There's no way that Eto'o is going to join us. And even less in a part exchange deal.

The depressing monotone voice of reason.

The problem is how we're going to replace Mascherano when he goes.

There are not many holding midfielders of his calibre around these days.

Parker may be a short term solution as he's 30 years old in a few weeks. Hardly one for the future. But is experienced, knows the league, can do a job for us.

Another option is Lee Cattermole. At 22 he is significantly younger than Parker and could be one for the future. The problem is can he do a job for us on the short term? Relying on a younger player who only played for lesser clubs until now could prove a gamble. And I doubt we are in a position to gamble.

What other solutions are there?

Felipe Melo? I doubt Juventus would sell.
Bastian Schweinsteiger? Bayern definitely won't sell.

It would be best for us if nobody would come up with a decent offer for Mascherano and he'd stay for another year.

What, like Masch? Curbishley thought Hayden Mullins was better than him.

Mascherano played for River Plate and Corinthinas before he joined West Ham in a dubious deal 2007. Hardly small clubs in South America. Moreover he already was a regular in Argentina's WC campaign 2006.

No, not like Masch.

I'm actually a bit frustrated.

If it were always clear that he'd be giving us one more year and that's it, we should have been more motivated to sell him much much earlier.

As it stands now, any potential transfer is going to resemble Owen's instead of Xabi's.

The one more year is only now applicable because Rafa got the boot. If Rafa stayed, he would have signed the new contract.

What. The. Fuck.

Owen was a £20m+ player, who ended up going for 8m.

Mascher is a £25-30m player who will gor for £20-25m.

Is he going to go for less than half of what hes worth? No.

What are you fucking blithering about?

Perhaps he's talking about how the negotiations with Madrid over the ransfer of Alonso took a while, and by the time it had finally been agreed, we rushed out and bought a spaz because it was getting rather close to the start of our season.

Do we really need another holding midfielder though? Who purely defends the back four and only sits infront of them?

It really depens on how Roy will play doesn't it, if we're going to play 4-4-2 then I'd rather get a midfielder that offers something going forward aswell.

Parker
Khedira
Cambiasso (though I doubt that will happen)
Sissoko (from Toulouse not the other one...)
Defour

The two events being related because.....theyre both football transfers? I dont see too much of a link beyond that.

Alonso's protracted transfer took so long because i) the player did not feel he should have to put in a transfer request after being hawked round Europe for over 12mths ii) Real Madrids valuation being heavily aligned to the fee we were trying to secure less than a year before. Both things took time to resolve.

In this case - Mascher has stated he wants to go, Roy wants the money, Inter have the money, Benitez wants him. Unless Barca remortgage Messi's short and curlies and come in with a bid, the deal will get done pretty promptly.

Realistic and attractive - Parker or Defour.

Wouldn't mind Cattermole, but is he becoming injury prone, and is he simply a poor mans Mascherano?

Sky Sports News had some stats up before that showed we had a better win % without Masch and lost less games when he didn't play.

Nicked this from another site, thats quite interesting.

[/quote]Oh dear. Is there anything you wouldn't try to spin positively?
Mascherano played in all our toughest games. When he didn't play we were playing against bottom half dross. It's hardly a suprising stat.

Exactly, and he made the difference in those big games more than once. The other top teams will be chuffed to monkeys if/when he goes.

Mascher is a monster player and he will be sorely missed. However, we cant put another player straight into that position, but will have to adjust our game to what personell we have.

Honestly I think we missed Xabi more than we will miss Mascher.

Whether we went and bought a spaz after we sold Alonso will be more clear this season, but Aquilani wasn't a panic buy. Rafa had been tracking him for ages and thought he was the best in his position, otherwise he'd have gone for Sneijder.

Anyways, some Italian dude just posted that reports over there say the deal is 30m plus Muntari - which values Muntari at minus 5 million.

Isnt he meant to be a bit mad?

Yeah I did; but other than that he didn't do much.

Also, even if we get him we will still have to get a more defensive minded midfielder. I think Muntari is more attacking than defensive.
