Not a chance, as Palace showed, counter attack pressing doesn't work very well at home against teams that come to defend and hit on the break. I think we will beat all the top sides but will struggle against mid and lower table teams. 4th is still a big ask

Yes, I'm still very upset about Palace, and that's largely because I genuinely despise Alan Pardew, but also because it does show some flaws in the team, when we can't impose our game properly.

@dreamy

Palace scored a goal from a piss poor clearance in the box and a header from a set piece a few minutes from time. I would hardly suggest that were going to struggle against teams that will counter attack off that one performance

To be fair, Zaha and Bolasie caused us all kinds of headaches, we always struggle against strong, pacey, direct players, especially on the counter attack, it's definitely a valid concern.

We were terrified by Bolasie, and having players run at us through midfield or down the flanks causes panic in the team.

All the credit for this has to go to Rodgers really, it's his team and squad that won the game..
I'm sure this was tongue in cheek, but Rodgers does deserve credit, despite his obvious short comings, he's still built a very good squad here, a squad perfect for a manager like Klopp to propel to it's full potential.

Let's not go too overboard. The squad is full of players Rodgers bought that will be sold as soon as possible, and it's still got gaping holes all over the place.

He does deserve credit for getting this summer as right as he got last summer wrong, with Clyne, Benteke, and now even Firmino looking good, and the sadly injured Ings and Gomez looking promising but everyone was very happy with this summer's activity, it was Rodgers' abject failure in conjuring anything like a good team out of them, and a flat, dead-eyed playing style that led to his inevitable and overdue demise.

And Klopp still needs to sign a midfielder, goalkeeper, CB and winger

Happy Graham reminds me a bit of Stephen Graham. Probably as Combo just before he kicks the fuck out of Milky.

But summer 14 don't look too bad now either.

Lambert's gone but...

Lallana - looks a big part of Klopp's plans. Last month Rosco was saying flog him for £6m. Who wants to sell him now?
Can - Not great by any means but worth well more than the 10m we paid for him and probs going to be around for a long time
Markovic - I reckon he'll do great in this side
Lovren - who knows? Overpaid defo but he's in the side and playing well
Origi - Looks crap but we'd still get what we paid for him
Manquillo - only a loan
Moreno - looks good.
Balotelli - OK then, awful.

In the context of the time it was terrible coz we needed to replace Suarez, but it looks very positive in retrospect

Of the 8 permanent there were 4 starters in that great win. 2 have gone for good you'd think (Lambert and Balotelli) and Markovic who I reckon could be dead good, Origi who probs won't.

Not bad at all.

No it doesn't, defensive midfield is probably the closest thing our squad has to a gaping hole (giggidy) and we still have decent options there.

I'm not saying we couldn't do with some improvements, but we need one or two players of quality, not an overhaul.

Can has had about two good games ever, Lallana has scored exactly ZERO Premiership goals and it's nearly Xmas, Balotelli is a joke, Markovic is never coming back, because he's not very good and has no spine, and Lovren has played well once, in the last game we played, which he started only because of injury.

It was, and still is, one of the worst major spending sprees in Premiership history.

It was a great game, a lesson in how to counter attack... but he might as well rip that manual up now.

Seeing as we've played all the big teams away already, and seeing that everyone in the league will be bricking it against us from now on, I don't think there is a single game left this season where the opposition won't set up for a draw. The only time we'll be counter attacking is when we've already taken the lead. So it's gonna be interesting to see what changes he makes to the style on Thursday and Sunday.
I think this is gonna echo the 13/14 season in some ways now, klopp knows we can destroy teams by counter attacking so we'll be going hell for leather for the first goal in every match, & that should open things up for us.

I can see us starting every game at 100mph now. Hope I'm right, cos I honestly think if we get an early goal we'll beat any team in this league, even more so when you consider we have sturridge back very soon.

If we get another one or two big scorelines the confidence in this side will be immense, starting games all out with that confidence will be huge.

I suspect that under Klopp we were always going to start every game going like the clappers anyway TBH. There are always going to be games where it doesn't go according to plan though, especially at home where teams will be parking double-deckers against us. The real challenge for Klopp is going to be to find tweaks for when that happens, and the challenge for the players is going to be making those work.

I reckon we have an excellent chance though, especially this season where everyone's form is at sixes and sevens anyhow.

Oh yeah, the way we've started games has been much improved, but it's been very much press at high intensity then push on. I wouldn't be surprised to see us sacrificing a little defensively to push for that early goal at a similar intensity.

To be fair, Zaha and Bolasie caused us all kinds of headaches, we always struggle against strong, pacey, direct players, especially on the counter attack, it's definitely a valid concern.

But we still had something like 22 shots vs 9 and 14-6 in corners. Yes, they caused us a lot of problems with Bolasie and Zaha but we still had more chances and on another day without individual mistakes would have won.
When we lost 1-3 in Gerrards final home game they had more chances, shots and corners.

I dont think that performance is at all an example of how we'll perform at home.
Its a valid concern though that after a long flight and away game in Europe our squad isnt up to a new game on Sunday.
That was probably down to injuries but also a lack of quality.

Assuming those figures are accurate, 10% faster is an enormous differential. If we can keep that up for the rest of the season we'll be awesome.

Any thoughts on Klopp's tendency to bring on a CB near the end of the game to sure up the midfield and close the game?
I'm liking it tbh, it's very old school and I haven't seen it for years. Against Man C that was probably the third or fourth time Klopp did it.

It was an example and poignant one too, we cant dismiss it as poor finishing or bad luck because days like that will come again and we need to be able to deal with them. We should have controlled that game and not have given Palace a chance, if we did that the one goal would have been enough, unfortunately we couldn't contain their direct style of play, and as a result they caused us problems, which eventually led to our defeat.

I like it, although it was weird seeing Kolo marauding inside their half.

I don't think Hansern's denying what you say in the first of those two posts. What he's saying, as I read his post anyway, is that that performance isn't necessarily a guide to how we'll perform in future. I would agree though that we need to be better when such games do come along.

I think one of the most impressive things is 4-1 away against the most expensive accrued club in the PL and Klopp is not totally happy and still looking for a lot of improvement. There is more to come. Studge may turn out to be a dilemma for him because for all the cutting edge he provides he's never been that great pressing high up the pitch, not that I personally think he's lazy.

It was more Klopp being a sentimental fella and giving Toure a run-out at his old club. If it really had anything to do with game management, it wouldn't have happened in the 9oth minute when we were 4-1 up and had been for 10 minutes. It was totally meaningless in terms of that game.

It obv wasn't great at all, but 4 starters out of 8 in a side that just bummed Citeh away means it's far from a write off too. You're having a go at Lallana and Can but they're getting plenty of love in the MoTM thread. Markovic is gonna be boss.

Yes, they were both excellent against City. How much love did Can get in the Palace MoTM thread? After all, that was one game too.
