Man Utd 1 - 1 Liverpool (1-3 agg) - Post Match

Glorious stuff albeit after a very alarming sloppy and lacklustre 1st half up until Coutinho's moment of magic. We were a bit of a mess at times.

Sakho had a fine game, I still can't work him out and he'll need to do it more consistently to be 100% relied upon but he was flawless tonight. Saved us several times. Lovren recovered very well after a shaky 25-30 mins.

Emre Can is fast becoming a rolls royce of a midfielder as well. Really impressive of late.

Despite the positive result, I thought this match highlighted a recurring problem in our squad – most of our attacking players are "soft," they look good when teams let them play but they fail to deliver time and time again in physical, intense games such as today (or against teams normally playing high-intensity style, like West Ham).

Physicality and fight should not be thought of as the opposite of technique – the best teams have plenty of both in attack. Messi is not "soft", neither is Suarez, nor are Ronaldo, Lewandowski, Mueller, Neymar, etc. I've followed Borussia for years and let me tell you, Klopp doesn't like "soft" players in attack or elsewhere. I thought Klopp completely outplayed Van Gaal tactically once again today; our forward line had so much space and so many chances to make it count – Borussia of Klopp's best years would have scored 4 goals, not 1.

I think Coutinho is probably the best fighter out of this bunch. Firmino is generally a hard-working player, but he is not consistent in his application – he gets stuck in in some games and strolls around in others. Lallana is very willing to work hard, but he has 3 major flaws in poor upper-body strength (so can't hold up the ball and loses most of the 50/50 challenges), doesn't pass the ball quickly, and has average pace. Sturridge was the worst of the bunch today – completely wrong attitude for a game like this and didn't show enough quality to justify putting up with his antics. Some of United's most dangerous moments came when Coutinho, Sturridge or Lallana gave up possession by losing a 50/50 challenge in a dangerous area.

So yeah, it feels great to put United out of the Europa league, but this team still needs a lot of work. The spine is starting to settle down with Sakho/Lovren (+Matip next year) and Can so excellent at DM, but we need more quality, pace and fight up front.

I was proper shitting it when they scored though. I was hoping to get to half time at 1 nil then Coutinho scored that wonder goal.

I fucking love Adam lallana . he's my fav .

Coutinho put in a decent shift , Firmino chased the ball alot but was too deep to be effective at times .

Can , has shown Henderson up massively in recent weeks , he is superior in every aspect and I'd be inclined to give him the Armband over Henderson as he appears a better leader too.

Lovren is getting better by the week and the general CB form means who goes this summer could be interesting .

Studge bar the free kick offered little and I wish people would fuck off with this oh he managed 60 minutes he can't be unhappy , that's fine one game back from injury but not now it isn't and well, if those comments accurately describe his fitness/ health then he clearly isn't what we need going forwards

Apart from the last 15 to 20 minutes we were shit. Clyne was woeful. Sakho was a beast. We knocked Utd out on their own turf. Happy days.

According to Van Gaal, they played at least as well as we had in the first leg and the only difference was the away goal. He also blamed the weekend game and thanked the fans for recognizing how well his team played tonight.

Yeah same here. My heart rate couldn't settle the whole game and it was going like 95 beats a minute for the first half. Then when Coutinho put the ball in, I paused for almost a second before I realized that he had scored. It was outrageous in its simplicity and total disrespect for De Gea's reputation and ability, and it was glorious and soul-destroying for the Mancs. A proper Fellaini-style cheap elbow in their nuts. Loved it.

DeGea made a bollox of it though. He guessed Coutinho would square it and went too early leaving a massive gap on the near post which Coutinho duly exploited. If you see the goal from behind its clear his body position is all wrong. When the ball goes past him DeGea is pretty much side on to Coutinho making his frame as small as possible, the opposite of what any keeper is taught to do. Genuinely Mignolet level goalkeeping.

Yep, Coutinho properly mugged him off. De Gea was trying to be too clever and preempt Phil, and made a total hash of it, it's about time we got some change from him.

Yeah i fucking hate their goalkeeper - gets in the way too much and is the main reason we have lost to them so many times under ghal.

In total, he made ten clearances in 90 minutes for his side - the rest of the team 11 between them - and also had the highest pass completion rate of 89.4% from the starting side.

Really a perfect performance from Sakho. Worst defender in the league, huh?

He was very good but let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Manure didn't have a striker.

Since Klopp arrived Lovren, Toure and even Lucas have been better than him overall.

Martial has been one of the best (top 5?) strikers in the league since his arrival*. He's clearly talented and clearly a danger in every match. Sakho nullified him, especially there was one very memorable, brilliant, tackle in the box.

*Exaggeration clarified below !

Wouldn't go that far

He's talented, but so far he's been nowhere near the striker people expected.

To be fair, Martial attacked mostly from Lovren's side and was hardly "nullified." But Sakho made Rashford and Lingaard look very much like kids. I agree that it's too early to put him on a pedestal – let's see how he handles Harry Kane or Aguero.

Actually Sakho spent a fair bit of time over on 'Lovren's Side', I'm not sure how that happened but it was noticeable.

Yeah. A gross exaggeration on my behalf but certainly for a 20 year old he's made an excellent start and certainly looks every inch a very good PL striker. I'm not sure what more could be expected of him considering his career to date - of course the fee paid was ridiculous but we of all clubs know that the price paid doesn't indicate exactly how good a player is.
