I went from competing to studying Human Movement etc and becoming a fitness instructor.
Since then I've kind of enjoyed comparing the different aspects which contribute to a good athlete on a football field. In particular I like the ways you can change one body type into another.
In terms of Markovic it's just my assessment on him after a few runs so he might be more rhythm than I'm giving him credit for. The thing about a power runner is that body mechanics actually work against them at some point. They did an experiment at one point with Carl Lewis and three other US sprinters by lining them up with the US Olympic light middleweight weightlifting team. There was a lot of boring detail in it but it helped prepare a lot of technique training to prevent body mechanics working against power runners. Usaine Bolt is actually one of the products of this training - a power runner with too much height to be a sprinter but they worked on new techniques to help counteract that.
For a standard power runner, the further you run the more your body mechanics work against the power so where your power gave you good acceleration it will quickly become exhausted as it fights against the technique. The result is the athlete loses form, body control, agility and speed. When Ben Johnson first started running he could only compete in 60 metre events - he was too exhausted to go further. Using steroids helped him overcome that problem and allowed him to compete over longer distances.
When Markovic tried to go past Varane he was already losing form and had no capacity to change pace, direction let alone control a ball while doing it.
I think that's gone all over the place and I can't really explain it properly in a post but that was just what I noticed when watching him play - particularly against Madrid.
