tbf to neil, dobbin's excellent late cameo on sunday proved conclusively his assertion that we need mandy carroll for away games. it's obv irrelevant that we were 2-1 up at the time: a close analysis of the stats reveals that we conceded fewer goals with him in the side.
The idea of carroll at away games is a sound one. he is big and strong and should hold up the ball, win the ball high up the pitch so the likes of suarez capitalises on the second ball. That was my thinking the reality hasn't worked out. In thoery Torres should be banging in the goals but it hasn't worked out like that. I won't apologise for that because I still think that is a sound tactic but the person who implements it may not be Carroll.
fair enough matey, but maybe you should look at it and realise all this chalkboard stuff's a bit tiresome unless you're a genuine expert, which you obviously aren't, much like much the rest of us. and then you wouldn't expose yourself to this kind of ridicule, get offended, flounce off, and have to hide for a few weeks while your embarrassment subsides.
Says one of the most embarassingly myopic posters on the site - get off the soapbox lad, at least Neil encourages debate.
fuck off please you pointless thicko.

Does he really? I think he stifles debate because he contradicts himself. Then people spend ages telling him he's contradicting himself while he denies it. Its a form of debate, I'll grant you but its not all that satisfying if I'm honest.

forget it mate. grjt seems to have some kind of jealous agenda against me and pops up from time to time to try to relieve himself, furiously and inefficaciously.

okay:

point 1:
I want more through the middle of the park.
I don't expect many goals or assists from the holding midfielder.
does the above contridict each other?

keane
viera
alonso
how many goals and assists did those guys accumulate a season?

point 2:
the defense was dragged into the argument, I more than recognise that lucas is part of the defensive diamond and thus takes credit with how mean we are in defense, my basic point is maybe we should gamble that defensive solidity will remain intact despite removing an out and out holding midfielder and replacing him with someone who can offer a competent shield but also give more going forwards by virtue of making more through balls and making better runs to support the strikers.

I'm talking purely home games, games where we have to more often than not break down the door of stubborn defences, games where the opposition readily conceed possession and sit back inviting us on to them, games which are more about unlocking defences rather that keeping the other team out.
I absolutely feel lucas is needed in away games.
you claim I'm contridicting myself but I'm sorry I just don't see it.

I could take this stand point;
concentrate on the attackers, they are the ones fucking up

or this one;
concentrate on the defense, we've taken the lead a few times but have not managed to keep a clean sheet to claim all 3 points.

my standpoint is making the 4 across the middle as competent going forwards as they are sheilding the defense. it's only an opinion and an opinion I have argued, I don't expect to change anyones mind I'm just putting my ideas out there with the idea of having a reasoned debate.

Poor The Peter! He gets put back in his box for posting tripe aeons ago, and cant let it go; how dull.

Back on topic:

Lucas will always be the subject of intense debate - many find it hard to forget his initial displays, which were woeful, but I cant help but think its the Alonso factor that has weighed on him most heavily (with Xabi leaving and him being pushed forward to fill in) - in actual fact he does far better in direct comparisons with Mascher.

oncy I have no idea why you are carrying on like this, my point isn't a complicated one.
I expect more through the middle from our holding midfielder at home and if lucas isn't capable of providing that then give the job to someone else who can.

you can carry on if you wish making out I want more than is resonable to expect but I disagree I think we can have 4 players across the midfield who are capable of giving something to the team in an attacking sense (whilst maining our shape and solidity).

your point that lucas is 'doing his job' and our expensive jan/summer signings aren't doing their job is a valid point but we have what we have and we have to get on with it. so do we continue to moan about our attackers or at least attempt to find solutions (that don't involve bidding our time till jan and making more purchases).

so you carry on, 'oh, arguing with neil is such a laugh'
Im 'carrying on' Neil simply because we arent in the same room so I am UNable to bury a 12oz ballpein hammer into your fucking cranium.

The only defensive midfielder in recent memory who scored a fair share of goals and contributed with assists was Hamann. But he was one of a kind also he was more of a CM like Xabster.

Didi didn't score a fair share of goals. He scored 8 goals in 191 league games. His last 2 seasons he didn't score a single goal in the league. Prolific he wasnae.

When he did score, they tended to be screamers which obviously stick in the memory. I remember checking the stats a couple of years ago and being surprised at his modest return.
