Man City (H) - Post Game Thoughts

Me too. Looks to me like Can was to slow. If he'd stepped up just before Ageuro's pass Dzeko would have been offside. The other two CBs had a line he was not following.

Lovren didn't have a line, he was dawdling back into defence. You can also see that Can, Lovren AND Moreno were all playing Dzeko on-side.

Watch the GIF below (only one I can find but good enough to illustrate my point). Had Lovren tracked across as fast as Aguero then would have been no gap to pass into.

This discussion is a must-watch. Focusing mostly on City's and Pellegrini's tactical failings against our system. I thought the same thing before and during the game – I have no fear of City when we're playing well because they have no answer to our system. We can still lose to them due to bad luck or individual mistakes, but generally I have no fear when playing them. I think in the EPL only Mourinho's Chelsea play in a way that can expose our weaknesses, they know how to keep it tight in defensive midfield (a.k.a. Coutinho's and Sterling's hunting grounds) and their pace on the break and set pieces can trouble our defense.

I have to add that Rodgers' tactics and team selection has been absolutely spot on. Takes guts to drop Sturridge for one of the biggest home games of the season (yes, he played 105 minutes against Besiktas on Thursday, but Sterling played all 120 and still started ahead of him), but we needed the extra defensive work-rate that Sterling can provide. Good to see Can reinstated at RCB and Lovren at LCB – I think that's how it should be until Sakho returns (and Lovren drops to the bench).

The way they crucified Pellegerini, you would have thought they lost by 5-0. But the fact is for all the space offered to Sterling, Lallana and Coutinho, we could only win with 2 wonder strikes. You could argue that we need to be more clinical and decisive, and the front 3 were as wasteful as they were brilliant in finding that space.

Yep, I'd considered make a thread on this, but decided not to, we were great yesterday, but we really lacked cutting edge, we can't survive on wonderstrikes every week.

You're all over thinking it imo.

I said at the time (in person & on here) that I thought it was an extremely well worked goal & few teams would have managed to defend against it.

That tippy tappy shit around the box is what City are great at and there is no shame in conceding a goal like that. Good game and 3 great goals.

I'll try some "ratings" without the numbers – this was such a team effort I feel almost sorry to "grade" the players, so here are just some observations:

Mignolet – somehow less decisive than previous games, hard to say if he should have come out for Aguero's chance, but there were a couple of other incidents when he wasn't as quick off his line as we were used to seeing. Hope it's just a blip.

Can – somewhat uneven game from him, like when he played Zabaleta (I think) onside when other 2 CBs stepped up. But he is a leader and a fighter. Maybe RCB is actually his best position?

Skrtel – almost perfect

Lovren – lots of little things to nitpick, but overall not too bad. Like other players I think he benefits from more coaching time and getting used to his teammates; I like that in 2nd half he started passing directly to Coutinho whereas in the first half he was just giving the ball away.

Hendo – considering that he was playing on injections, this was a great captain's performance and I'm not too bothered about a few loose passes here and there. I think he'll probably edge Can for the captaincy next season.

Allen – what a fucking great performance! I really, really hope this means he is finally coming out of his shell; we'll be a stronger team with this kind of Joe Allen in midfield, please keep it up Joe!

Moreno – I still have some remnants of skepticism towards him, but little by little he is winning me over. Good against Besiktas, and quite decent yesterday.

Markovic – I was afraid people would be too harsh on him, but fortunately it seems most people are willing got be patient with him. He is an intelligent player who is also very physically gifted. I have no doubt he will improve And that's "dink" of a pass for Lallana was spectacular.

Coutinho – does anyone still question me comparing him with Zidane? In truth it's really hard to find a good comparison for Phil among the players of the past, but his ceiling as a player is so fucking high that you kind of have to use the best of the best as a benchmark for him or you'll be doing him a disservice. I think having gone through a crucial part of his football development in Italy, he has adopted the kind of combination of directness and tactical intelligence that's being the hallmark of great Serie A playmakers from Baggio to Kaka and the great Zidane himself. Where Spanish players pass and pass and pass, Italian playmakers always look for a through-ball to play to a striker in front of them. Italian game is a lot more "vertical." So in that sense there is actually more in common between Serie A and EPL than Spain and EPL and Coutinho's quick adaptation is a testament to that. I just love watching him play when he's on song and nothing makes me happier than seeing him score, especially score the way he did in the last 2 games. You can defend against through-balls and crosses, but you can't defend against this type of goal and that's why players who can do this often score the most crucial goals, the kind of goals that win you evenly-matched games and potentially win trophies.

Lallana – incredible piece of skill for the first offside goal, love his combination of industry, creativity and technique. If you could only add a bit of pace to Lallana, he would be a genuine European superstar. Worth 25M or not, I'm glad to have him here.

Sterling – not at his best, but still a good performance. As a fan I feel so lucky to watch players like him and Coutinho every week.

Sturridge – looked a lot sharper and hungrier than midweek, unlucky not to score. I hope he received the message that you always have to earn your place in this team.

We got behind them and made enough proper chances too though. It wasn't as if we were only shooting from distance.

One thing I noted from yesterdays game and also the midweek game is that sterling has gone massively off the boil. He seems to be holding onto it when he should pass and passing when he should keep hold of it and seems to have lost his general awareness of whats around him.

I would take him out of the game in midweek for Sturridge - we would lose a lot of our pace in attack but we would hope that Coutinho and Lallana can still create and Sturridge is rested and prepared to move in front of these 2.

That was probably the best game in a red shirt I can recall seeing from Allen or Coutinho. Ive always maintained that Allen was a good player but would never work in a midfield with Gerrard. I think we will see him come into his own next season when Rodgers restructures the midfield

Markovic - Didn't happen for him
Sterling - Disappointing
Lallana - Did ok, but a few fuck ups

Everyone else, 11 out of 10.

Lallana had some Zidanesque piece of skill himself in the second half. Were he dragged the ball backheeled with him past a player after Ming threw it to him. Excellent.

I don't know if it's the same moment you are talking about but I specifically remember in the 61st he displayed the most ridiculous piece of skill.

I can't remember who put the ball into the air but it was falling straight down to him right in the middle of the pitch. He took a second to look around him and then flicked the ball through his own legs inch perfect with a back heel and in stride spun and started up field with the ball. I had to rewind and watch in slow motion 3-4 times. Just magnificent.

It wasn't as good as Coutinho's little flick to (Moreno?) out on the wing. Ball was coming down from a height, and Coutinho, as cool as a cucumber flicked it on the volley right into Moreno's path. A move that anyone else couldv'e easily fucked up, but the confidence he showed was amazing.

Yeah but Coutinho does ridiculous shit all the time and makes it look easy so it's not as memorable.

I thought Lallana's skill for the first offside goal was absolutely sublime. Too bad it didn't count. It wouldn't look out of place on Dennis Bergkamp's career highlights reel.

That got the highest of praise from me, my first thought was "Damn, that's something Suarez would do."

We really shouldn't compare Lallana and Coutinho. They both have magical feet with the ball. We're lucky or have a really good scouting/transfer team... *coughs*

Lallana has that quick twist and turn that only works if a defender over commits to try to win the ball. If the defender stands off him he doesn't have much except to pass. He isn't that fast and is easily shrugged off the ball. Bet he isn't going to be half as effective against Burnley.
