I don't want this to turn cuntish, just wondering what peoples thoughts are on how much we "need" him these days. We've still shipped 4 goals in the last two games, despite the arguable added steel of Lucas and Allen in the middle. He's been given a similar role to Henderson and been found wanting really, though I'm not sure if that's a fair ask, after him playing a deeper role for the last few years. Or maybe the lack of versatility is an issue.

What does the future hold for our popular, if divisive Brazilian?

Back up for Gerrard, then back up for gerrards replacement. He's not good enough

He's been pretty poor since he's come back from injury, and the change of position hasn't helped. If he doesn't improve over the summer, I can see us shipping him out.

I'm a fan of Lucas but if Gerrard is playing in the 'Lucas Role' then Lucas should become a squad player. Allen and Henderson are definitely ahead of him as our runners from deep. Lucas did nothing wrong yesterday but we missed Henderson. I'd definitely keep Lucas and he will very important for us next year again.

He started out elsewhere as an attacking midfielder and he's never really convinced me that he's genuinely suited to being a defensive midfielder. He certainly still panics and tackles like an attacking midfielder. As a square peg in a round hole he's been brilliant, his attitude has been superb, but that's another matter. Also, since his last two injuries, he's looked a shadow of his old happy self and seems troubled. I wish him well but I don't see where he fits these days.

This, pretty much. As said though, with the squad game we'll need his experience next season, in Europe particularly.

I'm not convinced in him or Gerrard, in the DM role. If we could play with 1 DM and 2 CM's further forward, I'd rather see Gerrard play forward, and get a new DM in and use Lucas for cover. I dont rate Lucas, and he's not playing as well as he used to either, but he's a decent backup DM.
I think Gerrard is wasted in the position he's in, he's great at spraying hollywood balls all around the place, but I don't think he's very good at covering the defence.
I wish we had a Mascherano in that position instead of a Lucas/Gerrard.
Oh, and Lucas is fucking even more bollocks further up the pitch.
'Box to box midfielder' - ha.

I agree that Allen and Henderson are ahead of him as end-to-end midfielders, and Gerrard is ahead of him in the DM role.
I can see Rodgers looking to add at least another end-to-end midfielder and one more DM for next season.
He seem to be a positive character and a popular figure in the dressing room.
So, yes, in his current form and with others ahead of him he's a squad player for us.

We've been linked with Masher again.

Even though he's a cunt, I'd welcome him back into that DM slot. Free up Gerrard.
Think he's 29 so he's got a few years left in him. He's not going to leave Barca though, they need him and Busquets, and he's cover for the CB's.

Unless you have someone who really specialised in the role, like Mascher (who I would love to see back) it's a waste of a place having a defensive midfielder when you can have an Allen or Henderson covering the pitch doing it all. Lucas is, and always has been pretty limited.

yep. it's noticed a lot more when he can barely run either

The zip looks to be gone completely from his game yeah I know he was never the quickest but lately he just looks so fucking laboured.
Is his head gone with all these knee injuries or is he just not good enough to do a job further up the pitch?
Either way he was awful yesterday after a promising half against the hammers it's all gone to pot.
We definitely need better next season considering the group that's going to face us in Europe.

The only time Lucas has ever been half-decent was for a brief period when he'd been playing almost non-stop for about 3 years. He's absolutely horrendous as a squad player, because he seems to need so long to play himself in to any kind of form. I think Lucas's career peaked a couple of years ago, and will only decline from here.

He's just not suited to playing the role he's being asked to do.
I'd only want to see him play when Gerrard's either injured or coming off in the second half. In that respect he'll be very important for us.
But neither he nor Gerrard are capable of playing as one of the '2' in midfield. They don't have the stamina, thus work rate, to make it effective.
When Henderson's out, I'd rather have a youngster working his bollocks off playing there instead. Don't know if Texiera or Alberto have the work rate and discipline for the role. But Lucas shouldn't be the one filling in for that role.

If called upon he is more than capable of coming in and doing a good job for us. He will rotate a fair bit with Gerrard next season I'd say. We'll add another midfielder too.

Back when we were also-rans, I used to find Lucas' smile when things went wrong to be quite a disarming interlude from the inevitable pall of gloom during a match. Now it really matters, I want to smash his stupid fucking grin into his teeth.

Perhaps time to sell up and find somone younger and more dynamic.

Looks like were in the minority, the way i see it is that hes Gerrards back up and thats it, hes a more than adequate back up DM, Gerrard won't be starting every game next season so he will be needed, can't see him getting sold, its not like we are stocked with midfielders as it is and especially experienced ones.

Playing him further forward is no good but its only happened because we haven't a choice due to our thin squad, we won't see him playing there next season.

I don't think it's fair to judge him on a position that he's unsuited for, but having said that he's not a brilliant footballer by any means and we can surely do better.

Allen is twice the player, IMO.

A stupid thread deserves a stupid reply. Why is everyone looking for a scapegoat?
It's just typical, Lucas was one of the players who had a bad game so he deserves a thread.

Typical kneejerk agenda driven nonsense.
