Lucas was excellent against West brom. I don't think he was shocking this evening or anything. We were hammered in midfield in general.

One thing playing well at home to West Brom, another thing doing it away at Arsenal.

Same applies to all our players.

Lucas was often criticized for playing well against better opposition but not imposing himself against a so called lesser team. No it's the other way around it seems for some people.

He was poor enough tonight but not shocking or anything extreme like that. We were very poor in midfield as a whole.

Can we move on lads.

I described him to my brother as, "the guy who doesn't really do anything, gets hurt a lot, and always has the team playing in honor of him."

Remember when Mark used to be a quality poster who everyone respected?

Wow.

You were quick off the mark last week when he had his annual peak against the might of West Brom, trying to call people stupid. We've just seen his ability against a team of quality. Shite defensive work, poor distribution and zero control. Again.

you're quick enough to give it out and drag up peoples old posts, take it back and its "remember when they used to be a good poster". Really? That's almost as lame as Modo laying into Henderson in retaliation.

Shouldn't you be laying into Pat or Fox just to show how well respected you are?

Now now guys. Mark, tbh I was a bit surprised you took it upon yourself to single out one player but on the whole you're still a very fair and sensible poster.

That said I did single out two players myself so pot, kettle, black although the Lucas and Gerrard partnership hasn't been effective for quite some time hence I needed to vent. Ha.

Retaliation? So you're taking it personally?
Henderson was fucking shit. Running and harassing players is an admirable trait but he's not good enough to carry an attacking threat and he's not disciplined or skilled tactically to be a defensive midfielder.
Both Gerrard and Lucas are head shoulders above Henderson in their respective positions and I'd pick them over him ten times out of ten, but they both had a bad day against Arsenal.
I said long before the game even started that Henderson is more or less useless in an attacking position.
Every time we had a chance to break, he fucking killed the momentum and when he's got time and space he doesn't know what he's supposed to do with the ball.

I'm not doubting his potential but I'm looking at the present and now that Coutinho is back I really won't mind seeing him on the bench.

Henderson in the final third is like Carragher past the halfway line at the moment. That bit in the first half where he shat a shot out was woeful

Henderson did his job better than Lucas, Gerrard, Cissokho, Suarez, and Sturridge

He's not good at tackling, but he's more than adequate at winning the ball, a distinction that needs to be made. At worst he's an average attacker, probably a bit better than that. These days, he contributes more to the attack than Gerrard does.

Singling him out is ridiculous

It was embarrassing. Not only the shot but the moments before.
The Arsenal defence almost invited him to go on goal. They opened up a clear path to goal but did the so called "runner" run?
No, he waits, then hesitates, then slowly almost jogs into that space as if he's thinking "someone please come and take the ball off me".

I'm not A Lucas fan and never have been but he was superb last week.

This week you could have Souness in his prime play with any of the other 2/3 in our midfield and still look shite.

Bottom line our midfield as a unit got ripped to shreds by a vastly superior set of players.

It's not we shouldn't have suspected Arseals midfield is unreal .

Only for the heroics of the back 3 it could have been 3/4

That is irrelevant. Fact is we missed 4 very good chances. How can you disagree with that when it's fact.
I'm not disagreeing with at all, you said we could have won. I disagree and if you want to mention missed changes Arsenal had better changes that they missed goals aside

Again whether Arsenal had chances is irrelevant ! Don't bother, obviously you just don't get it. It's impossible to disagree with a fact which is what you are doing.

I think a little perspective is missing from the thread.

We got beat against the team top of the league in a game we arguably had the best chances in and in which we had a perfectly good goal disallowed.

I think we are quite far from shit and that includes Gerrard and Lucas. Gerrard looked very tired and lacking spark to me, Hendo for all his running lacks awareness and anticipation and Lucas hasn't really played consistently well for a pretty long time. The balance in the team isn't quite right but we are not utterly woeful by any stretch of the imagination. Rodgers saw that we needed to brighten up midfield over summer to be fair to him, sadly we didn't do the necessary business.

Overall our start to the season has been pretty good, I like Sakho a lot, Mignolet although rough round the edges is a very good stopper and we seem determined enough to give the whole thing a go which is nice to see...

That said, I thought the whole midfield was pretty m'eh yesterday, but we allowed Arsenal to get their tails up away from home and that's a bad trip for 99% of the teams in the world....even then second half we could easily have scored on a number of occasions and changed things around.... yeah...a bad result but not the worst day at the office i've ever seen.

I thought Wenger sussed our formation nicely and dare I say it we needed Enrique and Johnson in there, credit to Rodgers for switching it mind you even it was ultimately to no avail. Their were also 2 occasions in that game where a player was professionally fouled on the break and needlessly play was called back, one of which cost us a goal.... that ref needs to check out the rules again...

That was our first away defeat for a good long while ( what was the last one??) and it came during a performance where none of our players was really at it. We had little flashes of nerves at times. For all that I could see us getting back into it for most of the game and we can definitely beat them on a good day up in front of some real fans....

Dissapointment wont help them at all....Take it on the chin, and make sure we play out of our skins next week.... its the only game 10 and its the way you need to think...

Arguing about who's better between Lucas and Henderson is like arguing about the which is the tallest dwarf

And unfair on both, we were not battered yesterday in any way. Yes the result is all that counts but...

The midfield was not helped by the lack of threat on the flanks and Sturridge and Suarez were not at it at all first half.

I don't give a shit how wank we think Henderson and Lucas are, they are what we have and will only benefit from our support... its a no brainer... I think both of them can do a job, however unspectacular.

Coutinho coming back in and how he hits his stride will be key for us, there is so much to like about SAS on form that it is scary to think what they could do with a good schemer playing in behind them....something we haven't really seen much of yet so far this season. If we can get Johnson and Enrique back into the side and on form we should be a sight to behold, going forward at least!!

Arsenal played a little bit better than we did.... I'm hoping we can batter the cunts back at our place...

Yes good DMs do better in the later scenario. It's quite telling that it's the opposite with Lucas. He does very limited things and plays within his limitations.... But it's no where near what we need, especially when we need to carry Gerrard a bit in games.

Now now guys. Mark, tbh I was a bit surprised you took it upon yourself to single out one player but on the whole you're still a very fair and sensible poster.

Johnson was out.

Glen, that is. If it was Oncy's we would have won.

No, he waits, then hesitates, then slowly almost jogs into that space as if he's thinking "someone please come and take the ball off me".

It was so embarrassing that, he'd done exactly the same thing last season and scored. If you even watch the clip again, he got clipped before the shot, so I think he could be forgiven for lacking the power to execute the finish. And this "embarrassing" moment is a damn sight more than Lucas has mustered over the last couple of years. I know technically it was a bit haphazard, while Lucas is Brazilian so he has already earned his nuts on that note, but that's a pretty shoddy criticism. He didn't have the greatest of games but he was by no means one of the worst players out there yesterday, he's just an easy target for you for obvious reasons.

And yes, I'm going to take it personally when you suggest that I've championed Henderson as much as you and Ryan have defended Lucas, that's simply rubbish. I've always said he's worked hard and done ok for himself, I've also maintained that while he's good enough for the squad, we probably need better in the long run. Henderson had a difficult first season and IMO redeemed himself last year with some good performances and a few important goals. Lucas has been putting in mediocre performances regularly now for over 5yrs, it's hardly a knee-jerk response. Occasionally he has a very good game, there's just no in between though. So if Ryan is going to call us all cunts or whatever because he has a good game against West Brom, at home, then his supporters can take it on the chin when he puts in a laughable display like that one yesterday, because it's symptomatic of his career with us. Not good enough.
