Who honestly thought Broughton was a Chelsea plant? Really? I stated myself that it would make his position untenable should Torres join Chelsea on his watch.
My issue all along has been this: I don't think Old Uncle Roy is anything other than mediocre, and I don't know (or trust) the people who decided to appoint him, or indeed why they appointed him.
It wasn't to win trophies
And while it was always likely that Masher would leave and Gerrard would stay, he doesn't seem capable of swinging an undecided player.
As for asset-stripping, well, I think one of the more accurate terms is 'expectation'
Benitez would have been demanding cash and control, Roy will get neither, and I don't think our spend will be positive this summer either.
If Torres stays great. But let's not pretend the situation is still anything but dire financially

Brendan, obviously all of that is true, but given the shit financial situation, isn't it actually correct for Broughton, Purslow etc. to make decisions based in that operational reality? It doesn't make them evil or suspicious, it means they are working within the parameters they are given.
Their principal objective DOESN'T involve winning trophies, and nor should it this year. If we don't have any new investment, a trophy would be a fantastic bonus, but the real result would be coming fourth.
They were looking for stability, and someone that would accept a sad financial reality, and work best within that circumstance. The person who works best in that circumstance isn't necessarily the best manager in general, but they may achieve the most in a bad situation.
It doesn't mean Hodgson is a stupid yes man either. He knows he wouldn't be in this circumstance normally, but who cares, it's an opportunity for him. He may think, if I can do a good job this year, once the ownership takes place, I'll have a position, more authority, and the money to spend. People take compromised jobs due to gambling on future growth all the time. It can be a quite clever move, if results are achieved.
