He could done better for their goal with a poor clearance but I thought Skrtel's performance yesterday went a bit unnoticed. He was in full on fucking beast mode...always in the right place at the right time. And what a volley. He was excellent.
Man of the Match for me.

He wasn't unnoticed, imo Firmino and Coutinho were just slightly better.
Coutinho would have had at least 3 assists if Firmino scored from the clearcut chances he provided him with.
I've been checking ratings on other forums and newspapers and Coutinho was MOM in the majority of them.

I'm liking the fact that he's bringing on defenders at the end of the game to close the game.
It's an old school tactic that I haven't seen us use for a long time.

Happy Graham.

Has Graham had a tough paper round?

You're about 34, aren't you? That lad looks a lot older.

I am 34. That's some achievement remembering that, I only know cos I asked Bex last week (seriously, I couldn't remember if I was 34 or 35!).

He has a lot more money for drink & drugs than I do.

I remembered it because I'm about the same age. Well, I'm a little bit older, but not by much. Plus I can remember my own age!

It's ridiculous that I can't. My age is in sync with the year, so end of 2015 I'm 35. How the fuck I manage to forget by July every year I have no fucking idea, but the last few years I have done. I clearly have memory issues, I bought some gingko something or other tablets to take but, ironically, I keep forgetting to take them.

You also seem to be struggling to remember the name. If you could just remember what they're called and to take them then you'd probably remember what they're called and that you need to take them.

Ha! My ma done the same, she bought vitamin e as she heard it stops the onset of Alzheimer's and she forgot to take them.

This is the kind of rollercoaster emotional response we need.

I actually got that texted to me twice last night.

Eight points from the top & the 'top sides' all performing at best inconsistently has people excited.

I've a feeling this season could be completely mental & that I may do as much damage to my heart as I did a couple of years back.
Not a chance, as Palace showed, counter attack pressing doesn't work very well at home against teams that come to defend and hit on the break. I think we will beat all the top sides but will struggle against mid and lower table teams. 4th is still a big ask

Palace showed lack of concentration will cost us goals. And lack of creativity upfront will cost us points.
We were still creating when City had all the players back in defense. It's amazing how much more confident we looked in their final third. As long as we can concentrate and keep the quick players from making clear runs behind our defense, pressing high up will reap the rewards, especially with the weaker sides that feel uncomfortable with the short passing game.

Dortmund were not playing Bayern-class sides every week. Pressing high up is way more difficult against the better, more skillful sides.

Its got to be mentioned again just how bad the City defence was, not to take away from our wonderful performance, but their centre backs made it so easy for us. It was like watching a kid play FIFA, one of their centre backs would charge after the ball leaving a massive space for Firmino to waltz into, it was school boy stuff. We were sharp enough to take advantage, and take advantage to devastating effect, but I need to see us give that kind of attacking performance against a disciplined rigid defence before I'm confident we can do it week in week out.

I dont think thats true. The Palace game showed that if we lose concentration we'll get punished. It happened twice in that game. We had more than enough chances to win. Should have won imho.

Mind you, the ref helped them a lot. Their strategy for dealing with Lallana and Coutinho was to run up behind them and push them down to the ground. They did that time after time, with no yellow cards. The ref was relatively okay, by his standards, but it was ridiculous that we ended up with three yellow cards and they got none.

It was a great game, a lesson in how to counter attack... but he might as well rip that manual up now.

Seeing as we've played all the big teams away already, and seeing that everyone in the league will be bricking it against us from now on, I don't think there is a single game left this season where the opposition won't set up for a draw. The only time we'll be counter attacking is when we've already taken the lead. So it's gonna be interesting to see what changes he makes to the style on Thursday and Sunday.

Yep, I was raging throughout the game at some of his decisions, at the beginning of the second half everything was going City's way and we were getting nothing, the cynic in me almost thinks he was trying to keep the momentum with City for "entertainment value"

They rarely showed close-up replays of the incidents, so I couldn't tell if Lallana and co were diving, but I doubt it. They kept shoving players down and the ref just ignored it. Okay, Lucas had to be booked, but Can's booking was silly and Clyne's was questionable, too. At least three of their defenders deserved a yellow card, and, if they had been booked, the likes of Ibe and Benteke could really have exploited the vulnerability that would have followed.

That was immensely enjoyable. From a personal preference I was quite happy to see a game in which pointless possession and passing around in defence was seen as the route to victory; we had less possession and made far fewer passes than the corresponding fixture last season - which we lost 3-1 - but we totally dominated City, working feverishly hard to ensure City had no time to dwell on the ball, forcing them to cough up possession time and again. Klopp's style of football and management, indeed his whole personality, is a much better fit than Rodgers.

It was also achieved with our two best strikers still not ready to start, so Klopp employed a rather interesting 4-6-0 formation, with Firmino, Coutinho and Lallana dancing in and out of a befuddled City defence and midfield. Firmino was probably the closest we had to a striker in terms of formation, and he rewarded Klopp with his best performance as a Liverpool player. Pellegrino proved again that he is not a top quality manager, and his decision to play Toure and Fernando as a midfield two lost them the game in the first 45 minutes, as they were at times facing 5 Liverpool players in the midfield. This makes the home Palace defeat against the execrable Pardew even more galling, but if we can start playing like this at Anfield, we'll all be happy.

De Bruyne, Hart and Aguero were excellent, but they were the only players who looked the part of Champions; the rest were dreadful.

Ratings below

Mignolet (7) Much better than his poor display against Palace. Some smart saves and booming kicks were very welcome indeed. Had no chance with the fabulous Aguero goal. His distribution is still too slow and erratic, but a late charge out of is area showed good reading of the danger.

Skrtel (8) Very good indeed. Always in the right place, made several great headed clearances and scored a great goal with a shot so hard and fast Hart only started to move after it had gone past him. Extra point for that.

Lovren (7) Will have had most Liverpool fans nervous at the start, but performed well, throwing himself into challenges and clearances

Clyne (7) City always seem to play more intricate and dangerous football on the left, which kept Clyne busy, but he is a very good player and coped well.

Moreno (7) He's much better when he has to simply compete physically, with pace or power, and he had his ideal adversary in the pacy and one-dimensional Navas. far less happy when the superlative De Bruyne came near, but his attacking prowess was great to watch

Lucas (6) Had little to do, as City's midfield were pinned so far back ether was acres of space for Lucas to move into. Caught out by the pace and movement of Aguero who skinned him on the way to scoring, but he wasn't the only one. Booked, so will serve a suspension.

Can (8) What a massive improvement. A game in which his undoubted powerful presence was actually aligned to an end product. Blew City away with some wrecking ball play, and then conjures up a beautiful back heel to set up another goal.

Milner (8) A blur of industry and effort, he was a building block for the total midfield control we enjoyed and used the ball well. Captain's display, great to have him back in the side and playing like this, after a few weeks of toil and mediocrity.

Lallana (8) Another who helped orchestrate this one-sided display. Finally showed some end product and genuine quality, as opposed to slow-motion Cruyff turns and harmless tricks and flicks - here he was causing damage all over the pitch, and one dummy that wrong-footed an admittedly almost entirely hapless defence, was simply glorious. This is what we expect from Liverpool players.

Firmino (9) He is unfortunate that his price-tag and reputation perhaps had some fans expecting Suarez-type quality. I was one of many left utterly underwhelmed, but this was more like it. He doesn't have much genuine pace, and isn't exactly a deadly finisher - as evidenced by the plethora of chances he wasted - but he always wants the ball, and when he has the freedom to move around the pitch, he can do real damage with it. Caused utter mayhem and left City dazed with his movement and passing. Should have scored three.

Coutinho (9) One of those games in which his willow-the-wisp playing style is allied with the aggression and venom of a black mamba. He was unplayable at times, darting head up into City's final third time and again, City's players trying to tackle smoke. Wow.
