Quick google search found this 'The Reds boss is delighted to finally be working with the highly-rated Leiva, who this week joined up with the squad for the first time following his summer move from Gremio.

A combative box-to-box style midfielder, Leiva's signature was coveted by a host of top clubs and Benitez is backing him him to play a starring role in Liverpool's future.'

So basically, you made the "goalscoring Gerrard" bit up then?

You're just being pedantic.

"Goalscoring Gerrard" is not a quote. It just means he was seen as a combative box-to-box central midfielder (like Gerrard) with a propensity to score some goals.

Not at all. Like I said I watcheda docu that was talking about him and his possible move to Liverpool.
Why would I make that up?

I dunno, you made up a lie that time you'd said you'd watched the match when you hadn't.

But anyway, it's an unfair thing to label him with if no one was expecting him to be a "goalscoring Gerrard" or something of that ilk.

He's a defensive midfielder, and a good one at that.

With the huge fuss made of Man Yoo’s signings of prodigies Nani and Anderson, it’s been easy to overlook the fact that Liverpool recently signed the Brazilian league’s player of the year (he was the youngest ever player to win it), Lucas, a 20-year-old box-to-box midfielder who scores plenty of goals and has been compared to Steven Gerrard. Lucas is not as flashy as compatriot Anderson but I think he’s better suited to the Premiership. Can’t see him breaking in to the Liverpool first team for a while though.
Again this isn't the the video I watch but I destinctly remember before he signed someoen sending me a link to a doco on him where it likened him to Gerrard.

He said himself he had no choice but to convert to a DM

He's a very limited player who doesn't offer much to the team. Gives away stupid freekicks and plods around the pitch offering very little. How we haven't bought a replacement by now i don't know.

Not the last to do that either. Didi Hamann did the same thing.

True but Hamann was much better in both positions and scored goals in both.

It's a shame as I'd liked to have seen him given a run in his preferred role and seen if he could have cut it.

When he was first linked and then bought, I watched a docu on him where it showed him scoring some great goals and he was described as a box to box dynamic midfielder. At the time I was very excited about him coming. Needless to say he's disappointed that front.

I'll see if I can find the video. It was ages ago now.

True.... just goes to show how porous the defences are in Brazil.

The thing is, Lucas scored 4 goals in two years for Gremio, so anyone describing him as a "goal-scoring midfielder" was either woefully misinformed, or just making it up. I think Tim Vickery proved a few things with his comments about Lucas:

1) If you sound like you know what you're talking about, lots of people will believe you.
2) If you don't know what you're talking about, it's usually best to say nothing at all.
3) The essential job requirements for being BBC's South American football correspondent are: being in South America. Watching football is "desirable", but by no means essential.

I think he was considered quite credible before the whole Lucas affair, but I for one can't take anything he says seriously now. Although his success has prompted me to apply for the position of BBC's Southeast Asian football correspondent. I just need to get some money together for the flight...

Didi had a bad injury and smoked 40 a day so sitting back as DM seemed the best idea.

It just goes to show what attributes you need to be a DM.

Tim Vickery is a bit repetitive but he knows more than most about South American football. We've all gotten things wrong on here (as the thread the other day showed) and journalists do too. They're not infallible.

As for Lucas, he's become one of those players I want to see the back of just so that I don't have to endure any more of the Lucas debate. It's been running for like six years now and it's beyond dull. Let's get in another player who will at least allow us to start that process from the beginning.

Yep, pretty much. I've said more than enough about Lucas over the years.

Now just go already.

There's wrong and there's WRONG!, though, isn't there? That's a difficult one to recover from.

I agree the Lucas debate is old, but that's because he was shit for two years, then actually quite decent, and now he's shit again. If he hadn't had a decent season in the middle then he wouldn't have got people's hopes up.

But some of us never saw this so called improvement, what we saw was 2 decent matches (against Chelsea and City) ergo we don't understand why there's a debate at all..............he's not good enough, never has been and never will be.

Lucas is a great player for a mid table team. He shouldn't be in our starting XI. We must improve our midfield and strengthen.

Our whole midfield is poor apart from gerrard IMO. If we had good offers i'd sell hendo and allen in a heartbeat. Both are just very average

I remember spaffing in my undercrackers when I first saw that youtube clip.

I reckon they did face-off with him and some cunt who ended up at Barca after we bought him.

He even celebrates quicker on that clip than he can run now.

I honestly doubt a world class full back would have got is into CL places. A world class Lucas replacement would.
