucas will step up and that Masher will be on top form.

Lucas looks a changed player to me, from the little I've seen of him in preseason. I think they'll be fine in terms of winning the ball and protecting the back four. The larger question is their distribution going forward. But if it doesn't work out, we can always put Stevie back there.

Yeah if there are problems then it might have a massive impact on Kuyt and Riera, and in turn Torres and Stevie. Alonso thrived last season at times on having someone like Riera to play balls outwide to, if the widemen aren't getting the same service, how much of an impact could it have on their contribution?

Our wide men will simply have to become more dynamic with their movement, because they won't be getting perfect, space finding passes this year. Kuyt will be fine, his movement is one his greatest features and always seems to find space between the lines - it's Riera I'm most concerned about. He'll have to do a lot more than "bring balance" this year.

I watched Jimmy Bullard and Danny Murphy absolutely fucking destroy Lucas and Mascherano last November. They were first to every ball. They then also started together against West Ham in another scoreless draw the following league game.

Lucas is a better central midfielder than Aurelio.

Oh yeah, I agree.

Just think Rafa may use him there in cups games, etc.

Welcome back.

Now that is bollocks.

[/quote] be great though if he found some shooting boots

i'm pleased he seems to have found passing boots.

looking back lucas had a good game on saturday. my issue with this partnership is that even at their best these 2 will not be able to control the tempo of the game.

They are not suited against the teams we struggled against last season...the teams that defended deep. We need a plan b against those teams because we lack plan b players (as it right now anyway).

Why not? He's already got the passing shit sorted.

And Lucas as he did last year will outscore what Alonso got from open play.

40 seconds in.

He was good in pre-season, which is why there is some hope this season.

But to bank on him coming good on the grounds of a good-preseason against mainly rubbish teams is a mistake.

We should sell Lucas and Mascherano, and buy Danny Murphy and Jimmy Bullard.

Did either Gerrard or Torres play?

Agreed! 😉

I hated this season from the beginning (because of Lucas/Mascherano...and because we didn´t sign a striker) and it´s already time (almost anyway) to get that "next season-feeling".

Please win on Sunday!

this is what I don't get; 'we beat *insert top 4 team*' with masher and lucas', so fucking WHAT

beat manu - 3 points
beat p'mouth - 3 points

one game in isolation means next to fuck all, it's about consistancy. the question is do masher and lucas CONSISTANTLY dominate the midfield? without a shadow of a doubt the center of midfield is the most important area of the pitch, they shield the defenders, fill in the gaps of the overlapping fullbacks and give the attackers the ball. torres is world class but he is going to do fuck all without the ball.

frankly I am getting tired of seeing the gaps behind the fullbacks, the defenders over run and the attacking players dropping deeper and deeper if they want a sniff of the ball. right now I don't see the point of either they are not competantly doing what they are supposed do and every single other aspect of our play is suffering as a result.

the winning goal for lyon was fucking taking the PISS, we have two holding midfielders TWO FFS where the fuck were they?

I think that's proven over time to be right, neither offer enough going forward. Just like when Gerrard and Alonso played together, they left holes all over the place, well this is the reverse, we're seeing how damaging it is.

There's no link between midfield and attack, it's Lucas and Mascherano sat infront of the defence with neither the quality nor the vision to break out of there to link up with the more advanced players. There's a gaping hole in the middle of the pitch and the fact they're sat so deep is just inviting pressure.

This pairing has cost us dear this season, there's no two ways about it.

you know what I don't get mark, how opposition attacks happen so easily. the mere fact there are two bodies there shoud snuff it out. if I were an opposition manager going to a top team my tactic would be to flood the midfield make it as congested as possible and make it really difficult for the top team to string passes togother. well mash and lucas are a constant prescence in the middle of the park (due to them sitting so deep) yet the opposition still pass for fun, still attack for fun and there are STILL gaps around the pitch. seriously, it's like they aren't even there.
