What a strange performance from Coutinho. I thought he was utter cack for 44 minutes in the first half, he gave the ball away in dangerous positions several times inc the lead up to the pen and was generally sloppy, then seemed to flick a switch into brilliant mode from the goal onwards. It was a truly Jeckle and Hyde performance.

I thought our squad was padded out with overpaid players that would be difficult to offload but Utd have got real problems, they really do look shit and it is going to be very costly putting recent transfers right, happy days!

Yeah. A gross exaggeration on my behalf but certainly for a 20 year old he's made an excellent start and certainly looks every inch a very good PL striker. I'm not sure what more could be expected of him considering his career to date - of course the fee paid was ridiculous but we of all clubs know that the price paid doesn't indicate exactly how good a player is.
I reckon he'll be at psg next year of United don't get Europe

Even our worst players contribute more than some of Uniteds. They're in a very concerning position that requires near enough a new starting xi

Lol

Exactly the reason I thought Holle's comments in the match thread were gratuitous and WOTT (wanting him replaced at HT - said before he scored). In fact more than 50% of people on this thread ended up with him in their Top 3 in the MoM thread. He's a capricious player who can turn a game on it's head even when playing shite .. and that's exactly what he did, as we went from being under the cosh to coasting home.

We were poor, but they're much worse.

Disappointing really, I thought we were gonna fuck them. I wanted them all booing and kicking off.

Need to get ahead of them in the table now, I can't believe we're not already. Worst man u side for decades.

I didn't think we were that bad, it was frustrating and concerning how profligate we were but that is getting to be par for the course. We really should have put 3 or 4 past them.

Martial has been one of the best (top 5?) strikers in the league since his arrival*. He's clearly talented and clearly a danger in every match. Sakho nullified him, especially there was one very memorable, brilliant, tackle in the box.

*Exaggeration clarified below !

Martial operates out wide mainly. Fellaini got into the box more often than him.

Sakho struggles against strong, physical strikers who gets in his face all the time.

I've said something like this last week - all our current CBs have had so many ups and downs in the last 2 or 3 seasons, I'm not ready to trust them unless they show that they can put together good games for months rather than weeks. A great game here, a short spell of 3 or 4 clean sheets - that isn't enough to convince me of their improved consistency and quality, not after what they've shown in the past.

I'll give credit where it's due on a per-game basis - and Toure, Lovren as well as Sakho have deserved compliments in the last few games - but I'm not going to get my hopes high yet on any of them being good enough to start regularly for us next season. Not until they put together this level of performance in all our games until the end of the season. Then I might allow myself to reconsider. If I'm being harsh, then good - I hope Klopp is even more demanding on them.

A good contrasting example would be Clyne - he's been consistently sound defensively the whole season and had a bad game last night - everyone was quick to point out that he was awful at Old Trafford, but nobody doubts his defensive quality because he's earned the stripes with his work this season. That should be the standard level for our CBs - have the odd poor days pointed out rather than the odd outstanding days highlighted.

I think you have to factor in all the injuries we have had at cb, there hasn't been a settled partnership all season really. Is it any coincidence Sakho has his best game this season when the execrable Moreno is out injured ? For me he is the weakest link, cannot wait for Gomez to come back in.

Unfortunately I think Martial is going to be a very good player, hes still young and fairly raw but you can see hes got everything to be a top player. Hes quick, strong works hard, hes got a great change of pace, plays across the front 3 and importantly he never hides. How long he hangs around I dont know but then considering what they paid for him, who is going to make them an offer anywhere near the 40 million they have paid for him. Although recent leaks suggest there are some eye watering clauses bonus payments in that deal so Utd may decide to move him on before those are triggered if a decent offer comes in.

That's a really good post.

Give it a rest, won't you.

I stand by it - he was shite before the goal. Pure shite. And I'd still want him subbed.

But the goal helped him to lift his game and he was better in the second half.

So what? The way you see it no manager should ever sub a player because he might score or whatever.

But keep it up and spout your shite around. Of course all in hindsight.

Well of course it was in hindsight as I saw your post at HT .... I was watching the match you dolt !

That said I'd never have suggested bringing him off, or even considered it ..... I'm not that short-sighted or impatient. If a player is struggling that is one thing and most managers would still give the player time, if a system is wrong then I can see there would be a need to restructure that might involve a substitution but we were still creating chances, good ones. Check the match thread on RedCafe .. even that lot could see we were dangerous and thought we'd score sooner or later. It was interesting that the BBC (or whoever it was that was showing the match on my feed) showed 4 highlights at HT; their penalty, Coutinho's goal and two other of our near misses.

Your reaction to Coutinho's indifferent first half, until the goal, was typical of the modern day, impatient, fan. You simply don't sub off one of your best players, one of our most creative, and an obvious goal threat, after whatever it was you spouted that shite, about 30 mins or whatever. To say nothing of the fact it would have meant restructuring the formation, which didn't need to be altered.

This is quite aside from you reacting in a sullen, petulant and aggressive manner to a simple ... LoL. Caught with your pants down but still shouting your mouth off. Most people would have just put their hand up and said 'fair dos', not you.

Well, I think we all enjoyed that. The game itself was quite weird. United played far better and were more aggressive than the first leg, but while we all expected that, we didn't really cope with it very well in the opening 40 minutes, with United on top and our team looking very nervous and making silly mistakes. That said, we still probably created more chances. Coutinho's magical goal changed that, though. A lot of the fight and all the belief simply evaporated from United and their fans, not helped by LVG's strange substitutions. We really should have scored two or three more, and an aggregate score of 5 or 6-1 would not have been overly flattering.

Really odd that the game actually finished as a draw, because it did feel like a win.

Mignolet (7) One great save from his own error, and the occasional poor clearance, but overall pretty solid and got rid quicker, rather than fannying about.

Clyne (4) Had a great first leg, and a poor second. Martial is a quick, talented player, but Clyne should have dealt with him better. Several clumsy challenges and gave away the penalty in a nervy, error-strewn display. Strange, given his overall very high level of consistency this season.

Lovren (8) Composed, no-frills display from the Croat, who was strong in the tackle, won lots of headers and passed it well.

Sakho (9) The enigmatic Sakho can generate nervous excitement with or without the ball, and last night was no exception. But he actually didn't really put a foot wrong. He made several thunderous tackles and interceptions, cleared everything that came his way, and also passed with superb accuracy. One of his finest games at Liverpool.

Milner (7) Started a little shakily, but improved and put in his usual shift of tireless industry, versatility and economy. A very valuable player for any team.

Henderson (6) Usual running power and some crisp passing, but his finishing remains woeful and he still struggles to really stamp his authority onto a game.

Can (8) Another great physical battle with Fellaini, but he also has a lovely touch, nice range of passing and pleasing flashes of inspiration (that back heel). Looking very impressive indeed.

Coutinho (8) The diminutive Brazilian playmaker showed his most frustrating, beguiling and beautiful aspects in this game. So sloppy at times in the first half, he then almost ended Varela's career at United with a turn and run, and then chipped the sprawling De Gea for the goal that killed the tie. He created several opportunities for himself and others, and tormented United in the second half. Some of his vision and weighted passes were eye-wateringly good.

Lallana (6) Not his greatest night and at times he was anonymous. Didn't do enough to hurt United, although his work rate was, as ever, impressive. Made most of his contributions by holding onto the ball too long and eventually getting fouled.

Firmino (6). Another whose fine recent form dipped a little, but like Lallana, his industry was always a bonus, even if some of his passing was wasteful.

Sturridge (5) A lacklustre, mediocre display. Hit the bar with one vicious effort, but too wasteful and didn't look anything like as dangerous as he should. Rightly subbed.

Subs:

Origi (6) Seems to be Klopp's "go to guy" when he needs someone to run around and tire out a leggy defence, but I'm not sure if he'd be the right choice if he had to come on and actually score a goal.

It's not that odd when you look how they played, they basically left their back four completely isolated and pushed everyone as far forward as possible, which allowed them to put us under great pressure in and around our box, but as soon as we got the ball we could easily hurt them, the space between their midfield and defence was colossal.

Sorry, I couldn't be arsed to read this.

But I guess it screams of smartarsery and maybe the odd insult.

Well done, champ.

That's a fairly accurate guess

Me and you are some of these microwave sky generation football fans

We should all have the patience for sub par performances

I mean, I know they're both cunts like, but still

I was just about to post something similar. I have three brothers and two of them are massive cunts and the nice one is an aggressive lunatic when fucked up.

That said, one happily tagged me and his supposed best friend on social media as 'two of the absolute worst people I know' so it's pretty mutual.

Mind you, I'm the eldest, so that makes me Top Cunt by default
