Had possibly his career breakthrough performance last night against PSV. Slot was effusive in his praise and said he definitely won’t be loaned out.

Somewhat surprisingly, out of our crop of midfield talents including Bajcetic and Morton it is the less-heralded McConnell who seems to have the brightest future at the club.

Yeah but it find it strange its taken Slot until now to realize this. I mean he always stands out from the rest.

If Slot didn't know how good he was he wouldn't have started him in midfield ahead of Morton, Nallo, Nyoni or Bacjectic.

I mentioned in another thread that this is often the case, it’s usually not the best player in the year group that makes it - quite often it’s luck and taking an opportunity when it arrives.

I like McConnell - every time I’ve seen him play he’s looked good.

Of course, him coming through will send the usual suspecting off on a frothing rage that we’re using him instead of signing someone.

Well Nyoni is 17 yo and Nallo a CB. Bacjectic on loan (and I still think he'll be the best) but I was surprised to see him in ahead of Morton who's already proven himself.

I'm guessing J-Mac is more of a destroyer than Morton and Slot was looking for that aggression, though his passing was progressive too.

I think he can do more than that. Slot is clearly a big fan; also mentioned how competitive he is and how “big of an impact” he has in training.

Tbh, after seeing him last year with Klopp, I was surprised he wasn't seeing more 'late game cameos.' He's clearly good enough to contribute.

I’d be all for giving him 10 or 20 minutes when the game is won but is it realistic he makes a 9 man bench when everyone is fit?

1. Kelleher
2. Bradley
3. Gomez
4.Tsimikas
5. Endo
6. Jones
7. Nunez
8. Jota/Chiesa
9. Elliott

Slot recalled Bacj, took a look at James McConnell, then sent sulky Stef to Las Palmas. (which I assume is a pirate island in the Atlantic)

I get that Nallo is a CB, but Slot squeezed Robbo in the line up as a CB. He clearly thought first about which kid deserves a chance, rather than their position.

So adding in Quansah and Elliott there's clearly not place for Morton, J-Mac or Badger. Summer is going to be interesting in clearing the decks for new blood.

Or that a 17 year old wasn't the right choice to start?

Things I like about him:
1. A couple of turns in those vids that the great Ryan Gravenberch would be proud of
2. Not shy of using his other foot
3. Looks good under pressure - not as press-resistant as Gravy, but not too shabby
I think that's what will have impressed Slot. It was a weakened line-up the other night and the team was always going to come under pressure. The boy showed he can deal with that. Hope he'll get more chances to play in the second half of the season.
