Why?

Chelsea's midfield is almost as pedestrian as ours. Chelsea two years ago were a different beast. Now i doubt any team out there is scared of their midfield. They need a surgery as much as we do. The problem for them is that they are unable to release some of the players who are on a massive wage...a problem City will run into eventually and on a bigger scale. Throwing money at it is not the way to build a sustained challenge. Unless they are able to sustain the money throwing as well.....which let's face it, no club can.

I'd go by how he fairs against Citi.

I never said lucas was as good defensively than mash, I said he is the best holding midfielder we have.

if you attack more you are going to leave spaces that is the nature of the beast, no guts no glory. how many times have we drawn this season? 4? you could argue had we gambled more and lost two games and other the other two and we would have been better off (or we could have lost all four :laugh: )

.... but neil, we've paid a combined fee of over 100m for the supposed attacking members of the squad... Why should a 6m midfielder who does his job more than admirably be required to go gung ho too?

Carroll, suarez, henderson, downing, johnson, kuyt, adam, johnson, bellamy, maxi, spearing.....are all more than capable. Combine any 5 of them for the attack and we SHOULD be scoring more. Why risk our defensive stability when the form of others is whats costing us?

your point that lucas is 'doing his job' and our expensive jan/summer signings aren't doing their job is a valid point but we have what we have and we have to get on with it. so do we continue to moan about our attackers or at least attempt to find solutions (that don't involve bidding our time till jan and making more purchases).

The idea of carroll at away games is a sound one. he is big and strong and should hold up the ball, win the ball high up the pitch so the likes of suarez capitalises on the second ball. That was my thinking the reality hasn't worked out. In thoery Torres should be banging in the goals but it hasn't worked out like that. I won't apologise for that because I still think that is a sound tactic but the person who implements it may not be Carroll.
